You could try and add a little more apple juice to the BML and making his fruit into a soft mix as well as his veggies. He may be able to eat more comfortable.

Right now Sassy still has his front teeth and a few right next to them. It was one of his tiny lower teeth that came out last time in the office. So at this time he's still able to use his lower teeth to scrape the food out. I'm offering more soft foods at this time, so when the time comes that he does lose the rest of his teeth that he'll be used to a diet where he laps more. I've also been cutting open his bugs for him, so he can lick out the parts that he likes without having his teeth irritate him while he's doing it. Maybe adding more juice to his BLM would be a good thing. He's strange, sometimes he licks the bowl clean and other times he ignores it completely. I've tried yougert with him. Most of the time he ignores it, though someone has been licking a little at the strawberry banana yougert that they've had the last few days. I also give glideraid on a regular basis, only, I mix it with juice rather than water to add a few more vitamins. Whenever they get that it's almost always drank by the next morning. I guess I just want him to eat more so he gains more weight, but Sassy has never been a big eater or weighed lots. I suppose so long as he looks good and feels good I should be happy rather than worrying that he weighs 80 grams rather than 85 grams. Hopefully as he stays healthy, he'll continue to gain grams. Keep your fingers crossed for him.

There was a thread that I opened earlier that discussed blending the BML the Fruits and the veggies all together in one mix then freezing it and offering it to the glider. The post is entitled "A new spin on the BML diet" it is located in the diet section of the board. You might want to read that and make your own decision if it would help your glider. It is not been throughly tested or proven, but in the case of your glider it might help. I have noticed it promotes rapid weight gain. The pros and cons are really discussed throughly.

Well, Sassy's troubles are continuing. I had to take him back to the vet's on Friday. He'd stopped eating his bugs again. While he was there, my poor baby lost another tooth. Hopefully though it was the only one that was bad and ouchy. Anyway, he's back on Baytril. He goes back to the vets in 3 weeks for a checkup. Keep your fingers crossed that he keeps the 5-6 teeth that he has left.

Chris, have they ever said why he's losing his teeth? Any ideas on what is going on? give him from all of us and one for you too! Periodontal Disease comes to mind as a possible cause for Sassy's losing teeth and not eatting because of the pain associated with the periodontal disease. Periodontal (gum) diseases, including gingivitis and periodontitis, are serious infections that if left untreated, can lead to tooth loss. The word periodontal means "around the tooth." Periodontal disease is a chronic bacterial infection that affects the gums and bone supporting the teeth.
Periodontal disease can affect one tooth or many teeth. It begins when the bacteria in plaque (the sticky, colorless film that constantly forms on your teeth) causes the gums to become inflamed(gingivitis). Left untreated, plaque can spread and grow below the gum line. Toxins produced by the bacteria in plaque irritate the gums. The toxins stimulate a chronic inflammatory response in which the body turns on itself, and the tissues and bone that support the teeth are broken down and destroyed. Gums separate from the teeth, forming pockets (spaces between the teeth and gums) that become infected. As the disease progresses, the pockets deepen and more gum tissue and bone are destroyed. Often, this destructive process has very mild symptoms. Eventually, teeth can become loose and may have to be removed.
CAUSES OF PERIODONTAL DISEASE:
1) bacterial plaque (the #1 cause of periodontal disease) 2) Smoking/tobacco use (in humans) 3) Genetics/Heredity 4) PREGNANCY as horomnal changes can affect many of the body tissues including gums. Gums can become sensitive, and at times react strongly to the hormonal fluctuations which, in turn, can increase the susceptibility risk to gum disease during pregnancy. 5) STRESS is also a risk factor for periodontal disease. Research studies have demonstrated that stress can make it more difficult for the body to fight off infection, including periodontal diseases. And we know how easily gliders can experience stress. 6) POOR NUTRITION can compromise the body's immune system making it harder for the body to fight off infection. Because periodontal disease is a serious infection, poor nutrition can worsen the condition of one's gums.
Bourbon's vet has successfully treated a couple of gliders with periodonal disease in the past. My suggestion would be to have Sassy's vet contact Bourbon's vet (listed in the GLIDER vet DATABASE) for consultation on Sassy's dental problems:

According to my vet, Sassy has extreme peridontal disease. I know before he began treating him, he contacted several Glider knowledgable vets. We had hoped that by removing the bad teeth that we could halt the progress, but it just seems like we get him well only to have another tooth go bad. Hopefully this was the last one, but chances are he'll lose more. On a positive note, Sassy is feeling much better. He's started eating his bugs again. His weight is good, he's actually gained a gram. He's also gotten alot of energy back. The last several days he's come out to play when I get the gang out rather than hiding in his pouch. Also, he isn't sucking on his tail so much. He doesn't like taking his medicine, but he's a god boy and does eventually open his mouth for me, of course that may be because he enjoys spitting his medicine back at me. I think Nicky has gotten a bit jealous of him though. Nicky has started walking on the ceiling to get my attention. And Zoe, well the little princess thinks that all the extra goodies they have been getting have been because of her and has become more friendly towards me (she was always a little skittish and stand-offish) Keep your fingers crossed that Sassy continues to do better.

Sassy Update#20716 05/17/0402:22 AM05/17/0402:22 AM
Well, Sassy was at it again. A little over a week ago he had to go back into the vets for another mouth infection. This time his poor cheek swelled up since the infected tooth was one of his upper ones. He'd also stopped wanting to eat his wormies and wasn't showing much interest in any of his other favorite foods. I was sooooo scared, he dropped down to 68 grams almost overnight. Anyway, at the vets, his tooth came out (of course) and he was put back on his meds. He also got his mouth washed out with mouthwash, so apparantly his breath smelled better afterwords, though I won't testify to that. Due to his weight, I started syringe feeding Sass. I feed him 4 times a day with a 1cc syringe, and he gets 3cc's total each feeding (unless he's a little pig with his wormies). Since I started this, he has showed a renewed interest in his wormies and is now up to 77 grams. He's such a little trooper. I know he doesn't really enjoy having food shoved in his mouth in the middle of the night, but he's really good about it and doesn't spit it out on Momma like he does his medicine. He's even started to jump again. Not real far, but he is making little jumps to me so he can run and hide on my back where I can't reach him to stick a syringe in his mouth . He's got alot more energy now and is looking much better than he has in a while. Hopefully, he'll be up over 80 grams soon. Keep your fingers crossed everyone. By the way, at the vets, we discovered that Sassy had more teeth than we expected. After losing the one in the office, we counted the teeth left. He has his 2 lower front teeth, 1 front upper tooth, 1 upper tooth on the right and 1 upper tooth on the left.

I wish his teeth would grow back, but nope, they're gone for good. Anyway, I just had to tell everyone. After I fed Sassy this morning, I weighed him and he was 81 grams!!!! He looked great! He's not quite so skinny any more. I would still like him to gain some more, but it looks like we're on the right track with the syringe feeding. Today he tried sweet potato/turkey baby food and seemed to like it. But then he always had liked sweet potato's. He's so funny when I give it to him. After every mouthful, he wants to climb onto my had to eat it. That's not so bad, but then he runs and hangs in the middle of my back and it takes me forever to get him back to give him another bite. If I manage to get my hand away before he can climb on, he'll stand there on his back feet with his little arms out to the side. He reminds me of the 98 pound weakling who's impersonating the incredible hulk. I'll try to get a picture of him, but I'm not going to promise. My hands are usually pretty occupied at the time. Anyway, I just wanted to share the good news about my baby. Keep your fingers crossed that he continues to gain weight.

Chris, I'm thrilled to hear this. Sometimes I think gliders are our best role models for courage and perserverance. And Sassy gets the award, in my book. I hope his health and weight continue to improve!
try gerber sweet potatoe and corn they luv that too. great to hear a good story keep him getting heavier. my big gliders are over 200 grams and my little one is 80 grams. he'll do just fine without those teeth just like a person.

Chris, Sassy is soooo lucky to have you for his mommy! Wow, you two have really been thru the ringer! So far Sweet Pea's teeth are holding steady, but still being closely watched. I'm prepared to start warming her frozen/colder foods up when she starts to appear that she can't eat them cold. Hopefully the rest will either stick around or not be too rough when they decide to come out. Great job with his weight and he's such a little trooper for you! Chey, I'm glad to hear that Sweet Pea's teeth are doing well. I wish I'd discovered Sassy's before they got too bad, but these guys are just too good at hiding problems until they're major. Sass has been such a trooper for me, and he is so good about taking his food (even though he doesn't really like it). He's come such a long way from the little wild boy who spent his first 2 months with me biting me (with the intent to cause sevear bodily harm) I never would have guessed that he was such a little love at that time. Keep us updated on Sweet Pea.
