I am applying to be a usda lic breeder and was wondering if the people that have already done so can tell me a bit about what will happen? I know my cages are big enough and my suggies are on the exotic glider diet and have plenty of toys and love but aside from that i know there are other things they consider. I was a state lic childcare provider so i know this kind of stuff can br strict.

wave Melissa, I'm not familiar with the process, so I can't be of any help. Hopefully someone will be along who has had experience in this area.
Good Luck!

Thanks a bunch linda. with dealing with the state for childcare i know there is little things that you would not think about to look at. They give you a thick book to go thru your house and do what you have to do and im not sure if USDA does as well befor there visit.

Thanks for pulling that up Elizabeth, I would have been way too lazy, LOL. I think I pretty much listed everything that I went through in that thread. Hope it helps.

What is the vet inspection thing about? My gliders have not been to the vet yet as i have gotten all but one from reputable breeders and they are healthy. I do have a vet on hand incase though. Is this going to matter?

yes, you have to have the vet come out and inspect your gliders and their housing

Do i just call my reg vet to do this? I keep records on my gliders just have not had to "take" them to the vet yet. I am calling tomarrow to get my packet and from what i am seeing it looks like ill have a wait and plenty of time to make everything ok. I already keep records and have a cupboard for there food and all but one cage is off the floor. the other one is on wheels. I do need to go thru and lable a few things. My floors is the locking laminant that looks like real wood so no prob there.

Now on them wanting to check the gliders is cool but i have one that i have worked very hard on taming and she is great with me but will not let others touch her that she does not know. what if she bites the person?

Good Luck Cindy! I applied online in December, they called me in January and basically told me I'll be lucky if I get it by September shock

I don't know about whether your regular vet does it or what exactly they look for because I'm still waiting on my info smile

It took me MONTHS to get my packet also. I say just keep calling and emailing them. Overall, it took me over a year to actually get licensed.

Melissa, you will need your reg. vet to come and do a home inspection. She will need to fill out a few forms that come with your packet and just take a look at your gliders and make sure they are all healthy.

Make sure that all your food, treats, medicine is labled and not expired. Make sure that none of that stuff is stored near cleaning products or stuff like that.

Make sure you have a record of all the gliders you have purchased with the breeders name, address, phone number, and USDA number if they have one. Also keep detailed records of any joeys sold and how much you sell them for.

As for the vet and inspector wanting to look at an untamed glider. For the vet she will probably just want to look at her and make sure she is healthy. The inspector will probably just want you to take her out in the cage so he can look at her. Some inspectors don't ask to see all the gliders. My inspector only looked at half of them and decided they were all happy and healthy, I really did want to show him ALL of them though, lol.

It's really not as big of a deal as it seems. These inspectors see the mills houses and they still get licensed. When they walk into a small breeders house that actually cares about thier animals, they are very happy. My inspector was almost in tears over my set up. He had seen so much bad and said that he wished everyone would care for thier animals the way that I do. I think we all wish it worked that way though.

Don't stress over it. Just wait for your packed. When you get our packed then make the vet appointment. Once the vet has came and filled out the papers, then send the packet in. Then you get to wait for them to call and set up an appointment for your inspection which can take a few more months, lol. Once you have your inspection then you SHOULD receive your license in 2 weeks, but mine took over 2 months to finally arrive at my house.

I was just approved 2 weeks ago. After you send in all your paper work and $10.00 they then mail all your paper work back to you They then call and schedule an appointment to come and visit you. The inspector just came in looked around. Made sure my cages were labeled and said I passed with flying colors. He didn`t even want to see a glider. It took him longer to finish his paper work then it did to inspect my glider room. He handed me more papers to fill out when I accquire or sell gliders and then wanted another check. That was it. I`ll get my official licence in about 4 to 6 weeks. A vet only has to come and inspect once a year. The rest is glider inventory stuff. He did say that he will do spot checks every 4 to 6 months. That was it.
Good Luck

From experience, make sure you have records of all of your gliders and keep any and all health records. My USDA inspector looked for notes and records on each glider. I used to keep a large binder, but I now keep it all on a computer program. Also, make sure you have an emergency vet name and number. My USDA inspector asked for that as well as my regular vet. Dr. Doris Hackworth does most if not all of VA and she's great. I hope you have as good of an experience as I do:-) Good Luck!
