My husband had chosen three diffrent places to go after he got back from Iraq, One (Alaska; which i will have to sell my babies if we go) the second (Hawaii) and the third Washington.

IF you know anything about the legality of Hawaii I would love to know just in case we get stationed there. I don't want to loose my babys and so far im rooting for washington because Alaska needs alot of permits for them and i just don't know about hawaii.

thanks for help!

Oh i just read that I could take them to some parts of Hawaii, but they would be quarinteened for a little bit before i could take them home. Or has that changed, i was looking through the past messages just to see if someone else was in the same boat. I know some parts of the mainland are illegal but not all, i dont think.

Try to contact the Game Warden on whichever Island you happen to be going to. My guess would be you are going to Pearl Harbour? That's on the Island of Oahu.

Here's a link to a story from 2005, not very promising...
http://www.hawaiiag.org/hdoa/newsrelease/05-23.htm

but it does list contact info to email Animal Quarantine; I'm sure they can tell you if the laws have changed...

I still believe they are illegal because gliders could actually survive outdoors in their enviroment and they believe they could cause damage to the ecosystem there and harm native species of insects and other animals

They are illegal in all parts of Hawaii and Alaska. I have talked with both states vets from the Dept of Fish and Game and both said any illegal animal would be taken and euthanized. Hawaii I understand since sugar gliders could colonize but the vet in Alaska was a little uneducated! He stated that "rodents are not allowed as pets". I explained that a sugar glider is a marsupial not a rodent and that sugar gliders do not carry rabies and could not possibly survive in Alaska. He went on to tell me that a sugar glider was a rodent capable of producing disease...gotta wonder where he went for his DVM!
My husband has orders for Alaska but is going to take a cut in bonus so we can get duty station of choice to go somewhere we can take the furbutts (I think he knows I won't leave them!). I don't know if your husband is Airforce or Army but WA state is beautiful and gliders are legal!!!! Good luck, he is in my prayers for a safe return!

Also, keep in mind...even if they are allowed with a quarantine, quarantine would be *EXTREMELY* stressful for gliders, depending on how they do the quarantine.

If they took my gliders away for a week or something to quarantine them, I can only imagine that they'd pretty much stop eating and tear their hair out for a week and be a mess by the time quarantine was over. Maybe that's not how they do quarantine, but that was my impression on how it worked. That is really a procedure that would be incredibly stressful for an animal like a sugar glider.

Quarantine for Hawaii is long too. Because they don't have a lot of things the mainland does (and don't want it).

I believe quanrantine for any animal entering Hawaii is 6 months....that is a LONG time. We have friends who looked into it but did not want to "give up" the cats and dog for that long. If gliders are not legal, they will not be allowed in period.

My son is in the Army stationed at Schofield Army Base in Hawaii. I had him check for me. Gliders ARE illegal in Hawaii.

Judge not until you have walked in their shoes and lived their lives. What you see online is only part of the story.

Gliders in Hawaii are illegal and will be destroyed. Hawii is very protective of it's environment.

I am a native to Hawaii and living in Tuscany for now. I guess due to the strict restriction on these animals I will not be moving back. Without my little boys...I could not think of it. heart

Here is the response from Dept of Ag in Hawaii....which was sent to me August 22, 2008.

Sugar gliders are illegal to transport or possess in Hawaii. We hope that you will be able to find good homes for them elsewhere should you make the move to Hawaii.
