I'm considering getting some sort of a heater for my gliders that I'm bringing home in November. We usually turn our heat down to 65 or so at night, and I don't want the babies to get too cold. (We keep it at about 70 during the day).
I have two questions: 1. How do I know the heater isn't making the gliders TOO hot? 2. What type of a heater is best?
Thanks in advance!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thanx.gif" alt="" />

Maybe a heat lamp would work better and an extra fleece blanket. The temp for gliders should be 70-85.

I have joeys that are using an incubator and I use a small 8x8" reptile heat pad which keeps it roughly around 85-90 degrees in there. I think that would be too warm for you adults... There are hermit crab heat pads that keep it right at 75-80 that run $14.99 but once on, cannot be removed.
Remember with heat lamps that they are made normally for reptiles or turtles and can get quite hot and therefore, may be TOO hot for gliders.
I keep my apartment at 72 degrees and I have to wear a hoodie and pj pants no matter what and I sleep in a down comforter. I say if they get used to it, then make sure you add some fleece blankets, double up on the fleece for the pouch, etc.
Make sure they are not near an a/c vent or somewhere with a draft (ie: window). 68 degrees should be okay, although on the cooler side, like I suggested, just double up on the fleece and add some blankies. It would be hard to get a heat source that is measured temperature wise since you are not keeping them in an aquarium glass tank. Since the cage has holes, it would be hard to see how hot it really is. At work, we just provide extra bedding (aspen or CareFresh) and leave a nice place for the animals to hideout in.

I use a ceramic heat lamp that I have suspended above the gliders cage. I've got it hooked up to a thermostat so it can turn on & off. I've used it for 8 years with no problems.

Do you have a model number or something? And did you have to hook it up to a thermostat yourself, or did it come with one?
Thanks, Kristy

The thermostat is a ReptiTemp 500R (Not sure who made it off hand). I bought it separate from the heat lamp and got it at the pet store when I happened to see it there one day. The lamp I use (and in 7 1/2 years I've only gone through 2) is a Repticare Ceramic Infrared Heat Emitter 150 watts. It's made by Zoo Med.

Maybe that's who made it, I really don't know any more. I looked on the thermostat and it looks like the name is pretty much worn off (it is over 6 years old after all)
