HI GC!!
I am putting up another post! HAHA! I just love asking a ton of questions!! Anyhoo, My boyfriend and I were talking about ideas for cages. We are moving into a house in a couple of months and the ideas that I came up with he said sounded like a huge entertainment center. He came up with an idea of cage that is built into the corner of a room. It will be four feet deep and about 5 feet at its widest and as tall as the ceiling (8ft).
I thought it was a good idea. All except for the fact that the walls would be right there. Do you see this being a problem? Any input would be awesome!!! Thanks in advance.

What would you be making the cage out of? I have seen A LOT of cages that are one half of a room and things all over the walls. As long as you don't care that your walls may be ruined, then now. I would try to cover the wall as much as possible so they do not lick the paint or paint chips and they eat it. I will try to find some pictures for you of some cool cages that are literally a part of a room. :o) sounds like a great idea and I'm sure your gliders will love the room!

Talk to Peggy, the moderator SRLB. She has some huge corner cages.

I am glad that you like the idea. And thanks for the reply. I was actually thinking of covering the walls with those picture/backdrops that you can buy for like lizard aquariums and stuff. You know what I am talking about? They have pictures of like a rainforest or a waterfall or something. Getting really large ones of trees and getting them laminated so that if they urinate on them I can just take them down and clean them, then put them back up. Just so they feel like they are back in nature. Then hang some vines and stuff all around, etc. what do you think?? Good idea?

Go to my home, and then to send private message. Type in SRLB in the to box and go from there, just like e-mail.

I know now I can't wait to get them!!! YEAH!! I am so excited! I have been waiting for a year!!! I wanted to be really really sure I was making a good decision!! There are so many sad stories of people giving theirs away because they didn't realize what a responsibilty they were.
I did NOT want to do that at all!! So i took my time and did tons and tons of research!! Then I joined this last week and it is better than any book I could have bought!!! I LOVE GC!!!!
Thanks again!! Lindsay G

This is similar to my glider situation, except you've been waiting for a long longer than I have. Ever since I've joined GC I've learned so much about gliders, and it just confirmed that I was going to get one. ^_^ Good luck on your cage! It sounds like an awesome idea. If you end up doing it, I'd love to see pictures. ^-^

Instead of getting the backdrop cloth and laminating them, See if you can find a plastic shower curtain with the forest them or something simular, That would be alot cheaper and not to mention alot easier to clean, just hang in the shower or outside and hose away....

The size of the cage you described sounds very awesome! However, let's be realistic. Sorry this is off topic, but I have been wondering....how are you going to clean the cage when it is five feet wide, four feet deep and eight feet high? The gliders' urine and food thrown out are very likely going to get between the walls and the cage and will eventually pile up, thus it will invite fruit flies and whatnot. Also, if your glider escapes and gets behind the cage, between the cage and the wall, then how are you going to get the glider to come out? They may decide to stay there for a while and it can get frustrating. Sorry to rain on your parade, but this is something to think about from a different perspective. Jen

While the size sounds great I agree with Jen/PixTrix… Cleaning is an issues to think of – I built my first cage… and it went horribly wrong… did not treat the wood properly… did not plan for the droppings properly …

It sounds like a great idea. I think it has potential to look really nice. My only concern would be that it is agains the wall. You could get something to put between teh wall and the cage, but if you dont I can promise they will spit food all over the wall! If the cage is movable you could clean it daily, but that will be a pain. I would try to find something to put between teh cage and the wall.

I have my cages built so that the walls of the room are part of the cage. I have washable semi gloss paint on the walls and use a steam cleaner to clean the rest of the cage. I used the plastic hardware cloth from Home Depot and a wood frame (pine with 5 coats of polyurithane). In one cage, I built a frame that I put more hardware cloth on so the gliders can climb on the back wall and to give me more places to hang things. SRLB used the heavy weight pet screen on her cages instead of the plastic hardware cloth. Keep in mind, if you end up with gliders that chew, both of these can pose an escape potential. Make sure you properly coat the wood (don't use cedar or redwood!) to prevent 1)urine from soaking in and making it stink, and 2) to seal it so the oils from the pine don't make your gliders ill. I also used some vinal flooring on the bottom of the cage. Easy to wipe clean.
The way I have the cage built, it is 3 foot deep, 8 foot wide and 7 foot tall but has a divider so that it is actually two cages (one side is bigger then the other). It works GREAT and the gliders LOVE all the room to bounce around in!

That is the idea I was going towards. The walls were actually part of the cage. The pictures I was going to put up were to (1) protect the walls, (2) make clean up easier, I can just take them down and take them outside to hose it off and (3) to give them a nature-like environment.
That is a really good idea with the semi-gloss paint. I will probably do that under the pictures if that is my final plan. What do you think will be a good thing to put over the pictures so that they can climb on it?? I was thinking of some type of cage mesh? Any better ideas??

No rain on this parade, that is why I asked you guys. You know way better than I do and I wanted to see what everyone thought. Thanks for bringing that to my attention. I didn't even think about it!!

we have a larger then most cage and are planning on eventually doubling its size+ - I can reach the entire thing from the doors, (note- not from a door!) and steam clean it... and its light enough to pull away from the wall to change the cloth behind and under it. I lift each leg to change the cloth underneath it!
