I am looking into buying cages for my little one. What is the best cage to look into getting? I have heard of reptariums being good and also the wire cages. HELP!!! I am almost to the point of locking myself up in a mental institution with all the stress of the preparation. I am looking forward to it, don't get me wrong. I just don't want to be doing something wrong for my babies.

I was going to make a cage for mine, and then I started looking at what other people are doing, and there is what appears to be a majority of people that use bird cages for their gliders. So I went that route. The reptarium is a low cost, easy to move option, but there are issues with attaching toys and such to them. I looked long and hard at one before I went with the bird cage. Then I had to decide, big and cheap (such as the $89 cage on eBay or at Double-R supply RR-Supply ) or something a little smaller, but built better (and more expensive) like what I got from SunCoast Sugar Gliders Sturdy Cage . Now that I have the Sturdy Cage, I love it. It looks nice, and while it is not a monster cage, it is still pretty big. In fact, it is a lot bigger than the cage we had 8 years ago for our first gliders. Plus, my wife isn't embarrassed to have it in our living room. Good luck!

It just depends on what you have the space for.

I'd go the biggest that you can reasonably go while still taking into consideration cleaning/movability.

I personally like PVC coated cages the best. I have the 5' tall cage from K&D Exotics and I love it. You can alos buy the materials from Klubertanz and make your own. Very easy to clean, sturdy, and lasts.

I have never used a reptarium, but I worry about my gliders possibly chewing through them and the hassle of hanging toys/water bottles/etc.

I have also used bird cages. To me they are just louder than the PVC cages because the bars tends to rattle when the gliders jump from one side to another and when the wheels bang around it gets noisy. I bought the "fake sturdy cage" off of Ebay and it rusted on me in a few months.

How big do you want it? I built my own and it is 5 ft. tall, 3 ft. wide, and 2.5 ft. deep. Mine love it and I actually saved a lot of money on it.

I would like to get a reasonably nice size. One that has room for my glider to glide and yet still fit in my house.

I think the better question is "how much do you want to spend?"

I just got the 5' cage from K&D that someone mentioned above here & I absolutely (ABSOLUTELY!!!) love it! We put it together last night and it is gynormous. I'll attach a pic for you.

I also have a bird cage that I use for Jupiter and I love her cage too. It's not as big but it has a nice big door along with lots of smaller doors, it's easy to clean & it has a stand. I have no clue how much it was though because it came along with her when she was rehomed to me. I'll attach a pic of that too- maybe to help you get a better idea?

One word on reptariums- I think they make good travel cages and some really love them to keep their babies in as a permanent home. I personally can't handle this. The only way that I know of to clean them is to completely take everything attached to the mesh off, then the mesh itself, and throw it into the washer. It is just too much of a hassle for how often it needs to be done. I also think they get rather stinky quickly from the pee running down the sides. A regular cage can be wiped down daily but I don't like wiping the rept. If you use anything like a clorox wipe or something similar it leaves little soapy looking suds in the tiny holes. (Ok... so it was a lot of words )

Here's the birdy cage.... I think it's like 2 x 3 x 3.5 feet or something close to that.

I love the cage!!!!! How much was the cage, Sarah? I know that I don't feel comfortable getting a galvanized steel cage because of the deposits left on the metal due to their pee. I am sorta liking the reptarium but not as a permanent home but as a travel cage. I just don't know how much to spend for a really good cage but not overly large.

I'm not sure which cage you're asking about...

My 5' cage from K&D was like $225 with shipping. ($180 for cage + $45 shipping) Luckily I conned Chad into getting it for me as a birthday gift (my b-day is in July!) I know it's pricey but it is definetely worth it- it's a very very nice cage.

My other cage- I don't know how much it was since I didn't buy it. I paid $200 for Jupiter, all her toys, and the cage with the stand. I THINK the girl told me that it cost her about $250 or somewhere in that range but I don't know if that included the stand or anything. And for that price- you might as well get the 5' from k&d!!!

Let us know what you decide!

I am even thinking about making my own if I can get my dear hubby to help. How hard is that to do?

Making them yourself isn't that hard but I'm not sure you will save much.

www.klubertantz.com sells wire like used by K&D exotics (like SugarBabees's cage). Once you figure out what size cage you want, you can talk to them and they will even precut all the peices for you. Then, the peices can be put together with either (dang it, what are they called??) clamps, or you can use zip ties (get the larger stronger ones). Personally, I like zip ties (they are a glider owners friend!!!!!) because if you ever need to move the cage any long distance, just cut the zip ties and take it apart. Klubertantz also sells the hardware for making the doors and such.

Judge not until you have walked in their shoes and lived their lives. What you see online is only part of the story.

I have the same cage SugarBabees has, and my babies LOVE it. It is, by far, the best cage I have seen for Sugar Gliders, besides custom built cages, and the Gliders have plenty of room to run, play and frolick. It also has HUGE doors, which make access to the gliders easy, and allow you to use the biggest Wodent wheels, Stealth wheels and Glider Kitchens.

we built our cage from vinyl coated hardware cloth (small grid- available special order at our local Ace Hardware) and PVC piping for a frame! I love it and so do the girls, but we probably spent as much as buying a slightly smaller cage- its 5' tall inside (on 4" legs) and 30"*30" in the othr 2 dimensions... we just built a second mate to it as well - almost done, needs a door, top and bottom.. and those will go on tonight.. I'll take some pics and post them this afternoon since I told someone else I would do that for them when we built it!

Remember, the bigger cage the better, as long as you can get it thru the door for cleaning outside.

Between my husband and me, we have one 4'x2'x6' cage, two 3'x2'x6' cages, five 3'x2'x5' cages, four 24"x18"x36" cages, and numerous travel cages. (We combined two gliderhouseholds into one.) All but two of the cages are made with wire from Klubertanz.

Try this

It's the cage building page from the green buttons at the top... if you want to find it yourself it's under the links button, in the links drop down menu... and then it says "GC links Cage Building Page"

Good luck
