I have had my Ionic Breeze for about 3 years now, and I know that I have read that some here use them in there room with their gliders to keep it smelling fresh.

Just now, I was doing my regular house cleaning and noticed a smell. At first I thought it smelled like new plastic, but when searching for the source I came to my ionic breeze.

A very small amount of smoke was coming out of it!

Thank God I was home! I leave that thing on constantly and just happen to be home for summer vacation (I am a teacher).

It is now unplugged and cooling off. Shortly it will be thrown away and NOT replaced. That was too close of a call for me. I can't imagine what might have happened if I was not home.

I just wanted to share as a warning to others. Do NOT leave that thing on when you are not home, please!

What happened? What was burning? My hubby has wanted one for years but they are just too expensive, I know when the money gets better though he's definately going to want one - can you specify what happened? Was is an actual Ionic Breeze or a "generic"? Oh no! I'm glad you were there to catch it!

I have an Ionic Breeze too, but don't use it anymore. I didn't have any bad experience like that. I just didn't feel like it did anything. I'm don't have a very sensitive nose, but I work with some people who definitely do and they didn't really think it helped much either. Lou, who works in my office and suffers from allergies didn't notice any improvement with it. I kept it at the office most of the time, but I took it home a few times too, and my hubby wasn't impressed either.

The only time I noticed anything was when I would come into the office and smell ozone because somebody had turned it all the way up, hoping to get more of an effect. I thought the lights on my salt water fish tank had shorted out when I smelled that!

Monster, I would say tell your hubby to save his money. Mine is definitely an Ionic Breeze. I had a friend who worked for Ecoquest, and I got it from her. I really wanted to be able to say it was great and everyone should buy one from her, but it just wasn't.

I have no idea what happened. I had cleaned it the day before, but it had been working fine.

It was definitely one of those electrical smells coming from it but it really freaked me out.

It was a genuine Ionic Breeze from Sharper Image.

BTW, I do have to agree with Peeper Keeper, I expected better results from the darn thing than I got. Once in a while, when you walk into the room, you get a whiff of fresh air, but that's about it. The biggest advantage I can see from it is the gunk on it when you clean it....its really not worth the money.

Also, the bathroom unit that you get "free" never worked for me.

After this experience, I will never get anyting like this again, its just not worth the risk.

Okay, I may be confused. The Sharper Image product is different from the one I had, but I think same principle: ionize the air and the "junk" will precipitate out, and combine it with Ozonation to "sterilize" the air.

Yup, just Googled it and mine was a "Living Air" purifier. But of course the Ecoquest people say theirs is better than Ionic Breeze. I just don't think either of those things do anything.

Seems like I remember reading something about them … something else BAD… but I don’t remember if it was just that they didn’t work or something else…
Guess that was no much help…

I think you are referring to the fact that they produce ozone, Xglider.

while ozone is good in the stratosphere (ozone layer) it is a respiratory irritant on the surface... it's actually a pollutant down here, and that's why I would never get one...

My dad is a respiratory therapist (and has been for over 30 years), so I asked him about this, because naturally I was concerned about my animals' well-being as well as my own. He said that he has heard that a lot and the actual amount of ozone that it creates is negligible and won't cause any harm. Now, this is for humans, as for animals as small as a glider, I would think that it possibly could have some side effects, but I'm no expert.

Also, my grandma (whom has lung disease from smoking two packs a day for X amount of years) has an Ionic Breeze both at home and at the ranch house. She swears by it. Then again, it could very well be psychosomatic.

I don't know- the only ozone producing machines I've been around are the commercial ones they used after the fire- it did make my craft supplies salvageable since they were sealed from smoke and soot by being in the opposite end of the house but had smell just because the entire house smelled! on the other hand I found it very difficult to breath in the house while it was running (we were warned not to stay in the house with it going, but you had to turn it on and go lock up and when we came in even after we turned it off for awhile I had issues)

So that has made me feel they are not something I want in my house no matter what good they do.. I'd rather just clean more often!

We had one break as well. It was shooting electricity into the plastic top, which didnt do much but make it smell like burnt plastic. Mine had a garantee, i sent it in, they sent me a new one. No problems with my new one. Mine was making a noise when it started this, it sounded like a crackling noise. Kinda neat to watch... lol... Looked like little lightning bolts shooting into the plastic... he he he...

I will say something good for it. I used to get colds ALL the time. There was hardly a week i wasnt sick. (knock on wood) In the year i have had mine, I have only gotten a cold when the first one broke and i didnt have one running. I only have it going in the living room, but i have to say it HAS to be that machine. I have an extremely low white blood cell count and just pick up EVERYTHING. I spend a lot of time at home, rarely get to go anywhere... Most colds are caused by your own home.

Now, do i notice a "fresh" smell? No. I do keep mine on high ALL THE TIME. But i do know, working with a lot of fleece in the living room creates a HUGE amount of dust from the fibers flying off. And I have to clean my machine out at least once a week, if not ever 4 days or so. So it deffinately does its job here. If nothing else, it keeps the dust down.

(I got mine on ebay for half price from Sharper Image...)

Hmmm...

Well, see, the thing is, the way those ionic breeze machines work is they emit a steady stream of ions/free radicals/ozone (O3-) (or what have you, and variable concentrations there of) which are negatively charged and are unstable molecules which stablize themselves by ioncally binding to air particles including those that cause odours. The binding causes these air particles to fall to the floor where they sit until you do your routine vaccuming or sweeping.

I find the problem with the ionc breezers are 1) as a vocalist I'm usually very aware as to the condition of my throat and voice and I have found that when I spend an extended period of time in a room where an air purifier has been running, it really dries out my lungs and throat, and 2) just the thought of having to inhale all those airborn ions or free radicals (which by the way have been known to cause cancer) or even the ionically bonded odour particles supercedes the need for fresh smelling air to me, especially when there are several other efficient alternatives to odour elimination.

Someone mentioned that "plastic" smell, and that is from the ions/free radicals/ozone emmitted by the machine. My mom used to sell the machines, but I have always forbade her to use them around my animals.

Well, this is so interesting! I had never heard the down side of these things before.

Just the threat of what may have happened had I not been there alone is what scares me. The plastic smell came with the smoke, I think it might have been more electrical than plastic. Although after having it on the balcony all night waiting for my bf to throw it out, it still had that smell when he finally did take it to the trash (you know how men don't always do things immediately when we ask). <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

I just wanted to put the word out that these things may have a more immediate threat....that is I am afraid had I not been home, there may have been a fire.

What scares me most about that, other than losing possessions, is that my suggies are home alone while I am at work!

If you had gotten water in it then the this could have caused a short.

You need to emphisis the fact that these are unstable particles and disipate very quickly in the air. These must have been tested on animals including mice or rats prior to the allowed use.

I own an ionic breese and have owned on for about two years. I have it on the highest setting constantly. I notice a big difference. The unit is in my glider room 10'x 8' x 8'. I have never had any respiratory, or cancer problems with my gliders. The ionic breeze works for me and I seen no need not to get one. If you have a broken ionic breeze then you should return it, especially if it is a fire hazzard.

The noise you will hear emitted by the ionic breeze is telling you it needs to be cleaned. If you do not clean it you could cause a malfunction.

You can get ionic breezes for about $150 on ebay.

Well, see that's what I was saying, Ushuaia, when the free radicals bind with the odour particles they create new heavier molecules that slowly fall to the floor, but you can still breathe those molecules in. Also, they sit as a thin film of dust on the floor and can float into the air when disturbed (i.e. running by, pets playing, etc). I'm sure it doesn't bother everyone and all animals (because many here have found success with the air purifiers) but I suppose it's a matter of sensitivity. I have heard several folks voicing similar experiences with their air purifiers.
