With this heat, we have been having trouble with our power the past couple of days. Our grid has gone out multiple times lately.

No power means, of course, no AC downstairs and no fans. Last night it went out around 9 PM and didn't come back on until 3-4 in the morning, and it was incredibly hot in my house. I'd been working to cool down my room (where the gliders are kept) all day, but once the power went out there wasn't much I could do (it was only slightly cooler outside). I would have moved them downstairs, as it is usually cooler down there, but they were already awake and it wasn't any better there anyway.

So, on these hot nights, what CAN you do if the power goes out? Last night, I put an ice pack in a zippered bonding pouch (closed) and put that in the cage. I also put ice in a few bowls and placed them on top of and next to the cage (not sure if that did anything, but I tried..) in hopes that it would help.

That about covers it. You had some really good ideas. I know how nasty it can get without AC. We still don't have any in the house. I've threatened to live in the car, but haven't gone that far yet. lol

Good ideas, though. Will keep that in mind.

I have battery operated crate fans (from my dog showing days) that are small, but perfect for cooling a glider cage at least a little if it were needed wink

Good idea, Becki. My power went out AGAIN today, for who knows how long. I did freeze a soda bottle full of water and put that in the cage when I got home and found the power off, but this heat (and the unreliability of our power company) is really worrying me.

I have battery operated fans and frozen water bottles in the deep freeze. Besides coming in handy to keep cool in the summer, they're good for first aid, keeping stuff in a cooler cold and make the deep freeze more efficient by keeping it full.

Also make sure to keep their water cold.. that way if they are overheating, they'll have nice cold water to help cool off, and it helps to keep them hydrated while possible sweating so much.

Could you wipe them down with a wet washcloth? Just to let evaporation cool them a little? I made a thinner pouch for summer, too. They don't seem to mind the heat as much as I do. We don't have AC either and if it wasn't for the price of gas, the car would sound good.
