I wanted to get a flower pot and make a hole in it... Do I just fill the bathtub up and drill or dreml under the water??? How do I do this?

Secondly, I wanted to paint it, what is safe for the gliders? I have seen a lot of cute ones (Ebay) painted neat colors and got to thinking that there has to be some kind of paint I can use.

Would I have to put in in a kiln, bake it, ????? I have no idea where to even start.

Can anyone help me? Thanks!

I'm lost, what do you want a flower pot for that you would need to drill a hole in it?

As for paint, no type of paint is recommended to use around the gliders, but I guess it depends on what you are wanting to do with this thing. Is it for their cage?

I'm sorry I cant be much help right now, but please explain and maybe than I can.

I actually have seen a couple pictures of people using flower pots as a nest box or somewhere for them to hangout in. I saw a specific one on Ebay that I really liked that was painted a rainbow theme to match the beautiful cage pouches she was selling.

Yes, it would go in the cage, and they way to drill or make a hole in these things so you do not crack the rest of the pots are done under water...

I hope I don't sound weird asking. I wish I had a picture to show you... Does anyone know what I'm talking about???

Thanks.

I found what I was talking about:

http://cgi.ebay.com/SUGAR-GLIDER-POUCHES...1QQcmdZViewItem

Does that look safe? I really like it! I know paint isn't good, but I'm wondering if paint is what she used or if she coated it with something else...

That is cute! I think maybe it's covered with fleece. It seems to match the pouch it's with.

I'm not sure about how to make the hole in the pot. There is something called a hole saw used to make the hole in doors for doorknobs, but I'm not sure if you could use one and not break the pot. I like Dremel tools. I used one to make my cage recently. That might be the best way to do it, but you can't use an electrical power tool underwater. Maybe you could just soak the pot first.

I have to agree with peeperkeeper. It looks as though the pot is covered with fleece. Drilling is tricky. I would try the hole saw. Soak the pot and just go very, very slowly and resoak frequently. It does look very cute. I wonder if it would get stinky fast cause it is so pourous? Anyway, good luck with it!!

I think I read there that the flower pot is plastic if that helps any so you don't have to put it in a kiln. Really cute idea though. I love it!

You're very right, the flower pot is covered in fleece. :o) Oops, good eye everyone! I still wonder if it's plastic or ceramic. I couldn't find where it said it was plastic. Either way, I don't think I'm talented enough to sew a cover for that flower pot. LOL Thanks again everyone!

The pot is plastic. I would think sewing a cover and getting it to stay would be difficult with suggies running in and out and pulling on the fabric. Looks like it would be easier to glue the fleece to the pot than to sew one, but don't know what glue is safe to use and how you would wash it once it was soiled.

Non toxic hot melt glue would work but I don't know how well it would hold up to washing...

Yeah, I figure if I got it on... Washing it would be out of the question. I guess if I went ahead and did it, I'd be okay with throwing it out after I was done with it or ripping the fleece off... What do you all think about the velcro strips???

We used the sticky velcro strips to make our own floor for Roxie & Stitch's cage... There isn't a drop pan so we wanted something that could be taken out and cleaned on a reg. basis. The only problem was that they kept getting under the fleece and it wasn't surving it's purpose.

I put the soft side all the way around the floor & the hook side on the back of a fleece square. It worked all right but when I washed the fleece it made a huge sticky mess!

So long story short- I don't really like the sticky velcro

velcro note: I had the sticky side down in the tent and the not sticky side sewn to fleece, if only I could find an adhesive that would hold the idea is a terrific one, but so far- NO LUCK! ah well... its pulled up twice now! hot glue was the last failure.. prior to that I found a glue desiged for holding fabric and acrylic material together.... that failed too!

I bought it on ebay! Its a plastic pot, so cutting the hole is simple enough. And it appears that a fleece "cover" is sewn and put on. I just put it in the babies cage tonight, so I'll check back in a few days and let you know if the fleece moves or not.

I'm glad to hear the pot was plastic. I remember talking to somebody awhile ago about using the short dish that goes under a flower pot for dishes and I was warned that terra cotta can contain lead. So I wouldn't use anything ceramic and especially not terra cotta.

What is terra cotta? I thought that was a color... LOL Wow, that sounded stupid. hahahahaha (Atleast I can laugh at myself).

I use ceramic dishes in the cage and everything seems to be okay....

The fuzzy ones love their plastic fleece covered inverted flower pot bed. Even though it is sitting on the bottom of their cage, they are sleeping in it instead of the hanging pouches they were using. Go figure. After all the trouble I've gone to making the entire top third of the cage "glider friendly". Silly me. I guess I'm truly a glider slave too.

My spoiled gliders, it wasn't enough to buy them toys now I'm making toys. Only I'm going so overboard I'll have to be selling toys - web site coming soon!

Terra cotta is the type of clay/material. Not sure what the best technical term is here but that is the actual stuff the pot is made out of. I believe there is a color called Terra cotta but I think it's named after the pots?

I *hate* touching terra cotta pots- they give me the creeps! EW! I'd compare it to someone scratching their nails on a chalkboard

Since you thought it was a color- I'm assuming you were thinking of the right one, kinda orangish brown. As far as I know all pots that are that color and are breakable are terra cotta! In Mexico and probably lots of other places they have terra cotta roofs on their houses... I don't know why though.

Ok that is enough for one lesson on terra cotta! Hopefully I know what I'm talking about

I know what you mean about the way the pots feel. I feel the same way about popcicle sticks or the little wooden spoons that used to come with dixie cups of icecream. ewww.

I think the reason they use terra-cotta for roof shingles is because the material is localy available. That may be why some contains lead. Actually any unglazed ceramic probably shouldn't be used.

The plastic pot sounds like something they would definately have fun with. Especially covered in fleece. My babies love fleece. I'd love to see a pic of the fleece covered pot.
