Anne and I were expecting our first glider baby very soon. Gizmo and Nemo had finally mated, and Nemo was just about 7 weeks along. Today we came home to find that the baby was no longer in the pouch. For a brief moment we were so excited to see our new baby glider, but a short search proved to be tragic. We found the remnants of our baby in the sleeping pouch; the baby had been canabalized. We are so sad and also filled with many questions. Why did this happen so late in the pregnancy? Could it have been one of the other two gliders (Gizmo- the father or Pretty - another female)? Could we have prevented this? What should we do next time? Please help us.

My guess is that the baby was either cannabailized by the mother or the other female. Trios are tricky things and some times the other female doesn't mind the joey until body parts start sticking out and the joey is about to detach, other times, the female will steal the joeys soon after they go IP. If you are planning on breeding, I strongly suggest breaking your gliders up into pairs...

I am so sorry about your baby.
Shawna Who are you networked with? Networking could save your gliders life. Create one now.

I'm sorry for your loss. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shakehead.gif" alt="" /> I have some experience with trios and family groups. I'll help if I can but I need to know how old your pair is and the other female, how long have they been together. Also, it is not uncommon for first time parents to reject their joeys.

Oh gosh, I'm so sorry. I hope if they breed again, the joey will be very healthy. And I agree with spliting them into pairs.
If you have three, then possibly get another one so the non-breeding female will have a friend and possibly she'll breed as well, if the friend is male?

Thanks so much for all of the sympathy and support. Strange series of events... We just found out Pretty is pregnant. Is there often times jealousy issues when two females are pregnant at the same time? Should we put Pretty in a seperate cage by herself? With the father? Please help!!! We would really like to have a little one this time.
Thanks, Anne & Mitch Gizmo (male) Nemo (female) Pretty (female) & Baby
