I know this is a serious issue and it is not good to feed your gliders crickets because of the Aflatoxins <--not sure if that is spelled right. I can't seem to find the thread that goes into detail about this issue specifically so would someone please kindly help me out and explain.

1. What is the definition of Aflatoxin?

2. What are the ill efercts?

3. Are the ill effects immediate or slow affecting?

4. How does it tie into Crickets?

5. Why is it so bed to feed the crickets to gliders?

I think that's all the questions I have. thanks for the help in advance!!

Go to her website suggieshop.com

There is a video with her explaining what aflatoxins are and how it affected her suggies. It's heartbreaking but very imformative.

That's fine but i'm also looking for a written striaght forward explanation so I can copy and paste to pass it on to a friend in an email so she understands why not to feed her gliders crickets. I'm not good at trying to remember everything by listening to a video and tryong to explain everything I have heard especially when it might make me cry.

1. Aflatoxin is a different name for mold or fungus.

2. If a human were to ingest molds/fungus, they would probably make you sick for a while but if a glider were to ingest it, it would more than likely lead to the shut down of their whole body. Molds are poison = death. It only takes 1 nut or 1 cricket with aflatoxins to kill them.

3. From my understanding, the affects start taking place within a couple hours to days but I'm not 100% sure on that.

4. Crickets are generally raised on a corn meal bedding which means they're eating the corn and playing in the corn. Corn molds easily which is why corn cob bedding isn't reccommended for ANY animal that can eat it. With crickets, the aflatoxins sort of "bind" to their DNA and it can be passed along to future generations. You have to make a lot of colonies with the proper conditions to try and breed it out. It's true that not all cricket breeders raise their crickets on corn meal bedding which is why you should ask beforehand. But, I'd rather be safe and not feed crickets. If I were to, I'd breed them myself.

5. Why is it bad to feed crickets to gliders? One word - Aflatoxins. Like I said before, it only takes 1 to kill your glider. Peanuts, walnuts, cashews, etc. should be avoided too because they all contain aflatoxins. The only nut that's safe is Pine Nuts.

Aflatoxin is not the actual mold, it is a mycotoxin produced by a specific species of molds - Aspergillus. It causes liver damage (can cause necrosis, cirrhosis, cancer, etc) and can both slowly build up in the system or cause an acute attack from a sudden high level ingested. So there is not necessarily a time frame, but most SG owners see the acute symptoms (meaning their gliders probably had a sudden large dose).

Although Alfatoxin does bind to the DNA, it cannot be passed down to the next generations (that is a myth that started in the SG community).

Any insect can be at risk for carrying aflatoxins (even mealworms) because any grain can have Aspergillus, BUT the reason it is more common in crickets is (as Kiiru also pointed out) they are more often raised in corn bedding.

There are cricket companies that do not raise on corn bedding, but they are few and far between and you have to call them to confirm. If you raise your own crickets (or even house them) their containers need to be cleaned very regularly and fresh food/water supply to avoid bacterial infections in the farm.

Aflatoxin can also be found in dry foods (search the Jorn Act for more info).
