hi everyone
I have 2 gliders, boys about 4 years old,one of them got cought in the pouch and long story short he lost his arm from the elbow down on Thrursday. I am extremely upset(since I blame myself about the accident)but i wanted to tell you guys how he is healing and if someone can share some thoughts i'd appreciate it.
his surgery was thursday and the doctor said when he woke up he went right for the food!we took him home the next day and he seems happy,he started climbing and hes still super fast. For now he has a separate cage and its a small one so i try to keep him out as much as possible when i have time to watch him,i really didnt think hes gonna recover so fast, but i'm excited to see him doing well. hes on 3 different meds and he takes them with no problem.and also-i dont think hes picking his arm,it already started growig fur.
I'll post some pics soon. if anyone can help me and make some suggestions how to make his life easier and more comfortable that would be great
thank you all!!
ina

I have two "tri-pod" gliders. One had an arm amputated at the shoulder, the other came oop with half his back leg gone and already healed.

With gliders like this, they are usually only as "handicapped" as we make them. My boys don't seem to realize they are missing a limb at all. I do prefer to keep them in Reptariums or klubertantz wire cages though as they are much easier for the gliders to climb around compared to traditional flight cages with the verticle bars.

Shelves/ramps can help for them too as well as plenty of "resting" perches through out the cage atleast until he and his muscles adjust to the change.

I also had a tripod glider. My sweet Carina Trey was missing her front hand. Seeing her you would never believe that she was handicapped. She would zip around the cage, run on her wheel, and climb just about anything. I did have ramps in my reptarium for her, but for the most part my fluffy boys used them rather than Rena. About the only thing she had difficulty with was getting over the PVC bars in the cage. Alot of that difficulty was because in addition to not having a front arm, she was a very petite glider & it was harder for her to reach.

thanks everyone
yea he seems to be doing great,he takes his meds teice a day, eats alot drinks water and in 10 days i'm taking him to the vet again.i'm shocked how fast he is.hopefully hes not in any pain
he's in a small cage now but i'm thinking of getting him a bigger one until hes healed but his brother lives in a cage with horizontal and vertical bars and Timmy climbs up and down when hes out. the only thing i'm afraid of is his brother Gilligan-hes a little bit more agressive and i want to avoid attacks. i let them sniff each other and play one in one outside the cage.
again thank you all for the help and support!!

I am so scared that my little ones will get their nails stuck and break something. I don't want them to get hurt!!!

How do you know if their nails need to me cut? A few times in the tent I panicked because they look stuck, but then did fine... How do you know they are just not holding something good, rather then stuck?

Also, how to you trim them?

Gliders nails grown in a curve to a sharp point. If they are getting too long, that curve can get caught in fabrics (even fleece) or can grow to where they are curving back into the pads of their toes.

For me, if they are sharp enough to cause ME pain when they are running on my bare skin, then I know it is time for a trim. Visual inspection also to make sure they are not growing too long.

You can clip their nails by using regular nail clippers (lots use baby nail clippers but they are to small for my clumsy fingers) and you want to clip just the tips of the nails.

I hold the glider in a pouch and I pull one little hand out at a time using the pouch to "wrap" the glider. This seems to cause less stress for my gliders and prevents them from biting me (if they get the urge). Have some regular flour handy incase you clip to short and draw blood. Dab the flour on the nail to stop the bleeding.

Yogies or other treats help to distract them too and make it more of a treat for them than a "chore" that has to be done.

lol, yogies are candy for animals.

They are small chocolate chip shaped yogurt drops. They come in a variety of flavors though most common are vanilla. Exotic Nutrion sells them and they are actually human grade yogurt drops (pretty yummy!). They are the same thing as what you would make the yogurt covered pretzels with.

But, just remember, they are CANDY and should not be fed in excess.

I also find that it is easiest to trim the nails before waking them up so that they are kind of sleepy and no active.

Dancings method of trimming nails is THE BEST method. I tried just the burritoing in a towel trick, but our gliders crabbed the entire time and it was a chore. Now that we have switched to the pouch method, We only have a few that will crab for a second and then stop. I used to HATE trimming nails and hoped my trim trax would do it for me. Once I got rid of the Wodents, I started doing them on my own and it has been awesome. Plus it gives you more one on one time with your babies to check every single digit for "ouchies"

I had a friend that had a joey come OOP with only one eye. You couldn't tell by the way she got around that she was missing anything. She was the cutest little girl, too. mlove

Im a little confused... Isnt this thread from nearly three years ago? Did I miss something?

And what about the boy who cried wolf? Was that whole story, or stories, all untrue?
