I have read everything I could find on suggie emergency kits and here is what I have managed to assemble. Have I forgotten anything? Do I need to change anything or gotten anything wrong?

Sanitary Supplies:
- Hand sanitizer/Germ-X
- Alcohol wipes (wound/hand cleaning)
- Rubber Gloves
- Mini roll of Paper towels

Wound Care:
- Single use regular Neosporin packs (for non-emergency/small wounds)
- Tri-tops antibiotic ointment (vet prescribed)
- Iodine swab sticks (wound sterilization)
- Baby Anbesol (pain relief)
- Lactated Ringers Solution (sterile saline flushes work also)
- 22 & 25 gauge needles (small needle if giving infrequent small sub-Q doses, large needle for opposite)
- 3cc & 10cc sterile syringes (for sub-Q)
- Bottle of 0.9 Sterile Saline (for flushing wounds, this is not the same as the sub-Q fluid sterile flushes)
- Sterile gauze pads (for wound cover/to clean wounds)
- Q-tips (to clean wounds/apply meds)
- Small adhesive tape (for splint)
- vet wrap (split/wound cover)
- Toothpicks (splint)
- Large Soda Straws (protects tail from SM)

Medication/Feeding:
- 1cc oral syringes (for meds)
- 3cc oral syringes (for feeding/meds/mixing)
- Gliderade (if pushing fluids)
- Pedialyte single and/or Pedialyte Pop (if pushing fluids)
- Baby Apple Juice (if pushing fluids)
- #5 French Catheter (force feeding)
- Chicken baby food (force feed or emergency loss of food supply or emergency evac)
- Mixed Veggies baby food (see above)
- 2 oz ceramic dish (mixing meds/feeding)
- Ensure (to mix meds with, if needed)
- Small box of Raisins (stuck in car with hungry glider)
- Honey

E-collars: prepared and labeled with name in advance
- Shot glass e-collars (for tail/cloaca/back-end SM
- Satellite e-collars (for fluffy gliders, or for non- tail/cloaca SM)
- Strong tape (to secure e-collars)
- Tube/trough bird feeders (feeding a glider in an e-collar)
- Hammock (glider in e-collar often cannot use reg. Pouch)
- Fleece blankets (for burrowing under while in hammock)
- Clothespins/split rings/lanyard hooks (to hang hammock)
- Mole foam & mole skin (for alterations and padding to e-collar)

Evacuation/Travel Needs:
- Emergency candle w/ matches (provides heat and light if no electricity)
- Bottle of water (emergency evac or similar)
- Large fleece blankets sealed in Ziploc bags (for handling in emergency and/or to burrito a glider)
- Emergency Contacts Card (vet, backup vet, emergency all night vet, animal poison line)
- Medical File (with medical records and weekly charts)
- Ink pen/pencil
- Cages (small rept for transport or hospital cage) always set up, actually.
- Zip bonding pouches, one for each cage (for quick transport)
- 4 oz water bottle (we all have to have something to drink out of!)
- Flashlight
- Feeding dishes (separation/evac needs)

Miscellaneous, but still important:
- Emergency Credit card (very near by and easily accessible)
- Styptic powder or silver nitrate stick (for toe nails trimmed too short)
- Tweezers (you never know)
- Digital scale (good to know weight every week for medical file)
- Small scissors (in case I need to help with a quick escape and to cut loose threads as I see them)
- Side edge cut clippers (for trimming nails)
- KY jelly, plain (in case of boy trouble)
- Non-alcohol wipes (like baby wipes)
- Disposable ice pack (in case we need to make a dash to the vet in really hot weather)
- Hand Warmers and large disposable Heat pack (in case we need to dash to vets in cold weather)
- Human heating pad w/thermostat (just in case I can't have a glider right on me, in medical emergency)
- emergency kit Resupply Checklist (what do I need to restock?)

Glucose/calcium for oral use, calcium glubionate and oral glucose

painkiller such as Torbuterol or Buprenex-either will last a year stored in the fridge-for emergency use in case of injury until a vet can be seen. Refrigeration depends on if it's mixed with a base-if injectable form, refrigeration usually isn't necessary.

Baytril (and some other antibiotics such as Clavamox, Amoxicillin) will last 6 months frozen in syringes-and does well as a topical also.

I keep SSD, or Silver Sulfazodine Cream in my kit also. Topical for wounds/burns-helps skin heal quicker.

Remember not to give Ensure to a dehydrated glider (I've personally seen one choke on the claylike remains after the water has been pulled out by the body)

For evacuation/travel, small Reptariums would be ideal as a temporary cage setup-lightweight and break down/put up easily (can carry in a duffel bag), or a large soft side carrier (such as Sherpa) that can double-if evac lasts days, they'll need something other than a pouch.

I keep a variety of babyfood fruits/veggies in jars, and dried fruits (apple, nectarine, peaches, papaya, canteloupe)/veggie(Smith's/Kroger has a freeze dried Corn, called Comforts-great as a healthier snack than yogurt drops, and for an emergency kit-first dried veggie I've seen), also some Canned fruit/veggies-low or no salt.

I'd recommend small popsicle sticks rather than toothpicks (which could break or splinter) as a splint-the craft section in WalMart or Michael's usually carries small bags of them. (I'm sure other places do too)

Hand towel to put between glider and ice/heat packs, or meds and ice pack.

Iodine can also be dabbed on the end of a quicked nail to prevent infection.

Along with medical file, pen/pencil add a small notebook for notes/records.

That's all I can think of-great job! clap

Thanks Xfilefan!

I have 2 questions. What is the "Glucose/calcium for oral use, calcium glubionate and oral glucose" used for?

Also, can gliders use the 27% Baytril injectible solution marked for use in dogs? I always have a bottle on-hand for use in treating rabbits.

My travel cage is a 65 gal rept.

I just want to make sure you are aware - when I wrote this, I should have put that you can only get these supplies from a vet and in doing so you need to learn how and when to use them. SubQ fluids should never be used as an alternative to vet care.

A note on these as well, just because the medications will keep, does not mean you should keep them. You should never use antibiotics or pain meds without vet knowledge/under vet care. By using an antibiotic when you don't know what is wrong, you may worsen the problem (because it was the wrong med) or mask the problem so they cannot find out what the infection is through testing. Even if your vet previously treated something and your treated glider (or other gliders) are showing similar symptoms, you need to have a vet check to make sure it is the same problem before treating. PLEASE never treat an animal on your own. It is cliche, but again, just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

The glucose/calcium supplements should also only be used under vet instruction as too much of either can be just as big a problem as too little and only your vet can properly determine what dosage they should be.

I appreciate the concern. I have more than 2 years of critical care nursing for domestic rabbits under my belt. The only thing I won't do is IV sets.

The last bunny I dealt with was a genetic dwarf of a dwarf breed (1.5 lbs to her brother's 6 lbs) and had a number of issues to deal with. By the end, she was receiving daily injections of Baytril, would need her teeth filed monthly, and I was changing needles between draw and injection to prevent benign abcesses. We still lost her to a pasturella cyst rupturing into her lungs.

I have never medicated with first calling my vet. She knows me, knows my pets, knows what meds I have on hand (since she prescribed them), and tells me when I can medicate and when I need to come in. Welcome to the special needs rescue house!!!

I know, there are always special circumstances. I was just making sure that everyone that read this post wouldn't run out and start stocking antibiotics for their gliders! roflmao

Antibiotics CAN be used as a topical-and in some cases are better than neosporin. They have to come from a vet in the first place, and based on weight. NEVER give a glider a dosage for another animal-a long, slow death from organ failure from overdose is not desirable.

Glucose wont' cause the crash some other sugars do after eating in case of too long without food (think Hurricane Katrina) if the glider is showing symptoms of possibly having low blood sugar. Calcium problems can be secondary to infection as well as dietary.

Of course all of this is subject to the vet instructing the owner how to use them (as with all meds that go into a glider), and when, and going over scenarios in a "what if" situation. I have done this with my vets. I just offered what I keep in MY kit. Painkiller can slow/prevent SM until a vet is gotten to. Ideally, we won't be in a crisis with no transportation, etc...but IF you work with your vet, antibiotics and such can be used at the proper dosage-What one needs to do is have the weight of all the gliders, and ask the vet "what if X happens and so and so symptoms are showing, and there's some kind of disaster"...vet can give a dose based on the weight for EACH glider that can be used in a crisis prior to coming in (document symptoms) if a glider is showing signs of illness and due to some disaster a vet is unattainable for days-you don't want the glider dying in the meantime from lack of treatment-at least you can try a broad spectrum until help is available. Again, that needs to be discussed with the vet. Usually a short course of antibiotics for a suspected problem in such a situation won't hurt even if it's not needed, and could help.

Again, though-you need a dosage based on the weight of the Glider, at the proper dilution, and not a Cat or Dog-which would overdose a glider, and likely cause organ damage.

And if you have a recurrent problem the vet is already aware of, storing meds is a good idea, and can be less expensive in the long run with a recurrent issue. Frequently, you can call and they can have you give a course of PROPERLY MIXED meds based on the fact that the same thing with the same symptoms has been treated before.

It might be I'm just used to describing symptoms, and the vet and I usually thinking the same thing-sometimes she'll tell me on description what to give, and I normally have it on hand. Not all owners get that involved in healthcare. I always consult with my vet, either by phone or in office, before giving meds, however-that is based on a lot of work, communication, and visits with my vet though.

Too much of anything can be bad. It's up to the owner to talk (REALLY talk) to their vet and know how to use these and when.

I wouldn't let a glider die of an infection I knew was there because flooding kept me from going to a vet. I'm not advocating self treatment, but to have on hand in case of major disaster, and consult at least by phone with a medical professional during the disaster-and know what to give that won't hurt in such a situation based on professional advice.
