Hi and thank you for any info.
I had my male TeWa Netured appx 3 weeks ago. He bounced back very quickly and was back in wiht my girls in appx 4 days. I just noticed tonight at his pom is crusty (they did an incisional neuter), and his penis is out about 1/2 inch or so and one side almost looks dead, like the end of it is brown and withered. he other side (the splits I am refering to) is nice and pink the way it always has been. I went on here to see if I oculd get an answer and I ended up here and learning a small amount about sm.
Any advice and help is appreicated. It is now almost midnight where I am, I can call the vet first thing in the morning, anything I can do until them or am I worrying for nothing ( I am sure that is not the case). I look forward to an answer........

You should try to find a 24 hour emergency vet - the fact that his penis is out and dry is cause for concern! If the tissue turns black (necrotic) it can poison the blood. worried

Keep him with you to make sure he doesn't attempt to harm his penis (or the incision site). KY Jelly might help - normal, not warming - but I'm not sure that it would do any good, or if you should even use it now that it is brown. Hopefully someone else will know.

Do you have an ecollar? If he starts going after himself, you will need to put one on him, or else hold him wrapped in fleece until you get to the vet.

If it's black/brown and withered, that's most likely necrotic tissue, which means it's dying and will most likely spread. You need to get ahold of a 24-hour vet clinic or vet ahold of your vet on-call...here is the link to the FL vet Database:

http://www.glidercentral.net/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/69788#Post69788

Also, getting him into an e-collar, esp. if you see him going after it might be a good idea.v The link for instructions and a picture can be found here:

http://www.glidercentral.net/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/69788#Post69788

Here's pics and follow-along instructions on what to do (make sure you have all supplies on hand):

I'd also recommend separating him from his cagemates in case they start messing with it, that could turn bad very quickly.

Do you have a 24hour Walgreens or Walmart in your area. You can get some there.

If you have a 24-hour store, get it there...it's in the foot section, Dr. Scholl's makes it...

Heck with the ecollar, get that glider to the vet frown It could be much worse by morning, possibly to the point of no repair.

(Of course an ecollar is better than nothing, but I'd be driving to an emergency vet rather than a 24 hour store)

Ok I went to my 24 hour wal mart, I got all of the supplies, made the collar and he keeps slipping right out of it. He looks like his eyes are gonna bug out and he still gets out. I have put ky jelly on hiis pom and penis. He was grooming it as I was holding him. I do not know what else to do. I do not want to break his little neck or squeeze his eyes out. He is a very active boy.
If anyone else has any suggestions, plese let me know............

OHHHHH see this is as far as my knowledge goes, I've never had to use an e-collar, but you are probably looking at an all-nighter if you can't get the e-collar to stick because you'll need to keep a close eye on him if there's absolutely no 24 hour vet clinic near you....

If he keeps grooming it, if you have a larger piece of fleece you can kind of burrito wrap him in it until someone comes along in the near future with more extensive advice....

Were you able to get the e-collar to stay on him yet? If not, please call me right away! 440-953-0904 - I will be home until about 9 a.m. ET, then again after about 11 a.m. (have a doctor's app't this morning). One trick that helps with getting the e-collar to stay on is to make sure that you trim the molefoam so that it doesn't cover about 3/4" from the end of the neckline of the collar, that way, when the collar is put on, the two ends can overlap each other without the bulk of the molefoam. Also, put duct tape along the end and around the top edge of the collar once it's on the glider... Here are some pictures from my web site to show you:

Step 1: Cut a strip of duct tape about 1.5" wide, then fold 1/4" over and stick to itself, making a tab for easy removal. Set this piece aside (I stick just a bit of it to the edge of my kitchen counter). Then, cut another strip of duct tape about 1" wide, then fold 1/4" over and stick to itself. Set this piece aside also.

Step 2: Place 1.5" wide strip of duct tape along edge of E-Collar, as shown, keeping folded over tab exposed at unattached end.

Step 3: Having an assistant hold glider securely, wrap E-Collar around glider's neck, overlapping edges of collar, then stick the duct tape to the overlapped edge, rubbing down along duct tape to ensure secure attachment of tape.

Step 4: Attach 1" strip of duct tape to inside of collar about half-way down length, as shown, keeping folded over tab exposed at unattached end.

Step 5: Fold duct tape over and attach to outside of e-collar, rubbing down along duct tape to ensure secure attachment of tape.

Step 6: E-Collar should be snug, but not tight. Make sure that E-Collar isn't too tight by checking your glider's nose. If nose turns blue or purple within first two minutes of putting collar on, it is too tight and collar will need to be loosened.

Please do call if you still need help with this. From what you've described, the one fork of his penis is becoming necrotic and if he hasn't already started to Self Mutilate, he will start soon unless kept in an e-collar to prevent him from getting to it. When you bring him to your vet, if the vet needs to consult with another vet about treatment, please have your vet call Dr. Tim Tristan at 361-994-1145.

Please keep us posted hug2

Ok we went to his vet. The vet does not want to do any kind of surgery for many reasons but hte main is he does not htink it will help the sm.
He gave him a shot of pain killer/anti inflamatory meds. And he gave me antibiotics, one drop twice a day.
I called Suz when we got back because I still could not seem to get the collar on him right. She walked me through told me he would be mad about it (and he is) but I finally got it on him without him turning blue. This is te second time it is on. I hope we can keep it on for now. I have well lubbed his pom and peepee. He is going bananas. But it is on him and we are on our way I hope. Suz told me all is not lost on his penis yet becaus eit is not black. hopefully we can get moisture to it and with the meds it may be fine, phew.
I REALLY appreciate all the help. I am so sad for my little guy, the main thing is I do not want to hurt him, they seem so fragile.
I am headed to the store to get him some feeders. I will so keep you all posted.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
Diane
PS. i think i may just go to vet school adn do only gliders, lol. It seems like we need more vets in that area.

Poor baby, but it is for his own good (and he will forgive you!) Looks good to me. You may want to invest in one of those avian collars as they have three sets of snaps, so you can make it bigger or smaller.

I got mine from my vets. I can get one for you and send it to you, just let me know, will pick it up tomorrow. I did notice, glad it came in handy! He looks good and he will forgive you. You are better than me, when Petey was sick, I tried for two days and could not get a collar on him! (But in my defense, he got the one off the vet put on him while he was 'under'. We ended up doing it again when he was awake, took THREE OF US! lol)

Well here we are day 2. I am not so sure about his penis. It looks dark but it could be because of the meds. The side that was heathly and pink is the side that is dark now. I am not giving up hope. I will tell you the antibiotics are hard to give one drop. I keep getting much more than a drop out. But I am managing. He has kept his cone on. And he is eating from the trough (sp) like bird feeders plus he ate 4 mealies this morning, well maybe 5, momma is feeling bad for him. He is peeing all over his things BAD.
Over all I have a good outlook, and pray to God that he is ok.
It is so funny how much these little guys take from your heart.
One day day about 6 more to go, *sigh*............

I have a question for the people with experience with this here....if the necrosis is spreading, (I know he's only been on an antibiotic a short time), do you wait it out a few days and see if it stops spreading or do you act more aggressively? I've never dealt with this myself, Giz is neutered, but it could happen to other body parts and I'd be interested to know...
