idea
I am flying from Houston to Orlando in mid May. Does anyone know which airlines allow my joey to be pouched on me for the flight? Do I need to cage her instead? Will she have to travel as cargo? Will the flight bother her or be unhealthy for her?
Thanks,
Jan

i have flown three times over the past year on delta with my gliders in cabin...they do require a special kennel that i had to buy for in cabin flights but other than that i have had no problems flying with them...the fee was 75 so not too bad...there is the off chance though that they may not allow you to fly with them in cabin...delta has a no sugar glider policy but all three times i have flown i went ahead of time and talked with an attendant and explained the situation and i have been fortunate enough not to have had any problems thus far...i go to college in NY but live in TX and the flying in cabin has not bothered my little ones at all

in the event that they don't allow you to fly them in cabin, they do check animals as baggage for a fee of 200... although i have never had to do it this way and so am not sure how safe this method is

Thank youthe so much for the reply. Is the travel cage only avail through the airlines or is it a regular travel cage? What did you tell them to convince them not to check them as baggage?

I am originally from NY...where do you go to school?

I also believe that frontier airlines is allowing sugar gliders. Maybe someone will come along that can find the post.

sorry for taking so long to get back to you...finals week is coming up and its been kinda hectic...when i flew with them the first time i just went in and asked white type of carrier i needed and theres was really no problem...the second and third time i had to lie a bit and tell them that they are basically like gerbils in order for them to let me take them on...its a good idea to have someone on standby just in case though...but they do let you check them as cargo as well...which is my back up plan for when i fly home in a couple of weeks...i can get back to you about the specific carrier they told me to get, its in storage right now though and i cant remember the name of it...
oh and i didnt need a certificate the times i flew
hope this help[s

I used to carry mine right in my bra, but it seems that the rules have changed, and if the airline does not allow this the risk is just too great to losing your baby. If you cannot carry her on board with you, you can have her checked with the baggage for a fee, around 100/200 bucks. My breeder sends her gliders all over the country on planes with the baggage. Just get a carrier, and SUSPEND the pouch in the carrier, DO NOT lay the pouch on the ground as the glider will be josled around too much. If you are worried that this will be too stressful for your baby, you may find a friend/relative to take care of her?

I honestly hope (and pray) Jan that you try flying the right way with your baby. Find an airline that will allow them to be carry on (which I have heard is difficult to find). And if they have to be checked in as luggage, please do as the airline says. There are proper ways to ship gliders and I hope that someone that has more knowledge in this area comes along to help answer that one for you. Just a word of caution for all of you out there that lie, or sneak gliders on planes when they arent allowed. If you do get caught? There is the likelihood that your "precious' pet will be confiscated and NOT returned. I personally would not want to risk loosing and possibly being the reason that my glider gets euthenized. Just because I didnt want to do things according to the airlines rules. And alot of airlines dont allow gliders as emotional pets anymore. So Please check every possible regulation that the airline has about gliders. Could save you ALOT of pain and suffering in the end.

i didnt lie about the gliders i told them exactly what they were..i just said they were like gerbils..im sure if it was that big of a deal the airline wouldnt have let me flown with them before...ive never sneaked on any glider and have always paid the fee and gotten the speacial tags at the front desk...its a little rude if you are inferring that i lied to these people..i was just trying to share my experince with flying with them...and a couple of times the airline people needed a little prodding i dont think there is anything wrong with that

also the fee for checking them as baggage is 200 on delta i havnt come across an airline that does it for less i think continental might do it for 175 but i usually fly delta

I am still investigating how to fly my glider with me in the cabin. I called Delta today to inquire why gliders were on the no list, but ferrets, gerbils etc. were. The agent had me hold while she checked. By the way, the no list also included rats and spiders etc.

When the agent returned she said that, "No cold blooded animals like bats (or she might have said rats - could not understand her accent)were allowed and that gliders were like BATS/RATS. I explained the difference and asked with whom I needed to speak in order to educate them so they would change the rules. She provided the snail mail address and fax number to me.

Anyone think it would help if we all wrote in? Anyone willing?

I am going to post this as a new topic as well in order to have more readers see it.

im definately willing...the only reason i can see as to why they arnt allowed on the list is because when you go through security you have to actually physically take them out of the carrier and hold them in your hands while you walk through the metal detector..they wont let you hold them in a pouch or anything, because they have to check the carrier, the pouch everything, and they are probably afraid of the fact that if these guys get scared they can be hard to control and contain and can end up running amuck...i was lucky the first time i went through because the guy running security actually had sugar gliders and understood my concern of restrainging them in order to walk through.. he let me walk through holding them in their pouch and then carefully inspected the pouch on the other side..but another time my boy almost got away cuz he got so scared and i ended up having to be escorted to a private room where they could be "contained", in their words, so that they could check the pet carrier, pouch ,etc.

i always have wondered if the air port would even know if you had a glider in your shirt or something and just walked on. like i know skid would be quiet the whole time, not that i'm plannin on flyin with her or anything. but how would they know, unless you get stuck with one of those random searches lol. that would really suck!

Ummm... Rats and Bats are not cold blooded.

Snakes and alligators are cold blooded.

Darn, guess I can't fly with my pocket pet alligator.

And if they made noise, it would be difficult to convince the authorities it was your cell phone or heart monitor. If you get caught, what then? This is why I am TRYING to do it the right way, but so far to no avail. I MUST purchase my ticket within the next couple of tickets.

If she can not go, she shall not see me for 2 weeks and would not have any tent time.

Yes, the stupidity of her reason was unbelievable...I know they are not cold blooded...geesh, makes me wonder if the people who created the rules know ANYTHING about animals.

I commented on your other post about this. I would love to help you. I know years ago I use to take Suggie on the plane with me when I flew. Of course this was before 911 and they never asked to check my little pouch.

Obviously they have no idea what a sugar glider is, maybe we all could help educate them. If gerbils and hampster, ferrets are allowed, Sugar Gliders should also be allowed.

I was actually looking at the prices of flights last night to SGGA. I was looking at the rules as far as traveling with animals in the cabin on Delta. Frontier when I put the dates for SGGA couldn't get any flights to come up. Supposely Frontier is allowing Sugar Gliders on board the plane.

Let's see what we could do. It would be so nice to be able to travel with our babies, and not have to leave them behind.

We have a member on here, Alice33, who has spent 100's of hours fighting the airlines about this. She is a retired lawyer, and she had made no headway.

You might want to contact her for the information she has received but I can give you the short/bottom line. It is a losing battle. You are going to get a different story dependent on who you talk to, but gliders where once we could take them in the cabin like cats and dogs in approved carry ons, we no longer can. They have been added to the list of non-approved animals. At one time, gliders were not even mentioned, but now they are on the list specifically ... sugar gliders.

At one time, with the proper documentation, you could take them as emotional support animals, but even that, I believe has come under great scrutiny.

Frontier does allow gliders in the cabin, and some airlines will tell you yes, only to change that once you actually get to the airport.

We have been through the writing to the airlines with Alice to no avail. In fact, I'm afraid we did more harm that good but who knows what would happen if you happened to get a different person in management. You wouldn't be any worse off that you are right now.

Just wanted everyone to be aware that Alice has gone every route possible because she travels so much, and she never had a problem flying with her "girls". There are many airports around the country that had Glider 101 classes held by Alice and her girls wink

Whatever you decide to do, please remember above all, be respectful and don't go in with an attitude. If you do, they will not even listen to your request.

Is that Alice that lives in the Florida? I would love to try to change this ruling. Maybe I could talk to her and continue on the quest.

Actually, that same Delta agent suggested I try getting her on board as an Emotional Support Animal. Great, so I just need to be declared "troubled"! Actually, I was considering this as an option - I am truly claustrophobic and have to calm myself down and think of other things while waiting for the plane to take off. Maybe it's legit enough!
