The finch cage is a 18"x18"x3' cage that is commonly found in pet shops and frequently used by sugar glider owners. A large and growing problem with this cage is the fact that the fall through grate at the bottom of the cage does little to keep gliders out and has been shown to be a danger to joeys that can get caught under them. After losing a joey this way I made a single modification and solved this problem. I will give a detailed outline of how to make these modifications yourself.

Materials Needed:

2'x 2'piece of 1/2" x 1/2" vynil coated wire mesh
Wire cutters
Clear White Paper Towels
Corn Cob Bedding

Step 1:

Cut the 2'x 2'piece of 1/2" x 1/2" vynil coated wire mesh into 17 1/2" x 17 1/2" or 35 squares x 35 squares. Make sure to cut against the wire at a 45 degree angle to ensure smooth edges. Do not cut the welds.

Step 2:

Fill the tray 3/4 to the top with corn cob bedding

Step 3:

Place the paper towels at opposing corners covering the lip just above the tray.

Step 4:

Place the 17 1/2" x 17 1/2" piece of 1/2" x 1/2" vynil coated wire mesh over the second lip above the tray.

Step 5:

Place the cage on top of the fall through mesh and lock into place.

You will find that the white paper towels make it easy to observe the amount, consistency, and color of the feces. The towels can also be changed daily which will keep the litter fresher longer.

I have posted pictures of the various steps, except for cutting the wire mesh, in the next few posts.

While that sounds like good modifications, I would suggest not using corn cob bedding. It can carry the spores that causes Aflatoxin poisoning and not something I would risk with any of my animals (gliders or birds).

I have used corn cob bedding for 2 years now and have not had any problems with aflo toxins. You can use other types of bedding but corn cob does not catch the papwer towels like the other beddings do. I have done my research on aflo toxins and I still use corn cob bedding because I think the risk is minnimal at best. I do not want this to turn into a discussion on aflo toxins. I will add the pictures later.
