I've read in a couple places that pine shavings shouldn't be used as bedding in glider cages as it is toxic. These sites recommended aspen shavings instead. Is there any truth to pine shavings being toxic as they are widely used for housing other small mammals?

don't know why, all i know is to stay away from all wood shavings (cedar, pine, etc). someone will along with the specifics. i either use newspaper or nothing at all since I like to clean daily. (less smell)

Yes, pine shavings are toxic, they can cause resperatory problems.

I personnaly use aspen since its the only safest wood shavings to use. They help keep the smell down really.

Thanks for confirming this for me. Anyone know why it isn't a problem for other small mammals but is for gliders?

Pine and cedar shavings when wet give off toxic oils that can cause respritory problems. I wouldn't use pine for hamsters either. Aspen is a safe choice but really, other products like CareFresh works better.

Like Teresa said. The other shavings I would not trust either. They are now finally realizing that these woods do not make good shavings for small animals becouse of them giving off that toxic fume. CareFresh is ok, but I found it to be way too dusty, and I just didn't feel comfortable. Puppy pads work great though, and I use to also use newspaper. But stay away from cat litter as a bedding also.

one reason it wasn't picked up on as soon with some small animals like hamsters is that they have such a short life span anyway. They only live about 3 years so the fact that the bedding wasn't good for them wasn't easily spotted.

With gliders having such a long life span the respiratory problems did come up and we learned that they weren't good for any of the little critters.

This LINK provides some great info. on the dangers of pine/cedar bedding and also provides info. on safe beddings for small animals.
