Hi,

Is there a certain age or reason that a glider may or may not choose to use their tail to carry things? I have provided lots of little toys, monkeys, round-ish things and I have never seen any of mine use their tails to carry. They are on the young-ish side and I was wondering if it's something that happens with age, or if it has to be a learned behavior.. or do some just not use their tails?

Just curious,
Cyndi

Sugar Gliders do not use their tails to carry things. In the wild they use it to steer their way as they glide from tree to tree. There's a term for it but I have forgotten it.

Some of mine carry and some don't. My Ayla is obsessive! She packs everything into their pouch. I have to unload it every morning, just so Stitch has room to sleep roflmao But she didn't start carrying until she was over 2 yrs old. dunno Her favorite is euc leaves on very thin branches, and wireless vines from walmart. She will spend hours getting one from the bottom of the cage, up to the pouch. There have been times I was sure her tail was permanently knotted. roflmao

Yes, they do. Or atleast they can. Not all will use their tails to carry things but there are many many pictures of gliders doing just that. Some of our crazy captive gliders will carry toys, fake leaves or other things back to their sleep pouches.

I've got a glider that often carries her little blanket around with her.

Wild gliders will use their tails to carry sticks and leaves etc to build their nests.

They do not, however, have very strong tails so they should never be picked up or pulled by their tails.

All 6 of mine tail carry (my youngest, about a year old) just started recently. If you find something they like to carry, they usually eventually will. Although I don't know if having a tail carrier will help teach a non-carrier how much fun it is (maybe that is why all of mine do it?) dunno

Great question! i was seriously wondering this too but never thought about asking. I really want my girls to become tail carriers!! They're only 4.5 months old though so i guess we still have to time before they start carrying. I was showing them about a week ago how to do it, but they really didn't have a clue as to what i was doing roflmao

I have a male glider that I'm sure is going nuts every night. I have a bird toy of three connected rings that hangs from the top of the cage that has a little bell on the bottom. Every night he threads himself through the hoop and wraps his tail around it. Once in position he tries to pull it into his pouch, but since it's attached to the top of the cage it never happens! I have actually tried to unhook it so he can pull it in, but then he can't thread himself thru it. Poor lil guy! He never stops trying tho! I've tried to see if he'll carry other things, but to no avail!

Hi,

Thanks for all the feedback! I really hope one or more of mine become tail carriers... it is SOOOO cute I would love to see it. I can only imagine how cute it would be if one were carrying around their blankie Dancing! That must be adorable! I guess I'll just wait and watch and hope someone finds something they like enough to carry around!

My lil mister goes crazy about carrying stuff into their pouch and if he can't find anything, he'll sit there with his tail curled, barking to wake me up so I can reset all his bracelets and monkeys. -.-;;

His mate doesn't carry stuff on her tail but I got her to once! She was sitting there so patiently watching him so I asked if she wanted to try and I slid a bracelet over her head...she messed around with it, trying to get it on her tail and her 3rd try, she got it. She was so excited and it was so funny watching her try because she looked like a clumsy kid. Now, she seems interested in trying to do it on her own but I think she's too embarassed. If I'm nearby and I put it over her head for her, she has no problems with getting it on her tail. dunno
