Soooo... I think I've seen it before, but I just now started reading. I haven't read all of it yet, but I've got to admit, Kathy has a lot of good info on the site. I found a few things I didn't like, like a snack shack for sale (includes alfalfa), and recipes gotten from Glider University shakehead , but other than that, most of the info is not only correct, but noteworthy. She does not recommend breeding gliders, has a correct diet on the page, and recommends keeping them in pairs and taking them to the vet. And I specifically remember her contract for buying a glider... I may have a copy around here somewhere. Not someone I'd buy from knowing what I know now, but figured I'd at least give credit where credit was due. Especially since she was so crazy about her gliders when I saw her. jump

I bought both of my gliders from her, and she is very crazy about her gliders. She does give out a LOT of good information, not much different from what I've gotten on here as well. Of course, like you, there are a few things I don't agree with, but we all have personal choices. Just like with any other pet. But yes, she does give correct information and ENCOURAGES new owners to contact her anytime with any questions. Thanks for giving her credit where due!

I'm not sure about the point of this post...

Are you asking people's opinion on whether or not we as glider owners would feel comfortable purchasing a glider from this person based on the website?

Or are you simply asking for people to critique the website?

Thanks for the clarification.

Sorry, anyone can talk the talk but can they walk the walk. My friend bought two joeys from her and one died three days after she got it, on the way to the vet.She was heartbroken. upset The vet said no way was it 8wks oop and the other one didn't even know how to eat on its own very well but she got it through. They had to be pulled to early. My friend knows better now but she bought them at a flea market at the time and she said Kathy was a very nice lady and did tell her she needed two glider. That of course is true but for the good of the glider or to make a sale? shakehead She has alot of gliders, I just wonder how she keeps them all straight that's all.

There's a lot of controversy over Gliders R Us, so I just wanted everyone to see the site, and to see that, mill or not, she's not the devil. shakehead

Mill = Bad

Sorry when it comes to that stuff it IS just that black and white. Having decent info on a website doesn't excuse selling sick and under 8 weeks OOP joeys.

Agreed. But then we'd have to define mill (for profit only, I think) and get into a discussion that I've already had...

But the fact is that I've never seen any evidence firsthand. When I saw her place, my first thought was, "now here's someone who loves their gliders". I had to wait several weeks for her to have babies old enough, they were small, active, and bright-eyed, she was wearing a pouch shirt and putting babies in left and right, made me sign a contract to take the baby to the vet, and had lots of toys and food all around.

I wouldn't buy from her now just because I wouldn't want to take the chance, but I've never seen the evidence of a mill.

She is partners in the Critter r us store here local and the Joey's were 7 weeks old there (per her partner) I know mine are bigger than theirs were and they were supposed to be the same age. I have never had small joeys so I personally question the age of the gliders. I did find out there is a different vet working with her and he said they are educating them more!?!?!

For profit only? Seriously? Having a BARN full of sugar gliders in 1 x 1 cubes ...IS FOR PROFIT ONLY.

Why else? Fun? I'm not sure about you, but I don't want to clean ANY cages for "fun", let alone HOW MANY 1x1 cubes??? FOR PROFIT.

Why else would you sell edible shaks, because it SURE isn't for "good of the glider"... it's FOR PROFIT.

Why else would you sell and promote leashes?... FOR PROFIT.

Why else would you hire people to work NUMEROUS flea market booths (Ohio, Tennessee, and another state I don't remember...) ALL have booths in flea markets that are run by KATHY. Why else? FOR PROFIT.

... do I need to keep going?

All of her gliders are small. She doesn't feed as much protein as most breeders, and I believe that's why, because Kat has always been small. She didn't grow up to the "right size" just because I started feeding her and raising her- it's the way her line is.

Now if you want to read about someone I'm ready to flame, no holds barred, go here:
http://www.perfectpocketpets.com/index.php

I wish I could have 5 minutes with these people in a locked room, I swear. I'm ashamed to say it, but I think I'd throw my creed of "black belt discipline" out the window in order to KICK THEIR BUTTS!!!!!! GRRRRR!!!

I agree, I'm just saying that I've never seen this evidence, 'cept for the shak. And that's not enough proof that someone's a bad person for me. Gosh, I got one of those at Petsmart when I first got my gliders, not knowing it was bad. Does that make me a bad glider owner?

No, because you didn't KNOW better.

She KNOWS better and continues to do so.

Just like she knew that one of her "employees" in Ohio was pocket-knife neutering male gliders for $50 in the parking lot.... did she fire her? Nope. Not for MONTHS AND MONTHS after this was told to her.

And by the way, on my forum there is a whole thread devoted to her and her flea market sellin' buddies...they're 'trying to clean up their act' (their words) and they've redone the website. Changing a few words around to read what they think people want to hear from them does not change their character...or lack thereof.

Mio, as others have posted, we have been down this road several times before, and it always gets way out of hand by GliderCENTRAL posting standards. Nothing has really changed that we can see.

I was reading the introduction on her homepage and it states that suggies are on the endangered species list? That's the first I've heard of that..Can someone clarify or is that a typo?

I didn't say she was an angel, I just said she wasn't the devil. wink

Personally, I just can't say anything bad unless I repeat the words of others. I'm telling you what I've seen. I've been to her place- it looked wonderful. She was crazy about these babies. I'd be lying if I said otherwise. Personally, I'm not really "for" breeding in general unless it's on a small scale to improve the species. But although I would never associate with her again to be safe, I also won't bad mouth her when I've never seen the proof myself.

Do NOT buy a leash! From ANYONE!

Leashes are dangerous to gliders. Any style is bad. If you want to keep your glider secure, keep it in a closed pouch.

Plus, if you buy anything from her it is only giving her more money, encouraging her to keep running her mill.

i already have the leash that came with mango but we only used it outside so that she would not run away that's what they told me to do there but they had all the gliders there on leashes and my mom asked why on of the gliders looked smaller but was supposedly the same age as the other, the guy selling them looked scared for a second then pretended not to hear. shakehead

If you are worried about the glider running away, you should not have the glider out. I'm sorry, but I don't want any gliders to get hurt because of these.

yup yup yup. Leashes can damage the gliding membrane. If you don't trust the glider to stay on you, keep it inside. I can take Kat and Keito anywhere with me without having to worry, but I'm not certain about Christy and Louie yet. I bought two leashes from exoticnutrition when I first got Kat, but I never used them. I ended up turning them into toys! wink

That is proof right there! This guy knew something was wrong but kept quiet! That is why we are SO against millbreeders!

As for leashes, the best leash is a good bond between glider and owner, minus the leash.

IMO if you have 5 or more breeding pairs, you're testing the "good breeder standards" line. Are there breeders out there with 5 or more pairs that are good breeders? ABSOLUTELY. However, in *more cases than not*, I do not feel the gliders live the life they should; it takes a great effort to keep your gliders healthy and happy when there's that many and most don't have the effort it seems. If you cannot keep your gliders, all of them, FOREVER whether they're breeding or not, the glider is not your pet and you are not a responsible breeder and owner. (I understand sometimes things happen and gliders have to be rehomed - I'm not faulting anyone that at least HONESTLY tries their best to keep them forever.) If you do not have the time to PERSONALLY meet and/or interview EVERY person that buys one of your joeys, you are not in it for the right reasons because at that point it is about profit, not the experience or the well being of the glider(s). IMO a good breeder is willing to keep a joey until an ideal home is found and they WILL turn down a home that's not ideal to help prevent their LOVED PET from being rehomed down the line. A good breeder also won't make any money - the reputable breeders on this site can attest to that!

I appreciate large scale breeders that maintain their gliders' environment and diet properly. However, any large scale breeder is a huge contribution to the root of the problem if they will sell to anyone that has money - and if you breed on such a large scale, how can you turn down homes and how can you NOT sell to just anyone? You'd have mountains of gliders if you were as picky about homes as you should be. That's how so many rescues fall into circulation and too many of them never stop at a good and/or forever home. If you can't or don't take the time to ensure a good, knowlegable home (to the best of your ability; no one can predict every outcome) you're helping the problem; 1 breeding pair or 100. It just usually happens to be the large scalers that can't do this and maintain an ideal lifestyle.

Bottom line - unless you are an exeptional breeder (and I know of several people on this board who are) who cares greatly about each individual glider and it's needs, you're the problem. Sorry, it's JMHO. I don't care how nice you are or how many questions you answer. I don't care how clean your facilities are or how many toys your gliders have. Although, obviously, those things are ideal in any situation compared to the alternative, they still don't take away the fact that it is a business instead of an experience and that's the problem. If your gliders are well cared for by you but you can't take the time to make sure they will have that benefit forever, what is your positive contribution to the glider world?

Agreed. Do I have to keep saying that I don't agree with her? shakehead

If you can't understand that the original point of this post was NOT to defend her, merely to point out that she does have accurate information, you haven't been reading very closely. You are just looking for an opportunity to slam people, which I disagree with almost as much as I disagree with people who breed for profit. If I have to say that I'm not defending her practices one more time, I swear I'm gonna go join Glider University and start bashing BML... roflmao
