Hey:) So very soon the second week of October I will be bringing home a baby girl. I was given a huge cage for free, but it has a little rust between the seems. I want to sand it down and re-paint the cage but I am afraid the new paint may be toxic? Does anyone know of something that would be safe? Or have any suggestions? Its a beautiful cage and I would like to try and restore it myself.

Sorry you haven't gotten any responses before this. I suspect the reason is that no one is quite sure of the answer to your question.

What is the cage like? If it's a bird cage, is the bar spacing 1/2" or less?

I think you are right to worry about the toxicity of paint. I'm not sure if there is a "regular" paint that would be safe.

If the cage is really great, you might be able to find a place that does powdercoating. They may be able to sandblast it and apply a tough powder coating that I think they bake on. I have no idea how much this would cost, but I've heard a powdercoating place advertising on the radio so that's why I believe there are such places. The radio ad was suggesting that people bring in their outdoor furniture to be "renewed".

If the cage isn't really spectacular, it might not be worth taking a chance on regular paint.

I love this question. ;-;

Ziggys cage is really nice, and he loves running around in it, but there's a lot of rust on the bars and stuff. Mom said there's this spray stuff we can get, but I've been meaning to ask around here first, to see if anyone else was in my situation, and see what they did.

We really can't afford another cage, so painting, or finding a way around the rust is our only option for right now. ;\

You have to make sure you get all the rust off but I've heard that the Krylon Kid's Paint is safe. It comes in spray cans. If you paint the cage I would wait a few days before you actually let your little furbutt back in the cage.

I know Rust-Oleum is a good thing to seal and stop rust. My mother and I planned on sanding it down with sand paper and then using a dremel to get out any hard to get peices. Then doing a primer with the rust-oleum and the whatever type of safe paint I could. But I am sure the safest thing to do is buy a cheap new cage on E-bay, research this and take my time refinishing it. I think thats the safest thing to do rather than guessing or spending loads to get it sand blasted. Its a great idea but perhaps not in my budget.

It is a sugra glider cage, if i am not mistaken that they are specific. Skinny bars close together, but its tall, really great:)

Thanks for any feedback!! 9 days till she comes home!!!!!!!!!

You can always shellac it. Totally nature ingrediants, non-toxic and leaves a nice finish!

Edit- Just re-read post, you are talking about a metal cage, not sure you can shellac metal, i think only wood??
