Please Help! My glider has been standing in his cage violently shaking - his whole body. He can walk, and all 4 legs work, but he is having trouble navigating. My husband won't be home with my car for another several hours and I hoped you guys could tell me what I should do. His voice isn't working well. either.
Okay-now that the initial panic is more subdued, I tested him for dehydration and he IS dehydrated. The skin on his back 'tented' when pinched. Trying to get liquids into him. I think he may be having some diarrhea also. Is there anything I can give him to help the diarrhea? Also, what is the most common culprit in causing diarrhea in a glider? (His shaking isn't quite as bad now, but still there, and he definitely isn't as active as usual. Also-what I meant by 'his voice isn't working'-; he tried to crab at me when I took him out of his cage, and it was hoarse and not nearly as long as usual - like he didn't have the energy for it. Thanks to all who respond; you are really a great bunch of people!

This glider can be having seizures!! Try to hydrate him, feed him some pedialyte. Theres nothing you can do at home. This glider needs medical attention ASAP!! Is there a mother in law or mother that can give you a ride or a close friend, maybe family memeber. You need to get him to a vet as soon as possible! Please keep us updated!

Thanks-I'll try to get liquids into him. Unfortunately all of my family lives either in CA or TX, both of which are a long way from UT.

As soon as you can get into the vet, go! You need to have some tests run, including a fecal smear, urinary analysis, and x-rays to check for hypocalcemia. What diet is this glider on? Is there any kind of toxin he could have gotten into? Make sure he gets plenty of water and some pedialyte if possible. It might be helpful to use a syringe (without needle of course) to get some fluids in him.

My glider is on the BML diet with fresh fruits, veggies, nectars, and always an available water supply. He also has the Glider Booster supplement on all of his food.

The only advice I can really give you about what you can do now is to go to www.gliderhealth.com and call one of the people on the list. They can help you try and figure out what could be wrong and let you know what kind of tests to ask for when you get into the vet. I know how hard this is to go through....just hang in there and hopefully you will find out what is wrong and how to correct it.

[:"blue"]Would you also be so kind to post the age of this glider/how long you have had him/where you purchased him/any changes in the environment of the house such as painting, spraying for insects, anything of that nature.

Any and all information will help.

As I'm sure you already know, it is extremely important to get this little one to the vet as quickly as possible. IMHO if your husband returns after normal clinic hours, try to find an emergency vet. These little ones can go downhill extremely quickly. [/]

Jen,

This shaking in gliders has come up a few times and I can only encourage you to find some way to get to a vet. There is really no way to treat it yourself, you can only try and make sure that they stay hydrated until you can get them to the vet. Keeping this little one in my prayers, let us know what the vet is able to find.

[:"brown"] For hydrating...use pedilyte with 50% apple juice or appricot necture. Keep the glider warm (this may require you placing him in a clean pouch and tucking it under your shirt. Dehydration if severe will cause a glider to become shocky. SO by forcing fluids and keeping him warm will help prevent this. For diarreah...Keopectate can be given. Will not solve his prolem but may help to keep the diarreah from being too liquidy. .20 ml can be given orally and is very safe. May have to give it every two to three hours.

Now...his illnes will need medical help. Sub q fluids with Dw5 is the best and quickest way to hydrate and will prevent him from rebounding due to lack of sugar in the blood. Once you get him to a vet...have the vet show you how to do the injections as they may need to be given every three to four hours.

Tests to ask for..Fecal Smear, and a UA and if possible a C&S of his urine if the fecal smear does not show any parasite or bacteria.

You will be at the mercy of an emerg. clinic if you cannot locate a vet after 6 pm. So, suggest you write down information posted here on the board and take it with you. Experience with most emerg clinics...they are not experienced with gliders and will treat for HLP without looking for Primary cause.

Please post update to this threat so information is not lost.

Sending Get Well Wishes for a speedy recovery. [/]
