I get this call from my Mom last night and she's crying. She says that she was visiting a friend, and all of a sudden, they saw police lights outside of the window. They both live in quiet, safe neighborhoods so it was highly unusualm and they decide to be nosy and look. She tells me that she saw 3 sheriff's vehicles, one of them being a K-9 unit. Then she saw the officer with his dog (a beautiful German Shepherd) walking towards his patrol car. She said that he called out a command to the dog and the dog didn't listen, so HE KICKED THE DOG IN THE RIBS. While the dog didn't whimper or cry out, he did sit and put his ears and head down. My Mom called the watch commander to complain and when he called her back, he said that he would have a talk with the officer, but did not admit that the guy did anything wrong or even sound like he thought the guy did something wrong. My Mom was so upset that she said she was going to call the SPCA and report it as well as file a complaint. I just don't understand. These dogs are trained extremely well. If there is a dog that is having an issue, the officer is instructed to take it back to the trainer. It's so sad.

That's so terrible! Really makes me want to hunt that guy down! GRRR! *tries to settle down* Just last year, I was visiting my ex and we drove past an animal control center and outside there were 3 guys dragging a very unhealthy looking dog into the building, and when the dog wouldn't move, 2 of the guys started kicking it. I used my cell phone to call the police right away. I didn't get to stay until the police arrived due to the fact that my ex and I were in a rush due to another unfortunate event, so I told them to give me an update on what happened. The police dropped by my house a few days later and asked me some questions about what I saw, but they never told me anything and I never heard back from them about what happened later on. I can't believe some people..

Sickening. How arrogant can a person be and live with themselves? And do you actually expect to get the response you want after you kick him/her??? How can you SEE a living creature treated like that, let alone do it yourself??? Too bad you didn't have anything handy to record that - would have made a great clip on the evening news and youtube, and then they would HAVE to be accountable for the behavior.

I sympatize with you and for the K9, but unfortunatly this could be one of those situations that could very well cause you a lot of problems. It has happened here locally and all of sudden the complaintant and his family got an extensive amount of speeding & various other traffic violations & even home sanitation citations. Not fair I know but it happens.

on the way to my honeymoon we flew into the tiny airport on the island of St. Croix. I was watching out the window as the baggage loader people took luggage off the plane.
One guy pulled out a small kennel (either a cat or a very small dog)....looked in the kennel...then SHOOK IT. He and the other guy laughed as he did it.
I was so upset...but didn't say anything... to this day I think about that, and regret not saying something.

I work in Law Enforcement and can assure you that behavior is unacceptable! If you do not feel like the Watch Commander is taking your complaint seriously, go above his head!! If it is a City Police Department, ask to speak to the Chief or Assistant Chief...if it's a Sheriff's office, ask to speak to the Sheriff or the local County Commissioner.

I remember hearing about a video in which an officer hung his dog and beat it on his porch. Another officer had driven by and caught it on his phone while his partner had stopped the guy and arrested him. I'm not sure of the outcome, but I know that the jerk hitting the dog was suspended and faced prosecution because a K-9 officer is the equivalent to a human officer. Anyways, my Mom ended up calling animal control and the supervisor of the watch commander. We'll see where that goes.
Daron~ That was one of my fears, too. Once my Mom gets something in her head, you can't change her mind. I admire her courage, but hope there is no reprimand. I think the dog deserves a voice, though. There have been times where I have seen things and haven't spoken up (nothing extremely serious) and have regretted it.

I fully understand! My profile says Indianapolis IN, but actually it is a small city 10-15 miles outside Indianapolis. The County has a fairly small force & the Good-Ol-Boy factor goes a long way if you know what I mean. It isnt much of a factor now that Im an adult & a sales proffessional, but I gotta tell ya, it wasnt fun as I came up through the school system all the way til I graduated High School.
