This is a question about my husband's cousins glider. It is a baby from my mated pair (although all of my gliders were in their care at the time, so it wasn't one I raised or anything) but it had like white pupils on it's eyes. I haven't ever seen a picture of a glider like that, and none of mine have it....it is only THAT glider I have seen like that. What causes that, or what might it mean. I am just really curious! Thanks

thats cataracs (sp?) it means the glider is slightly blind.

It occurs when the mother of the baby is overweight

Hm....that is kinda what I was thinking...that she could be blind or blindish! Is being overweight in the mother the only thing that causes it? I dont want my future babies to have that problem. She doesn't look overly chubby now, though she might have then...I don't know...She is a little more so now that I believe she is expecting...But NOW she is on a proven diet too (Dary's) not just pellets and fruit that they had them on. Anyway...thanks...

I've read that joeys born to an overweight mother can have fat deposits in their eyes that cause blindness. maybe it's that?

Cataracts can be caused by all kinds of things, but I guess an overweight mom is a common cause in gliders. Not sure about that because it's not the case in humans, but obviously gliders aren't humans, are they?

I've heard that here on GC about the "fat deposits" in the eyes of gliders too, but again, just from knowing human eyes, there's not a place in the human's eye where fat can deposit and cause a white pupil.

Did you mean Darcy's diet? That's the one that uses Ensure, right? I think I've heard that Darcy's is one that people use to put on more weight to a glider that's too thin. It's okay to use it, and you're right that it is one of the ones on GC's list of proven diets. You just might watch her weight if she's had a tendency to get a little chubby in the past.

Good luck and welcome to GC! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wave.gif" alt="" />

Thanks...and I will keep an eye on her while she is on Darcy's. They all seem to love it. I make sure to offer all of them a variety of food each night...If she continues to be chubby after baby is born and in between joeys, I will make sure to change the diet...thanks for the heads up. I am SURE glad that humans dont deposit fat on our eyes....Good Lord, that would be bad for ME!! LOL

It could be from an overweight mother, or just from having an overly fatty diet.
