When I purchased my gliders at 18 months old from a friend of my cousins I didn't know much about gliders. After purchasing them I researched and found so much helpful info and advice from everyone here at GC.

I know I have told about the nasty diet they were on (cheetos, Chocolate chip cookies, weeiners, bowl of corn and carrots). I knew I had to research then. Only to find out that the cedar chips in the bottom of the tiny cage was toxic to them!

NOw that I feel comfortable with my knowledge I have read about mill breeders, trade shows etc... So I was curious as to where she bought them from before I got them, since we do have a HUGE trades days close by (Canton Texas). I was scared of what she might tell me and I didn't want to hear, but I was very curious as to where they came from so I asked. And to my fear I found out that they were bought there!

We have had vet bills like crazy and found out that they had a number of parasites which we have already treated and will now also have to treat the Joeys that came OOP 2 days ago.

So here is the question...can someone explain to me what is so bad about getting your babies from a place like this and is there anything I should be concerned about or watch for?

When you get them from a mill the problems are numerous. The vet bills and parasites you are seeing first hand, the fact that your pair may be brother and sister.
They don't give a hoot about health or inbreeding at all. They are usually sold to impulse buyers that are given terrible info on their care(hence the terrible diet and no vet care with your pair). Told how easy they are to care for and then end up as rescues. Like yours, mostly sick rescues.

Things for you to be concerned with are of course the diet trying to get them healthy. No one knows if you'll have more health problems pop up down the road.
Get the male neutered asap to prevent more joeys that are possibly from closely related parents.
Give them all the lovin' they deserve, now that they finally have a home that cares and is taking care of them they have a shot at a happy healthy life.

We got him on a Sunday and Monday morning called to get him neutered and within 3 days he was neutered, but not soon enough. Although they are a joy I am very scared for them. So far they seem to be doing well, but I am aware that anything can go wrong at any time. So we are watching them closely!

Skittles also probably came from a mill, he has been with me since Oct and has not had any problems what so ever. He was immediately put on a good diet and vet checked & given lots of lovin'.

With you doing the research and getting these guys vet care and proper diet and home they will probably be OK.

My opinion is that a glider's start in life is very important. If they were pulled from their parents too early, they miss out on so much. I believe that does impact their overall health and life expectancy. Take as good a care of them as you can and continue w/regular vet checkups and love them w/all you've got.

Here is a link to a web site where information is being collected on Gliders who were purchased from "mill breeders". Please register and provide your information so that we can help with preventing these individuals from selling innocent/sick gliders. SESG
I'm sorry your little ones have had health issues. Sending lots of hugs and prayers.
