Sorry mods if this was posted in the wrong area...not sure where it should go.
So, recently I saw a glider with a small white streak right across her face stripe, some on her forehead, and a streak across the stripe on the back of her neck. This got me wondering if it's a sign of inbreeding because a friend of mine told me that if a dog has black nails, sometimes they'll have white streaks in them which means they are inbred. (He had a Dachsaund with it come in so he showed me)
I have no real knowledge of this glider's lineage besides who their parents were which doesn't help much either...and when I mentioned it to Hollis, she said that she has a glider who she got from a pet store and her glider has some white streaks in her stripe too. Both of these gliders are grey females.
So, what does everyone think? Is it "normal" for some to have white streaks in their stripe?

I am assuming you don't have a pic of the glider you saw but Hollis has one similar? Hollis, I would love to see a pic to see exactly what you are talking about...
Yeah, I don't have a good pic but I can try to see if I can get one. I managed to get a couple but they're kinda fuzzy. :S
It's just weird because the one I've seens white streaks stick out nicely...it looks like it was almost painted on them but it isn't. At first I thought I was seeing things but Iiii dunno.

Although with other gliders white markings sometimes show up if they have mosaic lineages, right?
I have been thinking the same thing recently with short-tailed gliders and wondering if it's a sign of inbreeding. Of course it could also be caused by mom biting the tail off while the glider is a baby or other trauma...but I saw this post on CL of these poor little gliders with no ears and short tails...and since they BOTH have short tails I started to wonder if perhaps it was a genetic defect, possibly due to inbreeding...?
I just emailed them and asked them to remove the wheel and to consider new bedding and why, also invited them here...maybe they will post an ad and find a good home with a fellow GC-er.
Ouch! That looked like it was painful to have their ear bitten off but it's...kinda cute looking... =X
Blah...my lighting was bright but isn't bright enough to get a pic of it and I don't want to scare her even if she is brave with bright lights. (She got lotsa yogies and kisses on the head as compensation for bothering her though!) But, having a bright light helped show it to me more. She's actually got a white streak across the stripe between her eyes, a large-ish off-white dot on her forehead, and a small white dot on the back of her neck. I thought the back of the neck was a streak but it turns out, it's a dot. You really can't miss it when you see her in person but in pics, it's so hard to take a pic of because it's skinny/small. And then I noticed she has random silvery hairs all throughout her stripe too so maybe it's just her coloring.
It just seems odd to me though since she's a standard grey (has a black stripe, medium grey body, and a creamy grey/brown head) or at least that's what I'm assuming she is even if she came from 2 Champs. I know where 2 good pics that show it are but...meh.

It might not have been bitte off, they might have been born with the deformity, which would lead to suspected inbreeding.
I have a girl missing part of her ear, her mate bit it. This was before I got her and him, they are still together but he is neutered now and they get along much better. I bet it did hurt though losing part of her ear. Poor baby.
*Just to clarify - I wasn't the one who bought the glider from the pet store. Someone else did and then I adopted her. LOL
I have a good picture of it on my phone, but no way to get it onto my computer (my digital camera won't take a good enough picture for that). I could send it to someone through their cell phone and they could post it from there, if anyone is able to do that.

That's weird. 0.o Looks like Razzle has a little triangle streak. That's a nice pic too.
You can kinda see it in this pic but you have to look closely...you can see the dot on her forehead and you can kinda see the one on the back of her neck but you have to look closely...same with the white streak in the stripe between her eyes. They aren't bald spots either or new fur coming in...
Like I told Nicole, Razzle originally came from a pet store. I don't know anything other than that (whether she was bred at the store or by a private breeder, or by a mill) so it's very possible that she is inbred. I have no idea.

I am curious to see what others say about the white streaks.
my gliders (both have normal tails) always give birth to short tailed gliders. they are not inbred. I have their lineage. They are not bitten off, because they are excellent parents and EVERY baby has the exact same tail length. no in breeding at all.

Wait, what? Sorry to be off-topic but I've NEVER heard of "white streaks in a dog's toenails indicate inbreeding".. my dog has bi-colored nails, but I don't know her lineage so I can't say if she's inbred, but that sounds sketchy.. o.o;
I would think that pug-nosed gliders in particular are inbred or come from inbred lines. It can't be healthy, per say, so I wouldn't recommend breeding for it (poor pugs themselves have such terrible respiratory problems) even if it's cute. Could these traits just be mutations, or perhaps in/linebreeding from further back in the genetics?

I have been in animal rescue for many years. More than half my life and I am OLD! lol That is not nessisarily a sign of inbreeding. Many dogs, even the purebreed ones, have the same streaks thru thier nails. Doesn't mean that the dachshund wasn't inbred just means that looking at the nails is not a true sign of inbreeding.
As far as the suggies stripe...I would think that was somewhere in it's lineage. Makes the suggie special that's for sure!

Ok, maybe I'm blind, but I don't see the white streaks. :\ Can someone point them out to me?
It's very light in the pic but it looks like a V. It's on each side of the black stripe going down the middle. I see a little "paw" mark in the black stripe. Or is that just me?

Oh...I was told that it meant they were. Guess not though.
Yeah, Razzle has one near her forehead. The one I saw isn't due to balding...there's fur there. You can even hold the white hairs between your fingers...and she's had it for over 9months too. That's weird though if it's just in her lineage. Yay for a special sug! I wonder if their babies have a white streak too...

Peggy's got a pug nose glider (Dasher)...I'm almost positive that he came from well tracked lineage, with no inbreeding (though I'll have to wait for her to break herself away from the SGGA to find out). Dasher's perfectly healthy, never had any issues, & has gone on to sire perfect joeys.

Awww maaaaan. Peggy is at the SGGA? (Then again...why wouldn't she be?) I'd like to hear what she thinks about this since she knows a lot about different animals and other stuff too. o.0

I've circled the spot we're talking about in this attachment. It is much more noticeable in person, but you can kind of get the idea.
OIC! Thanks!
Actually, markings like that are fairly common on alot of WF gliders and I'm sure there are non-WFs that have them too. One of mine has 2 of those marks on her head. You can kinda see them in this pic:

Ooo. Hers are cute though. Then again, she's a cute girl anyway.
So it's normal for some to have em then? That's good and neat then. ^^ Special edition sugs, unite! j/k.
I've never seen it in a classic gray glider, just in WFs, so maybe whatever is causing the white marks in that female comes from something else. The white marks in the WFs seem to have originated from a specific line of gliders.
