Well it is looking like I may need to get new cages since the pain is chipping on my double fight cage and it is sure to rust soon if there is nothing I can do to stop it...

I am also adding to my glider family and in the process of aquiring my USDA licence. I can not find anything about cage requirements so here are some questions:

Would repts be okay?

Would the homemade "shelving cage" be okay? (Wondering b/c of the zip ties...

Would a cage with a plexiglass door be okay? Maybe framed with treated wood...

What is the minimum cage size for a trio? (I will have two trios, one non breeding)

These are some of the housing options I am considering, I want to be sure that they would be okay with the inspector before I invest in four new cages.

I guess I do not see why most of them would really be an issue. All will have to be off the floor for sure...that is pretty easy to do though. As for repts, many people use them, I do not see why USDA would be against them. The shelving cages, I guess I would wonder why zip ties would effect the USDA opinion, most of my cages are the bird cage type but they are not sturdy and have sip ties to make them secure. So long as there are no spaces fro toes to get stuck, no sharp edges I do not see why they would matter. A plexi-glass door is debatable. I personally would not use it as it will make hanging things harder (nothing can hange from the front since it is plexiglass) and also the gliders have nothing to grasp onto because it is so smooth. As for minimum requirements for a trio...not positive. Mine is in a 260...but they are spoiled too. LOL.

Well I am really thinking about building the cages with the shelving and zip ties. I saw the instructions on babylovegliders site and it looks really neat. I just wanted to be sure that it would be okay since the shelving is cut in someplaces and the zip ties are everywhere...I don't know what the regulations are, seems pretty non-specific from what I've read. I am guessing the shelving cage would be okay. I just don't want to spend 1,000 building cages to find out there is a problem. Maybe I can get in touch with someone there and find out.

I would say IMO no smaller than a 175... my trio is in a 260 rept too b/c I figured why not give them the extra room up top.

I agree with Krys, no smaller then a 175. I have two repts that do sit on the floor one because it is a 260 so pretty tall. The other is a custum with a shelf on the bottom so the gliders are not on the floor. Either way they passed. She was very interested in them and really thought they were pretty neat. I think it depends on the inspector too. I have some zip ties and nothing was said. Not a lot though so that is something you could call and ask USDA. Have you sent your paperwork in? If so when the inspector contacts you just ask.

I don't have my paperwork yet, but hopefully soon. I do have a 175 g rept I will be using until I get my new cage built. The shelving cage is 6' x 3' x 2' I think so that is plenty big.

Since you are in IL you will probably have the same inspector as I do, Ken Keirstein. He's a really nice guy and as long as your gliders are taken care of, he is happy. He has seen the mills and pathetic little cages and it really brightens his day just to find someone that actually cares about their animals and not just the money. I have all 18x30x36inch flight cages on homemade shelves and he said everything looked fantastic! I asked him if they had to be off the floor and he said that you just need to easily be able to move them for cleaning purposes.
