Okay, took Giz to the vet this morning and he did fine with the neuter. I have him home now and he is after that site like crazy. Is he just cleaning it? I am terrified! I have tried a hundred times to get that ecollar on him and he just keeps pushing it off. I need advice and quick! His vet is 1 hour away and I called another vet to help me, but they haven't called me back yet.

How to make an ecollar http://www.suzsugargliders.com/ecollar.htm You'll probably have more success with the collar with 2 people until you get used to it, and he stops fighting so hard. Have the second person hold the glider down with thumbs along the spine, and you'll kind of need to (GENTLY) pull his head toward you so he doesn't scrunch his neck to get the collar wrapped around-then tape. It can take a few tries to get it straight. If you can just get it on, and let him fight it out (a blanket on the floor works), he should be calmer later to reposition it if it doesn't come off.

okay, got him in! I'm afraid it is choking him. His nose will turn purple and then pink. Is he just holding his breath again? I don't know what to do. Thank You Linda for your help, that was a whole lot easier. How long will he fight with this thing? I can get a pen underneath it. I will take any and all advice. Thanks again, I appreciate it.

What about wrapping him up in an ace bandage to where he can't get to it. Would that work if this doesn't? How long should I leave it on him for?

sounds like the e collar is on good, just watch to make sure he does not find a way out of it, it is normal for them to throw a holy fit and act like it is the end of the world he may flail, his, crab and do whatever he can to raise a fuss, it is VERY normal. Can you look at his underside? How does it look? Was this a pom on or a pom off neuter? Were you given antibiotics and pain meds? Can you get us a pic of his site?

If you want/need to call me, my number is 620 215 4857 or you can pm my your's and I can call you. Grooming his site IS normal providing he is not doing any damage/chewing at it. You will need to watch VERY close to make sure one doesn't lead to the other though. It sounds like the ecollar is the best choice for him for now. Do you have any take home pain meds to give him? If so, what kind and do you know what they gave him at the vet's?

I feel so bad for him, I'm about to cry. I got him in it. He is trying to eat, which he is doing very well. He can't figure out how to get in his pouch to go to sleep. How can I help him? Pom off neuter with glue. My vet said she hadn't had any problems with the glue, but I have to be the one. I don't know how to help him. I feel terrible for doing this to him, but I said it's either the ecollar or his life and I chose the ecollar. No antibiotics, no pain meds. She said she gave him a shot of pain meds before he left and that should be all he needs. I don't know. I've looked at him and it doesn't look any different than it did before we left the vets office. He has just been licking and licking and licking. He's soaking wet. He did pee on me a minute ago, so that's good. I will get on taking the picture.

Call your vet and ask for some oral torb to give him. Tell the vet he is showing signs of self mutilation and you feel he needs some pain meds. Try not to take no for an answer. If you have to, call some vets closer to you to see if they can help with getting you some torb. With the pom off, he will probably need the collar for a couple of days or he will groom until he gets all the glue off and opens himself up. Pain management is crutial. If he hurts, he will most likely chew.

I've already been on the phone with Gizmos mommy. She has a call into the vet to get advice, pain medication, and antibiotics if needed. It sounds like you have the collar on - lets hope that he keeps it on. Sending you lots of hugs......

Oh, and please don't let those "eyes" get to you. Ecollars are not fun for them but they are sometimes life saving. He WILL get over this. Just spoil him as much as he will let you for now.
As for his pouch...with the ecollar, they usually can't use a pouch...Rig up some hammocks towards the bottom of the cage to where you are kinda making him a cave. Do NOT close it in all the way...you will want to be able to see him to check on him.

Honestly some grooming is normal, especially if they used glue. If he seemed really agitated about going after it then you probably did the best thing putting an ecollar on him to make sure he doesn't start chewing it...you may have prevented him from self mutilating. Or he could have just been grooming...but better safe than sorry. If it looks different than it did when you brought him home (ie he did some damage) you'll want to bring him back in to the vet...but if it looks the same, and no damage was done, well, that's good news then, you could probably just call your vet and see what they think. I have heard that gliders, when glue is used, tend to want to groom it off. Hopefully someone with some glue experience can come along and tell you when it might be safe to take the ecollar off. I have never had to ecollar after a neuter so I am unsure. My last male also went to town grooming himself after his neuter though and I was watching him with paranoia! So I know how you feel about that

DEMAND pain meds from your vet! Do not take no for an answer! He needs Torb and NOW. Praying for your little Gizmo. He's in good hands with his mommy! Also, have your vet put him on antibiotics just in case.

I'm sorry you're having a stressful time, ELRS. I just had my little guy neutered last week, so I know some of what you're going through. Mine was also pom off with glue, but my vet gave me some pain medication with anti-inflamatory stuff, and I think that helped. My little guy did some grooming down there, but only for a few minutes at a time. It may be worth trying the vet that's closer to you to see if s/he would be willing to give you meds, or else the original vet. Hang in there, and you guys will get through this.

I hate glue. The vet used it on my friends guy when he was too hyper and tore jis stitch causing a scab to form and from him still acting up he was ripping the scab. Our vet removed the scab and placed on glue. He made a bit of a mess with the glue and we had to wait until it was completely gone then he had a couple more days in the color and after that he was better. He was a very naughty boy and was trying to remove the stitch though and then when he got the glue he was trying to chew it off. He was in a collar for three weeks, which was long but kept him safe. i doubt your experience will be this, so please do not worry. After the glue did not fall off we had to take him back to the vet and let him sort of peel it. His bottom area was completely bald and red, but he healed up in due time. I love our vet and he is great, but I do not think he is very glider saavy in emegencies unless you know and tell him what needs to be done. He is a good guy and has a great heart though...some vets are just that way. So is the hard spot of glue pretty minimal? I would say if he continunes to go after it and if he appears to do any pulling leave the collar on. The glue should fall off with a scab. You can always call your vet to consult if you get worried. You will need to have special sleeping arrangements for him and may also have to change your feeding setup or hand feed. Clean teh colar often, it will get messy.

From what I can see his site looks good! You might want to try and trim a little bit of the e collar off under his chin to allow a little movement so that he can eat and drink. Here is a picture of what type of feeding/water dish you can use for him that will make it easier for him to eat and drink. Feeders for Gliders in E Collars

You're getting all the expert advice from the right people, so all I will add is - hang in there!! I know you feel bad for him, but the collar is the right thing to do even if he seems pitiful in it! You're being a good mommy, and that's sometimes the hardest thing to be!

I just got back with his pain meds. He has a 3 day supply, she's holding off on the antibiotics unless I call and tell her to send me some. Bless his heart he is in his wheel. I keep checking on him, to make sure he's breathing. How is that for a mom? I will be giving him pain meds once daily to keep him comfortable.
Thank you, to all of you for helping me, because I won't rest until he's out of that ecollar.
I had ordered a cage set almost a month ago from ebay and it still hasn't got here yet. I would have had everything I needed for him to sleep peacefully. I hope it gets here soon!

I agree that his site does look very good. The ecollar can be trimmed to where it is between 1/4 of an inch to 1/2 of an inch past his nose. This should prevent him from being able to reach his site but make it easier for him to move around and to eat.
Just "rig" up some sort of "cave" for him. A small cardboard box cut open on one end will work with some fleece blankets in there for him.
Edited to add...I've had about 45 gliders neutered and never had any antibiotics for any of them. Unless he chews open the site, you shouldn't need any either.

Oh geez. I went to give Giz his meds and I was giving it to him, whenever I heard this little "singing" sound. Well, needless to say Greta's baby is hanging out of her pouch! Oh man, what am I going to do? I know it will probably be a couple more weeks until it actually comes out, but will he be better by then? I did cut down the ecollar and he's doing a little better with it. He is asleep in his wheel. I made him up some veggie relish and pureed it quite fine and I've been feeding him with a spoon. He has it made, bless his heart. He is getting royal treatment around here. When will I know he's okay to take off the collar? Will he have to wear it forever?

No, he won't have to wear it forever. Without me being there and seeing him (or even knowing his personality), my guess would be ecollar for 3 days. Tomorrow, about an hour after you give him his pain meds, you can take it off and see how he does without it. He will try to groom himself and some LIGHT grooming is normal and fine but if he is persistant about it, then the collar will need to go back on again.
Then try again the following day.
I've told this to many many people and have even had other's tell me...
BREATHE!
Deep relaxing cleansing breaths. This will help you relax and will help him be more relaxed as well. It WILL be alright!

Aww, I love all you guys!
Thank you Linda and Teresa, I may need to call both of you before this is over. He is trying his best to fit in the pouch with Greta but he just won't fit. I made him a temporary bed out of a pretzel box which is quite large and put him in some fleece blankets. He will not get in it, he wants to be where Greta is. I think he knows it's about time for the baby. I've actually calmed down quite a bit after I drugged him up and he's not so determined to get that collar off. Teresa-He is sweet, loving, and I never thought he would try this, but I was mistaken. I had been told while I was trying so hard to make that ecollar, that I didn't one. "My glider was fine, I put him back in his cage when I got him home and he never tried anything" No, some of them don't, but they are all not the same. I am just SOOO glad I was prepared with the ecollar. I cannot stress that enough, EVERYONE needs one. I know that now.
Whenever I saw him just constantly going at it today I was just like OH NO. I saw him licking and pulling, and I just flipped out. His lower body was just soaking wet. I could see that he was picking some "left over" glue out. I nipped that in the bud.
I am so glad that you guys are right here and know how much I care about and love him.

She actually went in there and looked around and then came back out. I think she might stress, because she was kind of a rescue, which is why I didn't want her pregnant, but that was an accident. She was left in a birdcage wih no human contact and peanuts and cat food to eat. She has made a great change, BUT I'm not sure how she would do with sleeping in that box. Is there something better that I could try? The box is plenty big enough for the both of them, but he just can't figure out how to turn his head around. I'm open to suggestions. By the way Linda, I must have missed your call, I just received a voice mail from you.
