I bought some shelves for my cage (because it didn't come with any) that are some sort of metal. I don't know what type they are. They were advertised on a glider breeder's site (even though the breeder was not selling them), so I figured they'd be okay. But when I got them, the package didn't say what type of metal they are. I'm thinking of getting them powder coated, but it's VERY expensive! Does anyone have these shelves, and do you know if they're safe? A link to the shelves. Thanks in advance!! Kristy

Those should be just fine to use.

If these are fine, then what kinds of metal are toxic? I don't want to poison the little guys. Kristy

Galvanized wire is one type of wire to avoid at all costs. Galvanized wire, when in contact with urine, has been known to cause very painful UTI's (urinary tract infection) and the UTI's are very costly to clear up. Powder-coated and PVC-coated wires are safe to use. I hope this helps.

I have those shelves in one of my cages... And the reason they're safe is because they're already coated. They're not bare metal.

Galvanized metal is what you want to avoid. The zink used in the galvanizing process is what causes the problem. Stainless Steel is fine, pvc coated or powder coated are fine. Most bird cages or similar type of metal (shelves or whatever) are fine.
