Okay, so it's another neuter question. I have to take Giz to the vet Wed. morning and I'm about to have a heart attack. I don't know what to do or expect. I have hunted all night for a definitve answer on which one is better. Glue or Stitches? I don't have any idea. Do they use those dissolving stitches? How long to I have to wait to put him back in with Greta? She has a joey IP and I'm afraid it might stress her out, because by the looks of her she is about to pop. Can I put them in the same cage, but like divide it some how? How would I go about doing that? I just need some advice, I've never done this before. I would greatly appreciate it!

The incision is so small if done right there is no need for either. The one successful neuter I've had done here out of 3 was done with neither on the outside. The small area heals up REALLY quickly, and had this one had a family to go back in with that after the neuter night he would have it went that well.

They wake up with the collar already on so they cannot disturb the area, then when they are picked up as long as they are fine the collar comes off under supervision. They usually leave the site alone with that type of neuter.

But what type of neuter does YOUR vet do? Some vets only do certain types. My vet does pom off with glue. So I used a friends vet this last time for the pom on no glue/stiches.

Hey there. I still get nervous over neuters even though I've gone through a bunch, so I understand your nerves.
1. glue/stiches---neither is best. If your vet leaves the pom on, there's no need. Anything "artificial" placed will increase the amount of attention Gizmo will pay to that area. If your vet removes the pom, a tiny amount of glue may be needed. The key is it should ONLY be right on the area. If there's too much, he'll most likely try to pull it out.
2. how long to separate---barring any complications, I put the boy back in w/his cagemate that same night. My vet sends them home in an ecollar and I leave them in in until I get them home. Then I take the collar off and watch how they act. They normally don't pay any extra attention to the area.

Now, let me add: make sure to have an ecollar on hand just in case there's a problem. You want to be prepared in case there is a problem. W/Greta and joey ip, you want to keep stress down to a minimum for the entire family. Bravo to you for doing the neuter now because it's the best time to do it when joeys are involved.

Dr.G does one stitch on the outside and leaves the pom on. I do not put the collar on till I see if he is going to mess with it. They are under enough stress waking up from surgery no since adding more by having him waking up with a collar. Just have one ready.
I wait 24hr before I put them back with their mate. It gives them time to heal some.

I've never been through a neuter (I avoid joeys by having only females wink ) but I saw Dr. Tristan's talk about it at the last SGGA. He uses glue, poms off. One thing I thought was interesting is that he (or was it Dr. W?) puts a few dots of the glue in different areas on the glider so they have several "sites" to pay attention to rather than just THE site.

My vet said that she used glue, but then I started looking around here and I started to wonder if glue was bad. She also does poms off. What do I do? I'm so torn. I know it's different for everyone, I just want him to be alright since there is a baby on the way. I am prepared, I made him an e collar last night and even tried it on him, works like a charm. I know I'm a hassle, but I'm just trying to figure out what to do.

Your not a hassle! Your being a good glider mom!

Each type of neuter is going to have success stories and also (not so many) some that had some mishaps. Some gliders mess with surgical glue. Some gliders mess with stiches. Alot of them dont at all. Alot of gliders are back in with their familys that night and are totally fine with the procedure. You are prepared with your collar and talk with your vet about your concerns, and Im sure things will be fine. smile

I have had 3 successful neuters - all were done poms on, no glue or stitches. My vet says that every glider goes after their incision site when they are first coming out of anesthesia until they are fully awake. She said the disoriented feeling is really upsetting to them and they focus on the one thing that feels different. She holds a wooden tongue depressor over the incision site until they are fully awake, then they snap out of it and are fine. dunno

All 3 boys came home that day and went straight back in with their cage mates, but I would discuss with your vet the expectations he/she has about what they should be doing.

Thanks everyone. I really do appreciate it all of the answers. I will talk to her first thing Wed. morning to see what I should expect. I really was about in tears last night over the whole situation, but he HAS to be neutered. I'm all "pro spay/neuter". I wil be sure to let everyone know how everything went. I will just take the e collar with him just in case she would need it.
