Ok hopefully I'm not getting annoying with this whole joey situation but I'm just so confuzzled!

How do I tell if she's ready to go? Age isn't working or even giving me an idea because I have NO CLUE how old she is.

She can/will eat bits of food although I've only seen her do it once. Ogre brings food into the pouch for mom so I suspect that is when she is eating it- if at all. She also won't eat mealies yet- we tried squeezing some guts out for her & she licked her little chops when some got on her tongue- but she didn't take any interest in the bug itself.

I can't tell if she's nursing (other than my other post about mom's pouch looking stretched) since I can't get in the pouch to check them out (mom's not having any of that!). Plus I think I'd have to be checking 24/7 to catch them in action AND it's kind of hard to tell what's going on in there because all 6 insist on sleeping together!

I've seen her in the wheel...

I have tried weighing her but haven't been able to get a final number yet! I did this on Sunday. I know her weight WITH the pouch but I don't know how much the pouch is to be able to subtract it. The family got back in it before I could weight it! So hopefully tonight I can figure that out for sure.

I'm going to try and get a picture of her tonight- she has a baby face that is just to die for! Hopefully that will help.

She looks like a decent size to me... She's crabby but will still come sniff us, even climb on us! She is sooo cute - we're calling her Jasmine until she gets a new home.

Should I just keep her with mom until I know she's not nursing anymore?

Suz... if you're reading this: I saw you said (he he!) that you had a joey nurse until it was about 3 months OOP! Crazy! Maybe she'll have to stay with me for a while!

If you need any more info to help me narrow this down please ask & I'll answer as best I can!!

is she pooping and peeing all on her own? Or is momma still helping her? Weight can't always be a factor because joeys are all different sizes, But we will not let a joey go home until she weighs at least 46 grams.

When she is eating by herself, more at the food dish instead of in the pouch. Most joeys start to venture out around 4-6 weeks oop.

Most of my babies don't really like mealies until around 10 weeks or more. Some will lick off momma and daddys mealies but never take one for them selves for a while.

Don't ever feel like you are asking to many questions... thats how we all learn.

I'm pretty sure she poo's by herself. I definetely don't see her at the food dish very often though.

I am almost positive (without even looking at her weight with the pouch- just remembering!) that she is over the 46 gram limit you like.

I'm just scared that I will assume she's older than she is because the original owner told me she was only 1 month OOP- but I just don't see how that is possible!

So do you think it's safe for me to let her go to a new home- maybe after a week or two- as long as I see her at the food dish more often? I just don't want to take her away from mom if she's still nursing. What if she is a late nurser like sugarglidersuz mentioned in another post!? Oy- poor baby!

is there any way to seperate her from mom for a night or two to see how she does?

If you get pictures we might be able to help you also. Young gliders have a look to them. I would wait until you feel more comfortable until you give her up. I can tell you a bunch of stuff but you are the one looking at her and seeing how she is. Trust your gut.

If your gut is telling you to keep her with her mom, keep her with the mom. You don't want to risk the health of Jasmine because the previous owner made a mistake. 1 month is WAY too young to be selling gliders. I say, until you are 100% comfortable with letting her go to a new home, keep her with you and her mom.

I personally would not let her go until I knew and that is why I am telling you b/c I know you worry about her everyday. Do what you think is right and do what Elisabeth said and see what happens if you separate them for 1 night. See if you can see how much she is eating, defactating, etc. on her own.

Take care and good luck.

When I separate her- how should I do it?

Obviously not with either of the parents- but what about her siblings? I'm just thinking out loud here but she definetely should spend the night with someone right? Probably a sister? She has one!

Ixnay on the icturepay. Wasn't happening tonight- I had to give Jupiter some good quality time and I couldn't get to the baby without letting everyone out. I'll try again tomorrow when she's passed out.

I DO think she is older than a month but, LOL just because I think it doesn't mean I'm right I don't know if I said it before- or if I said it without sounding like I was doubting myself too much- but I think she is probably ready to leave mom but I just want to make SURE first. It's mainly the nursing thing that I'm not positive about since I never see her do either, eat or nurse.

Tina- my cage from K&D should be here at least by Wednesday- tomorrow if I'm realllllly lucky! But knowing that- I'm saying Wed. I still am looking forward to those cages though because Chad has been spending beaucoup time at my apartment and I don't have anything for him to bring Roxie & Stitch over with. When they get here, they get here- don't stress about it but still thanks for the update!

No prob.

If you sell her, will she have a cagemate? Will she be sold as a pair? Think about that before you separate her. You want to get her ready for those things. I'm hoping the person interested in buying her will have a buddy for her...

I'd prefer to give her away with her brother so that I know she'll have a friend. However, if someone only wants her and they already have someone to be her cagemate I will separate them.

Either way she has to go to a home that already has a buddy or she will be coming with her own buddy

Poor Jupiter is all alone until I get Emmet, so I know how much it sucks for them to be by themselves & I don't want her to go through that

Bump!!

I'm going to separate the baby and momma tonight- should I only put her in with her sister? Then leave the two boys in with mom & dad?

Also- I know I'll be watching to make sure she's eating... but what should I be watching for to decide whether or not I need to put her back with mom and that things aren't the way they should be???

[:"green"]Sarah, Sorry I didn't see this post when you first put it up. In my experience, joeys tails start to get fluffy like an adult's tail when they are about 6 weeks o.o.p. and just starting to eat on their own. Look at Jasmine's tail & see if the fur is all still flat and smooth or is it fluffy? This is a pretty good way to tell if they're at least 6 weeks old, from my experience.
When you put her out on her own tonight (with her sister), one of the things to listen for is her crying. If she cries a lot, then she's too young & put her back in with Mommy. If she just seems to cry a little bit, that is pretty normal. The crying sounds like "Nyitch, Nyitch, Nyitch"... sort of like a crab, but not as loud, not as long, usually in trios... I wish I knew how to upload soundbytes, but alas, I haven't figured it out yet. I know! Call me at 866-399-4476 (before 9 p.m.) and I'll have you listen to one of my babies! I know they will cry if I take them away from mommy for even just a few seconds cuz they're still so young .
Hope this helps,

Thanks Suz!!!!!!

Chad & I talked about it tonight & we decided to wait until at least tomorrow before I try her out for one night. I just got my 5' tall cage from K&D (yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) and it's 12:30 am now & I just finished putting it all together & hanging pouches. We figured it would be best if we put the whole family in the new cage rather than separate them AND move them all in one night. I'm hoping for tomorrow.

Although- I can't imagine why there would be any problems with this new cage- it's like moving them from a phone booth to a football stadium

I'm hoping still to get pics of the baby tomorrow- and from what I recall her tail is fluffy already!! I will take a closer look next time she decides to grace me with her presence!

*PS. I'm putting pics of the new cage in my Colony thread in glider talk if you wanna see! Hopefully tomorrow morning during breakfast

Well I finally have the baby's weight- she is 54.5 grams!!

According to the sticky in this section that is the average weight of baby's between/around 7-8 weeks out of pouch- so that is a good sign! Also- that weight is from last weekend! I just finally got to weigh the pouch since it was empty for washing, so I'm sure she's put on a little more weight since then. *I hope!*

I am still going to separate her and her sister from mom so I can observe and be totally sure. We're doing that tonight for sure! I'll try and get a better/more accurate weight tonight too!

Wish me luck!

Well... it's 3 am here- the girls have been separated from mom for about 4 hours and all things are good!

All I've heard is a bark or two, some hissing, a chirp and a whole lot of bell jingling! Yay!! I'm so happy

YEAH SUGARBABEES!!! sounds like you have gotten this all figured out! What kind of scales did you use? I want to weigh all of my gliders, but I think it would be really hard to do with my Weight Watcher's scales! My little BooBoo is nearly as big as his mom! That darned daddy of his... Loki is just a tiny glider, and when BooBoo wants to take a piggyback ride, he looks really silly on top of her - as BIG as his momma!

Right now, I am trying to see how he gets along with Reese, who needs a cagemate. All of my gliders are just being wierd this morning! Everyone is talking!

The scale I have is from my work... we sell printing equipmment & supplies and it used to be for mixing ink. It's a digital scale and it's really easy to use!

So since you probably can't get one for mixing ink I think that some people have been getting them at Walmart or Meijer- or I would also guess an office supply store. I think they're just used for weighing mail!

[:"green"]Cyndi, I got my scale from WalMart in the kitchen goods area. It's an electronic scale by "Good Cook" that weighs in both ounces and grams. It's very simple to use & seems to be very accurate.

Well good news!!

I saw Miss Crabby Pants steal a bite of mealie from her sister this morning! I also saw her pigging out last night I knew she was eating but it was the first time she'd actually do it in front of me!

I know they generally don't eat mealies until they are a little bit older so yay!
