Ok I think I have provided my furbutt with everything she needs...

She has a HUGE cage... a bazillion toys... an awesome diet... 3-4 hours of tent time a day... more "ME" time than hubby, the kids and my grandson (trust me they remind me all the time! LOL)...

Yet the brief time she spends in her cage (poor thing, I do sleep once in awhile!) she insists on picking, chewing, ?eating? (I haven't confirmed this one for sure yet) her bedding...no matter what I use!

Now my concern is that eating thing, is anything safe?

I guess I should add what I've used...Aspen shavings...CareFresh...paper towels...newspaper, but only once 'cuz that freaked me more than anything when I found it pulled up through the cage!

I remembered reading once about putting fleece down, and changing it daily...this is where it just floors me...

If the fleece is on the bottom of the cage she refuses to be "on" it. She loves her fleece toys and blankies, but doesn't want to walk on it! Now if I put it under the cage in the tray, she'll pull at it, bite at it, whatever at it! LOL

Lately I use nothing, and just clean it twice a day...which is not only a bit of a pain, but just downright nasty if you ask me. It looks yukky!

I need all of your sagely advice!

the only thing i suggest is that sometimes when they need something nutritionally they will eat their shavings.kind of like dogs and cats will eat grass. We know its not too good for them though.
You said she is on a awesome diet...what is she eating??(you don't have to answer if you don't want too...)
is she eating everything she needs to be is my point.I am sure you are feeding her properly but herself, shemaybe picky and not eating like she should.
i don't know-that was just a suggestion.

Our cages don't have the slide outs close enough for them to reach. Can you drop the bottom tray down some?

No problem Barbara, I appreciate any suggestions...

I don't mind divulging what she eats either! LOL

She's on the BML diet... gets a variety of fresh fruits and veggies, she would only eat the corn in the frozen veggies, but I make sure the ratio is correct... she gets mealies, she'd get rid of me if she didn't! LOL

She gets lickie treats, but not too much...I use yogurt and applesauce.

I hope that helps, and I hope I didn't forget anything! LOL

Badgersmommy...I've been trying to figure something like that out.

I have tried taking out the tray, raising the cage up over the tray, but I haven't figured anything sturdy enough that I'm comfortable with yet.

She gets to going on her wheel and I'm afraid she'll tip the cage over!

Could you take the tray out, put papertowels down and the just put the whole cage on it? That way it is dropping down and landing on the papertowels, but she can't reach them, then to clean, you move the cage and replace the towels. Hummm, I don't know.

Maybe if you took a picture of the bottom of the cage we would better know how to help you.

I use those puppy training pads. Sort of like a large kotex. (sorry, but that is the best way to describe it)

Alicia, thank you! You gave me an idea!

Better yet...It worked!

I couldn't take a picture right now, the camera fritzed out about a week after the computer did! LOL Murphy's Law around here lately! I now have my daughter and her camera phone do it for me...but alas she's a teen, and it IS Saturday night! LOL

Anyway, it's your average HUGE bird cage. When I went to do as you suggested, it dawned on me I could take the wire bottom, raise it up to the bottom of the wire sides and zip tie it to them (hope that made sense! LOL). It's a "suspended" floor of sorts now but with more zip ties I think it will be stable enough not to bother her (she refused to go in and check it out! LOL). She did loose about 2-inches, but it's 5-ft tall, so I think thats ok... (why do I try that thinking thing?????)

Now, if she can reach her little "arm" the 3+ inches to the bedding now...sheesh!

Thank you all so much for the ideas!

I think they have streth arms sometimes, like that super hero. Gosh forbid a mealie falls down the grate, mine will lay on the belly and S**T**R**E**T**C**H to get it. Glad you found something that works, and yes, zip ties should be fine. I use zip ties for everything. Men have duck tape, we woman have zip ties

I'll answer it in the morning, and get my order placed too!

Thanks again for everything!

alicia,

your tip worked wonders for me. i was cleaning out one of my cages, twice a day because theyd EAT the newspaper or paper towels i had laid down. After she started picking at the puppy pads i decided to use, i thought.."enough is enough."

and yes, zip ties are a womans best friend tounge

I left puppy pads off the list, but yes I had tried those also.

Same thing here sugarsnacks...picks, and so I've now discovered, eats it all.

Unfortunately after I re-inspected the change I'd made, I decided I didn't feel comfortable with it. When I raised the wire bottom it left more room around the edges. The perimeter that the bottom sits on is smaller than the perimeter of the cage itself (sits on a recessed lip…if that explains it better?).

Being a paranoid mommy with everything Mirrhi's been through, I was worried she could get caught on the wire ends of the bottom since there was now additional space around it.

I went ahead and put the tray back where it was, and will just clean the bottom tray several times a day for now…although it still looks yukky to me! LOL

The bonus for Mirrhi and I is I’ve decided to just get a new cage!!! I’m excited, and am now armed with a list of wants vs. don’t wants!

Thank you to everyone for their ideas. Now I’m sure I’ll be searching all of the cage idea threads…I love excuses to spend more time here!
