[:"brown"]Guiardia is a protozoa infection. Indications usually are weight loss, and then sever diarreah. Your two gliders...the fur color is different with both and is related to the genetics of their parents. Sometimes diet can affect the color also. You may want to have your new glider vet checked for wellness to make sure she is healthy and free of parasites or protozoa infections. Then suggest a 30 isolation period befor introduction between the two. [/]

We have taken in several rescues that were on poor diets or dry diets that had a yellowish tint to the under side. After switching them to the BML diet, they turned white on their underside in a few weeks and lost the scruffy looking fur. You might want to review your gliders diet. If you are feeding a good diet, a visit to the vet is in order. mary h

My male's chest turns yellow whenever he starts marking things and spraying his scent all over. I'm not sure if you have a male or not, but I'm pretty sure discoloration with marking is normal.

Thank you to all who have made me feel better. Loking through some pictures from three months ago He seem the same color and weight(he might be heavier now . The new girl came from a very reliable owner who seemed resposible and VERY clean. I am really big on clean cages and this one where the new glider came in from the owner looked impecable not to mention that glider herself looked superb! It might be too late for that waiting period but it would have been a great idea. I guess I am a bit paranoid. Marble and Jax(who died at the estimated guess of 10)went to the vet in January and other than the warning about the age of Jax, the vet gave them a clean bill! I will kep a VERY close eye on the symptoms you all suggested. Thanks again!!

Gil, why were you thinking Giardia? It's certainly possible, but giardia wouldn't necessarily turn a glider's skin yellow. Yellow skin would most likely be a product of liver damage or injury. But yellow FUR is probably marking or a product of a dirty cage or diet. HERE is a picture of my Gladys, who had giardia when this picture was taken. She's the one with the sallow nose. It wasn't so much jaundice or yellow in color but was definitely "off" -- However, lots of gliders with giardia don't have this as a symptom, so I wouldn't look for that. What you would look for would be a healthy appetite but losing weight, and eventually lethargy and no longer wanting to eat. If that happens, a trip to the vet is definitely in order. The others are right about isolation. New gliders should always be isolated, in case they have something that could hurt your other glider(s). If you just can't do it for a full 30 days, at least do it for a week or two I'm so glad you have a new glider. I'll be looking forward to new pictures!!

Gil, giardia, doesn't always have noticable symptoms, until they are really sick, as was stated above. we highly suggest regular fecal checks, and if the vet even finds one shell, then have them treat it, sometimes the checks come out neg the first time, and full at another. the shelled mullosk attaches to their intestional wall and goes into a dormant stage for several months. When Mine was first diagnosed with it, by the time I noticed the weight loss, 4 grams in 2 weeks, the only thing i noticed is that she just wasn't acting right, eating well activity level up, but something just wasn't right. By that time she had a bunch. The symptoms listed are common, but some show no symptoms at all. Also to add to the lists, add dehydration as well. I suggest minimum fecals at about 6 months, but mine gets tested every 3 due to the fact she shows no symptoms. and the dormant stage is about 3 months, it is better to be safe than sorry.

That does it. They are going to the vet! Better safe than sorry was the best statement used by Bourbon! I would rather be out $60 than go throug another loss. Besides, My wife and kids culd not handle my mood swings if there was something wrong with ny gliders. They would pay double!
