I just had the most horrible thought-what would I do with my babies in a fire? (I know, I spend too much time alone). I have 9 cages, and a couple of them are pretty big, at least 5 feet tall. They can't go through the window. Now, my glider room is between the front door and the back door, if I can't use one, I'll use the other and drag all the cages out. But has anyone else made a fire escape plan for their suggies?
Food for thought.

I live in a one story house.my glider cages are right together. i could (with the exclusion of one larger cage get them out the window if i couldnot make it out the front or back door.
other than that-i havenot thought of a real escape plan...I havelots of animals so that would be tough!!I guess id get the loose ones (my chihuahua and cat) and my hubby would be grabbing cages.

I am thinking of moving the travel cages into the glider room for the two big cages. That way I can grab gliders and go. All of the others will fit out the windows.

I have thought about it and made plans. i have an extra travel cage in my shed. I would grab one pouch and Carl the other and out the nearest exit I would go.

I was thinking we'd grab pouches and go.. having lived through a fire it is in my mind.. I plan on storing one of the travel cages in their room and the other in the garage, but to be honest- even if they aren't caged I'd know they were out of the fire and could deal with them outside- buy a cheap cage at meijers for the duration or SOMETHING until something else could be done!

I also think that this is a good reminder to stash a spare bonding pouch in a few acccesible places- like the cars!

[:"green"]Very good food for thought. I would think I would grab their pouches out of the cages & make tracks out of the house ASAP. Replacement cages could be gotten later if needed. The biggest thing to remember is to get OUT! The loose pets will instinctively get out on their own if there is an open exit for them. When we had a fire-scare (furnace's fan motor went out & smoke was coming out of all the vents), my first husband was chasing the cat around the house when the firemen got there. They told him to "get out, leave the door open & the cat will follow" - sure enough, that's exactly what happened.

Hey Amie that's a good idea about keeping some pouches in the car! I have to make a bunch of pouches tonight for this colony I got (I've already used up all of the ones I have!) so maybe I'll make a few extra to stash...

I'm in an apartment & I never thought about what I would do in a fire. I guess first of all I'd hope it happened while they were sleeping so they'd be in the pouch already. I do have a reptarium & 2 explorariums on the way- so I'm covered for travel cages, except they're all going to be full here shortly!

I have more planning to do!

good luck with the colony.. and heh- gotta get back to sewing tonight after work- half a bonding pouch sitting on the table by the machine (sewed the zipper inw ithout checking it and it didn't open, so Bill fixed it after I stopped sewing last night) and 3 more cage pouches to do.. then I need to make one more double pouch for introing the 2 sets of gliders in in and get some more 7" zippers for regular bonding pouches- the littler ones I am using for the double openign pouches are too small I think for regular use- Bill won't be able to easily put his entire hand in them! I can.

While not specifically "fire" plans, I have tornado plans. I have it down to 2 minutes providing the gliders are in their pouches (sleep time). That 2 minutes is to get ALL my zoo to shelter. Living in tornado alley, this plan has been put into action many many times. The one time it was at night, took me 3 1/2 minutes to "catch all of them".

I figure in an emergency, I can grab them out of the big cage pretty quickly (most of them come to the door when I'm there anyway) and ignore any bites. Thats why the plan for the cages to go out-I am afraid of a fire at night. Not that day would be any better, but...

true- our fires have all been at night, but the girls come to us for the most part unless its right when they wake up and definitely when scared so I hope I can grab them and slide them in a pouch quick. sorry- we had an arsonist on the loose awhile back- had a tree blaze, car/house blaze and then a construction dumpster blaze during the rebuild. But at the time we thankfully had no pets. But it is something I have thought about since!

Dancing, your escape for the tornado's, is that a basement? Would it be quicker to get them outside (no stairs)? I'm just curious, I've never lived in a tornado prone area.
I swear next house is going to have an exterior door for the glider room.

Wow. I never thought of all this stuff! Guess I'd better figure some things out! My problem is that my bedroom is upstairs and my gliders and dog are downstairs. No telling where the cat would be. If I have a fire at night there's gonna be a problem for sure.

I live in a 1 bedroom 1 story apartment for now, well until May of 2006. I have travel cages, ferret front packs, and all that stuff handy and within arms distance of the cages. I also have enough small Kritter Keepers in the case of a fire or emergency and I have to stick my mouse, degu, and anoles in there...

I think I would probably just grab the pouches, zip tie them, and then throw the travel cages out the door and deal with it when I got outside. LOL

Also, I do have emergency food ready in the case I have to evacuate my apartment. I have several jars of babyfood, and a few water bottles as well as 3 small feeding bowls and a syringe in one bag and an extra medical kit in there as well.

As many of you can tell, I'm Queen of Paranoia! hehehe

Shawna, You are in the heart of tornado alley. Trust me, Austin can and does get tornados!

Anyway, my gliders are all upstairs. The "shelter" is in the basement which to get to it I have to go out the back door, open the basement door and then down into the basement. And trust me, unless there is a tornado headed my way, I do NOT go in that basement! There be spiders down there!

I'm lucky that in case of a tornado I wouldn't have to do anything since I live in a basement apartment. In case of fire, I've got travel cages nearby and would grab pouches and stuff them in them, that's assuming of course that the gliders are in their pouches. If they're loose in their cage it would be more difficult, I guess in that case I'd pray that they came to me (rather than trying to escape due to fear -strange noises & smells) and I could grab them and stuff them into the cage.

in a twister we go to the basement- either the laundry room or the bathroom- main area has windows and a sliding door... and I have their tent down there already if a pouch isn't enough room since that floor was where we did tent time... and yes they come through here regularly- not far from the house is a road thats seen them many times!

Well, I don't have a basement! What the heck do I do in a tornado? We don't have any inside rooms, either.

BTW, now that I think about it those tornados in Jasper and Jerrel that killed all those people a few years back aren't very far from here! Great! One more thing to worry over! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/roflmao.gif" alt="" />

Shawna- do you have a hallway without windows? if not- the bathtub is believe it or not the safest place during a twister! next safest is any doorway.
