in a nutshell

4 days ago, luna's face swelled and her eye shut, i took her to the vet, they gave her antibiotics (cefadroxyl) told me to give it to her twice daily for 5 days. I did so, earlter today i found her with a hole in her cheek. She had made no discomforting noises during the night, nor had i seen her like that when i had checked on her a few hours before. So this happened in a 3 or 4 hour window period. Again i took her to the ER, they looked at her eye, checked her teeth and gave me eye drops (more antiobiotics) and another oral medication for pain. I also made her an E collar, however it is bothering me seeing her tussle and roll everywhere trying to fight it off. TODAY HAS BEEN MISERABLE. if i missed anything please let me know. thanks

Heather

You did the right thing by taking her to the vet right away, and for making the e-collar and putting it on her. She will struggle, but it's so important that she keep it on. Hopefully it's not too tight that her nose turns purple, but not too loose that she can wiggle out of it.

Sweetie, you need to take her back in and have this checked again by a vet ASAP. I don't like the sounds of what's happened. They might have to drain this and possibly change medications.
Sending you lots of prayers.

I agree that it might need draining (sounds like it may have ruptured on it's own???) Keep a close eye on it (I know you are). I'm sorry you and she are going through this, I hope tomorrow is better for you both! hug2

From what you've described in the text I've made bold above, the swelling was caused by an infection abscess. The hole is actually a fistula that developed on its own to help the abscess heal. A fistula is a small drainage passage that allows an abscess to drain. This is a very GOOD thing! It is not caused by self-mutilation and the e-collar is NOT necessary. Please take the e-collar off of her right away. She will need to be able to groom her face so that it can continue to heal.
I had the exact same thing happen with my Cricky when he had a facial abscess. If the swelling occurs again (and it is likely to within a few months), then bring her back to the vet and ask them to drain the abscess and collect a tissue/fluid sample to send out for Culture & Sensitivity. This will tell them exactly what type of antibiotic is needed to treat the specific type of infection present. In Cricky's case, he had a type of staph infection that was caused by a sinus infection run amock. A specialty pharmaceutical company made up the antibiotics for him and after that, it didn't recur again.
Here are a few pictures of Cricky's infection, abscess and finally, the fistula.
In this first picture, you can clearly see the swelling caused by the abscess:

In this picture, you can see how the eye was affected by the abscess and infection:

In this picture, you can clearly see the fistula that developed and allowed the abscess to drain:

Thank you for all the responses and advice. I did take her back to the vet and they said that there wasn't much else they could do because the abcess had drained itself and it was exactly the right thing that needed to be done (exactly like sugarglidersuz said!!!! genius) and all i had to do was keep a close eye on her and make sure she got her meds. Today i woke up and again she was struggling with the ECOLLAR and has made it her life conquest to take it off. And a few minutes ago i went ahead and gave her the medications and eye drop but i was horrified to see her eye ball had crusted shut and i didn't wanna pry it open so i called (like a crybaby :() and they said to warm up some water and soak her eye with a towel. I asked if a saline solution (this is what the bottle says :sterile multy purpose solution removes protein when used daily, cleans, disinfects, rinses, stores.) and he said it was a better choice then regular water So i warmed some up in the microwave and soaked her eye and it worked. She got her meds, fought me some more, gave me a sad look because of the collar and continued fighting. HOWEVER if you are absolutely sure that she does not need it and will not further damage her face then i will take it off because i have confidence in my glider peers. I am a bit nervous to do so because it breaks my heart to worry that she might further damage herself. i will include pictures below of how she looked moments before i took her into the vets office. Now if anyone has any other critical information seeing as how i am not on the site very often please feel free to text or call me at (915) 867-6336

oh, and also, the neutered male glider is trying to kill luna and i have seperated them. She took full advantage of her having a dibilitating collar and bit at her tail furiously. I WAS [censored]!!!!! i love him but i can't believe he was doing this. So they are seperated, will remain seperated for the remainder of their lives. Im sad....very very sad...because i think he's the one who did this to her eye.

If I might make a tiny non-glider-guru comment...?

I think that the eye crusting over is yet another sign that her body is doing as it should. That is the eye's natural defense against whatever nastiness has hurt it or is surrounding it.

Cooincidentally, when my Calliope scratched my eyeball, it swelled up and the crusted over with horrible gunk - but that's exactly what it was supposed to do, and I didn't try to wash it at all for about 3 days, by which point the eye was almost completley healed.

smile I am so glad that your little one is doing so much better! hug2 hug2 hug2

Ahhh, poor little sweetheart heart I definitely would take the collar off of her now. I really don't think she'll do any damage to herself at this point in time. Keep an eye on her fistula, and if it looks like it's getting worse, you can always put the collar back on her again, but it should start to heal fairly quickly. hug2

i just finished taking it off and she climbed into her pouch. I dont even want to think of the bonding damage this had caused because it seems like she is so hurt by what i did to her and acts as though betrayed....:(

Believe it or not, she'll get over the betrayal very quickly and as you give her meds to her over the next week or so, she'll become more bonded to you by the extra handling and care you're giving her mlove I know it doesn't seem like it right now, but there really is HOPE at the other end of the rainbow cloud9

Thank you again SugargliderSuz for all your advice and attention and to everyone else. Ill keep you posted of any changes.

About the male glider, it may not have been him that did this to his face. Gliders in the wild will attack wounded colony mates because the wounded will slow the colony down and make it more susceptible to predators. Sad but true. So he may have been acting on that instinct. Separate her til she heals, then try reintroducing her to the male.

She most likely is in quite a bit of pain from the infection. Did your vet prescribe any type of pain medication for her?
