My Monkey is 10 weeks OOP yesterday. The other day I found him nursing on his mother. I have feed him mealies, yogurt drops, baby cereal and I have even watched him eat BML. Is it normal for him to still be nursing? If so than wouldn’t 8 wks be too young for them to be sold? He is staying with mom and dad but I was just wondering if anyone else’s joeys have nursed this long. He is my first joey so I don’t know if this is the norm. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nixweiss.gif" alt="" />

A glider at 8 wks is pretty much weaned, they get their foraging skills from their parents...I know my joeys learned how to eat and drink from their parents (I use these little bowls that are elevated) I didn't even have to introduce the hamster type water bottles...Anyways, in the wild the young will continue to nurse. One of my gliders who has a son in her cage (who is 8 wks 1 day) just had babies wiggle their way into her pouch so I don't think he still nurses...I don't think she'd let him. Anyways, I don't know what you want to do, but I think in the wild they nurse longer (? I read it somewhere but I forget where!) I hope this helps a little!

Every glider is different. My personal feeling is that 8 weeks is to early that 10-12 weeks is more appropriate. I have heard of other joeys nursing 12-13 weeks.

Judge not until you have walked in their shoes and lived their lives. What you see online is only part of the story.

Hmm.. Just seems strange because he is eating from the dishes too just like the parents. I don't know how much he eats but I have seen him eating and I have feed him treats. I thought he was done nursing.

I think that a lot of times, joeys will continue to nurse for comfort. My first joey nursed until she was 13 weeks OOP, when I finally pulled her because she was starting to stress her mom.... The best way to find out if a joey is weaned is to seperate it from mom for a night or two and see how he does on his own. If he's not eating well, just put him back with mom and try again in a week or so.

Thanks for the advise!

I think he was doing it for comfort. I was holding the pouch with all three (mom, dad, and joey) and they wanted to go back to sleep after palying for a few minutes durning the day. Monkey was totally relaxed on his back with his legs up in the air while I pet his belly. Too cute! Mom is really tolerant and gets more stressed over dad always trying to groom her tail. She is always bickering at him to leave her alone but she is a great mom. I'll keep an eye out now that I know he is still nursing. If mom starts to get stressed I'll seperate them for a bit to give her a break. I wouldn't have thought to do that.
I also believe that 8wks is too soon to let them go. Now that I have watched the processes. Monkey is very independant but at the same time he is already very bonded to his parents and I could not image seperating them. I couldn't breed.... I would try and end up keeping them after seeing how much they love eachother. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/littleglider.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/littleglider.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/littleglider.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/littleglider.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/littleglider.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/littleglider.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/littleglider.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/littleglider.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/littleglider.gif" alt="" />
