Breeding Marks… So for any that have read my posts you know I don’t have Joyes… not that I am in any hurry …. But my Sage has a ‘raw’ spot on her neck on the back side below her ear… I am wondering if this is natural Breeding issue… everything else is fine… she eats well… plays…. And the only night I heard sounds that concerned me was the night I wised the ‘dry spray shampoo’ – so I won’t be using that again …. But there is a spot on the back of her neck that is well not RAW… but hairless and like well yes raw…. Not bleeding but red… should I separate Mango …. There are no other issues … but I KNOW Mango has tried to mate … Thanks....

This does happen when breeding. It's supposedly common, I've never seen much besides a little spit and wetness on the back/neck and roughed up fur.
If they aren't showing any outright aggression towards each other I'd think that all is well and that they can go about as they were. I'd keep an eye on them, which I'm sure you're already doing. If the spot gets worse though(bleeding), I'd consider separating her a bit until she gets through her period of estrus which may be driving this behavior.

Estrus is also commonly called to be "in heat." I have no idea how long this lasts for a glider, though.

I have a question that sort of goes along with this- so 'scuse me for butting in
How do you know they're in "estrus"?? What do you watch for?
Estrus, estrus, estrus, estrus.... such a strange word!

I usually only see the wetness at the back of the neck, but one time One of my males got to violent and actually took a chunck of skin off of the girls neck because she was trying to get away. If she accepts him usually there will be no fighting and no open wounds. Just watch and listen for fighting and seperate if you have to.
As for how to tell... I don't think there really is a way to tell unless you know when she was last in heat (saw them mating). I believe Sheila usually knows when all of her girls are in heat. One for sure way to tell is she is being mated! But they don't bleed like some other mamals do.

Well I am not a Mod or a breeder, but I have experience with Magic "shaving" the back of Abbie's head. It has happened a few times, sometimes more hair is "shaved" than others. The first time Magic bit a chunk out of Abbie's neck. You said that the "raw spot" was on the back side under her ear. Abbie's "shaved" head is usually close to her stripe, but it has been "shaved" off to one side, too. I hope some of this has helped.

never any marks or anything on Bonnie from Badger...BUT..lol we KNOW when they are mating..and it lasts app. 24 hrs. for them. He has this glazed over puppy dog in love look and follows her EVERYWHERE and doesn't want to come to me or out to play..just wants to stick right with her. If we try to pet her, he pins her down..lol He's very over protective ...and it happens always about the 5th to the 7th of the month for her. geesh..LOL

[:"green"]The best way to tell that a female is in heat is by watching the male. He will follow her, climb on her & lick her cloaca relentlessly. It normally lasts for a couple of days. The biting during mating is very common for gliders. Some males are more aggressive than others and will leave sores on the scruff of her neck, shoulder blade or off to the side under the ear - it all depends on their respective size as to where he can reach. If she gets an open sore, you should separate them for a few days to give her time to heal properly. Wait until any scab is completely gone though, because otherwise he will "groom" the scab & it won't heal as quickly. miniwidgie, Females will rub their heads on the males' scent glands as a show of submissiveness. Again, this is quite normal and some females do it more than others.

I have had several sets of joeys over the past few years, and only once did I ever have a breeding mark, lol, it looked like a big old bite to me. This was a pair that had already had one set of joeys, so of course had already breed, and I saw no marks that time. But the second time I noticed she had missing fur and open flesh on the back of her neck. I can only assume it was from breeding. After a trip to the vet, antibiotic, and good cleaning on my part, her neck healed fine. They have continued to breed and produce joeys but this has never happened again. I guess she was not wanting to participate in his idea of an activity, and he was insistant. Anyhow, as far as it being common, I don't think it is a common thing, but not rare eithor. I wouldn't freek out if I saw it, but would make sure it was taken care of by a vet. And then if this happened everytime with breeding, I'd have the male fixed. Hope that helps. As for that monthy time, I have never noticed a change in my females. But many say they notice a change in their behavior. I have noticed a change in eating habits when they are breeding. They don't eat well for a night or two, to me that is a positive sign of breeding.

Thanks everyone – I’ll take another look at it to night to see if a vet check is needed – almost time for a wellness check anyway so I might just do that a bit early..

Well I have never seen a breeder mark...until about a week ago I noticed mama bears FUR missing on her back...below the ear...I thought what can this be...as I watched it for a few days, the fur started to come back...now i see it again where she is bald negad there again...so i came on here to see if anyone else experienced this....I seen papa bear forcefully grab her and latch onto her roughly...(I felt bad...kind of like he was saying come here (censored) but he is all over her and it appears for once shes not interested....he licks her alot and she gives him heck ...but hes so much more larger then her, he over powers her I guess...But after reading on here I dont think I'd be too alarmed unless there was a bite mark, but so far I've just got poor old baldy back... but I would definately watch them...if he continues to be rough....he's going to be sitting alone for a while til her fur grows back! (maybe that will teach him!) lol..let me know how things go with you.
