OK....so were building a cage. We plan on doing a wood frame and have read enough info. on coating it well and such. It's the wire I am stll not sure about.
Is vinyl coated the same as PVC coated? Is the vinyl/PVC coated stuff galvanized underneath? If it is and you end up with a chewer..wouldn't they eventually chew right through the coating and expose the galvanized wire? Then your whole cage is garbage. I also read the plex-glass cage post. What does everyone think about that idea? I really don't want to do this twice. Marsi is in a temporary (too small for too long) cage. I would like to begin building as soon as possible. I ordered a slide out tray from Martins Cages to begin with. Figured we'd get that to build around instead of trying to find a tray to fit the cage we build. DUH!
Thanks.

First of all, welcome to GC!

Vinyl coated wire is a much thinner wire than the pvc coated wire. However, pvc coated wire is much more suitable and highly recommended for building cages. When using pvc coated wire, a wood frame is not necessary, as the wire is very sturdy. The pvc coated wire can be ordered through www.klubertanz.com and ask for Richard. Keep in mind that the bar spacings should be no bigger than 1/2" by 1", otherwise gliders would escape.

As for the plexiglass cage, it is used by a very small percentage of glider owners. Many of us use pvc coated wire or vinyl coated wire. If you want to build a good cage that lasts a good long time, then the pvc coated wire is the way to go. I have built cages with the pvc coated wire from Klubertanz and I am very happy with it. I planned the cages around the pull-out tray and built them from there. It is the only logical thing to do.

If you decide to use a wood frame and vinyl coated wire, then I recommend you apply several coats of polyurethane on the wood to prevent the wood from absorbing the urine, which will make the wood really stink.

Hope this helps.

Jen

Looking around on the net including Klubertanz it seems as though they list their wire mesh as PVC(vinyl) coated. As if they are the same thing.
And what about the chewing through the coating? Thanks for your info

the vinyl wire we have seems fine even with chewers so far, but the way we designed the cage it wouldn't be too horrible to replace a section of it if the girls did chew through.. so far by offering plenty of other things to be chewed on they don't seem to chew on the cage itself that much.. they are much more intent on peeing and shitting on the sides of the cage itself!

ha ha ha. I love an honest person.
That is why I'm pondering the plexiglass cage idea. Can't [censored] or pee through that onto the wall. And you can just wipe it off the side of the cage in between major cleanings. I don't know. Plexi is sounding like more and more of a good idea to me. Nobody seems to be trying to deter me from it so far. More pondering to do yet.........

I love our cage and the walls stay clean- but I keep those sides of the cage covered on the outside with polar fleece and just wash the panels I made..... and the stem cleaner makes quick work of actually cleaning the cage itself too...

In all honesty, I would not use the plexiglass for a cage, because gliders love to climb, romp, jump from one side to the other side of the cage. How can they do that in a plexiglass cage? Gliders love to hang upside down on the pvc coated wire to eat or to just hang out. Gliders cannot do that on plexiglass.

I have seen some gliders for sale at pet stores and they were housed in an aquarium type of setting with lots of branches at the base. I felt bad for those gliders because all four sides of their home did not offer anything to hold onto, namely the pvc coated wire. That type of setting looked kind of boring and very sad to me.

Have you considered looking into reptariums? The reptarium shell can easily be removed from its frame and thrown into a washer and hung to dry. Many of us use reptariums both as permanent housing and as travel cages.

I am just giving you my insights to the pros and cons of the plexiglass. I would not use it for my gliders.

I appreciate it. No reptariums. Thay are fine for traveling but I would like something that looks a little nicer than that. Please.......no offense to anyone! I spoke to my boyfriend when he got home and he does not like the plexi idea either. So that's it. PVC/Vinyl coated it is. That wasn't so hard. Hopefully we will begin work on the cage this weekend. Wood framing and probably the green colored mesh. I'm thinking it'll look cool with Marsi's CAMO. fleece accesories. I will post pics in Housing when we're done. THANK YOU everyone for all your advise.
