bonding pouch question #58168

I'm sure this has been asked before, but I'm not having any luck finding it.

I'm wondering about the logistics of taking gliders out of the house in their pouch for longer periods of time. Specifically, taking them to work. I've heard people mention that they've done this, but how does it work out, exactly? Where/when to the little guys go to the bathroom? What if they get hungry? Do you keep them in the pouch all day or do you bring a travel cage to let them out if they want?

I'd love to bond as well as possible with my new gliders (getting them this Sunday!), so I'd hate to lose the opportunity to bond during the day. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

For the first few days your gliders are at home (I usually let'em settle in for a week or so some do it less) I would leave them home and let them settle into home life before talking them out with you.

If you take them to work, bring along some watery fruits (melons, grapes, orange etc) and offer it to them periodically thru the day.

They will either not go potty until you get home (none of my 4 ever go pee or poo in their pouches and most times they are alseep the whole time anyway) or they will go right in there, and so long as it isn't really wet and there's room for them to move away from it they'll be ok until you get home. OR you can bring another bonding pouch and offer that to them if they go pee in there (only in a SAFE place though!!!!!!) I did that for the first bit until my guys stopped going potty in their pouches.

Also make sure it's ok with your boss, that you bring them in, you dont want to upset anyone in your workplace.

Most gliders will sleep right thru a normal day but I don't keep mine in a pouch usually any longer than 8 or 9 hours, they tend to get fidgety and want out.

Good luck, congrats on your new suggies and welcome to GC!

Welcome to GC!

I sometimes carry my girls around all day in their bonding pouch too. As Amanda said, just offer them a grape or something during the day in case they get thirsty.

Mine never pee or poo in their pouches either, but as soon as you take one out to show it to a friend... watch out!

Good luck with your new friends! I hope to see you around the board as you continue to research and learn more about them. I've been a regular here for over a year, but I'm still learning new things all the time.

Why does my little Taz refuse to stay in the bonding pouch? Is the fact that it is the color red or the material?

When I put him in the pouch he freaks out and starts biting it and scratching at it. He refuses to stop screaming. I tried everyday now for a week and he seems happier in his cage.

Is there a possibly that he prefers to be in his cage?

Maybe try a different pouch made of different material? Hmm I dunno.
I take Suki with me to class (she's quieter), and both Suki and Gabby with me on errands. I bring a ziploc baggie with treats, fruit, and a folded up paper towel just in case they make a little mess. I always bring a water bottle and pour some into the cap to offer water periodically. They won't mind going around with you during the day, they'll just sleep. And I like having Suki with me at class so I can pet her when I'm bored.

I will try once I get a new one. I can however get him to run up my arm and then sit on my shoulder for a few quick seconds but not often.

How does this sound:
I bring a travel cage and have that in my office for when I'm teaching class (total of 3 hours in a week) or in a meeting (about the same). The rest of the time I'm just working at my desk, so the pouch can be on me that whole time. If they get restless, back to the cage. That will hopefully help with the potty issues, too.

I let my new smaller critters stay at home and get used to their surroundings and make sure they are eating and drinking well before I take them out anywhere (except for maybe a vet visit.) This normally takes 3-7 days.

I have been taking my gliders to work with me in a travel cage on and off, they seem to enjoy it, and sleep through out most of it. They are not fully tame yet so they either sleep in their cage or the bonding pouch.

Cheers!

sounds like a good plan to me! I bring my little guy to class with me but I am only on campus for about an hour. Then we go home and I put him in his cage. He usually has a snack, some water and goes back to bed. Then we go to work so he is in his pouch for about nine hours. He only gets fidgety at the end of the night when it's time to go home. I work till 11-12 at night. He doesn't usually go potty in his pouch unless he has to go real bad, this in when he gets grumpy but not usually. I give him treats also. I am very luck to be able to bring him to work with me, I work in a group home so I basically assist the residents and do house work. It's like being at home for him. We also go shopping and do anything you could imagine, no problems.

biodoc, your plan sounds great! But you could probably keep them in the bonding pouch the entire time too while you are teaching. The travel cage is an awesome idea!

Thanks for all the replies. I ordered my new smaller bonding pouch and it should be arriving this weekend or next week. The one I have is very cute an snuggly, but pink icecream pattern isn't really "worky" if you know what I mean.
Plus it will be nice to have a pouch where I don't have to reach half my forearm in to reach the gliders. It makes for awkward angles. _Perfect_ for wearing around doing errands, though.
