A large cage was donated to me for my new "shoebox" rescue today. It is a custome made wire ferret cage that is about 2 ft X 3 Ft and 4 Ft tall. (soooo much more room than her original shoebox!) Problem is it has about five different Levels & Ramps. I'm assuming that I need to pull those out, and was wondering if I take them all out or just some. Do sugar gliders need shelves or is it best for there to be none? also is this cage going to be a suffucient size for her for now? I assume I will get her a new cage down the road but had to start fast right now.

Thanks

~ Judy

There are lots of people who have ramps in a cage for their gliders. So one or two wouldnt hurt and you do need some shelves in there to place their food on and one to place her wheel on, unless you put the wheel on the floor or attach it to the top with zipties.

What type of wire is this cage made out of? It brings a concern to me only because I know most ferret cages are made out of galvanized wire and that could be a dangerous thing for gliders, due to the cause of UTI's.
As far as size goes....sounds good. Im sure she will love it much more than the one she is in now. FOR SURE!!

Cheapest and easiest thing to use if building your own cage is the PVC coated wire mesh (found at Home Depot, $8 a roll) and PVC piping. Makes it light weight and easy to move when having to take it out for a good cleaning. A huge cage would cost about $50.00 to make. Best of Luck. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumb.gif" alt="" />

What is the bar spacing on the cage you are getting? It needs to be 1/2 inch or less, otherwise she can get out between the bars.
