Is corn cob bedding ok to use for my glider? Also I was thinking, do they need bedding, or can I just place some towels at the bottom of her cage?

I should add that there is no grate at the bottom of her cage, just a pan.

Thanks

Actually, they usually prefer a pouch or nest box hung from the side of the cage to sleep in. Gliders are tree dwellers, and prefer to be as high as they can get to bed down. Corn cob bedding is not a good idea, it has dust which can cause respitory problems and in the event your glider eats it, can cause bowel impaction leading to expensive surgery and/or death. A wire bottom cage about 2-3 inches off the floor is ideal, as it allows food and feces to fall through where they cannot get to it. Since you don't have that, papertowels, puppy pads, or ink free paper can be used, but need to be changed at least every other day to keep food and feces away from your glider. Gliders will eat dropped, spoiled food if what you have offered doesn't suit them.. Newspapers, papertowels and such are good to use for the floor under the cage, when you get a good floor-type cage, but most bedding material are really not good for your glider because of the dust/respitory issue. I have heard of ppl using CareFresh and it being ok to use, but even that is dusty to a degree. Good luck, and welcome to GC!

Corn cob bedding is not good and not just because of the dust!! Don't remember just where to direct you to check it out, but there have been post about aflatoxin in corn products. One post I do remember is the one about "Bait Shop Crickets" under diet & Nutrition. It didn't deal specifically with bedding, but was about aflatoxin being present in different corn products. You might want to check that one out.

I just read a post about reptariums where they were dealing with droppings on the botton of the cage. Seems they were putting fleece on the bottom.

It would be good if you could hang a pouch in the cage for your glider to sleep in. Much more comfy than the hard bottom of a cage and safer than some of the beddings.

You can make a frame out of pvc, then put some of that plastic hardware cloth on it as a floor for the cage, that will solve the whole bedding issue. Corn cob bedding also grows the mold that causes aflotoxin poisoning, which can kill your glider.

Becky is right. I'd stick to Aspen bedding or CareFresh. I switched over to puppy pads and now I am using newspapers and switching them out twice a day, once in the a.m. and again in the p.m. I don't have a drop pan either. As long as you clean up the uneaten and flung food and the stool by switching out those things, you should be okay. I would personally not use a towel b/c their nails can caught in the terry cloth. Try fleece.

Thanks, I will stay away from it then. She's got a hammock, and I will be getting a pouch soon. I wasn't intending the bedding for sleeping purposes, just for pottying, but I will use puppy pads for now until I build her another cage. I was going to use towels, but right now her nails are too long and don't want to risk her pulling one off.

Thanks again,

~ Judy
