I have 2 babies and they have giardia. They are done with their first week of meds tomorrow. at first they did pretty good, but for the last couple of nites one doesn't want to eat. All we can feel is fur and bone. I have left numerous messages with Teresa, I know she is busy with rescues, but I don't know what to do. We have them on the Reeps diet. At first, they ate it, and now the female is not. They also took the meds ok but now it seems like she is lethargic and almost comotos for about a full half and hour.

Teresa also said that if worse came to worse there is a diet called glider mush. Avacado, egg and chicken. We wanted to know if we should give them this, as sissy feels so skinny. (she hadn't gained any weight since 7/14 per vet. and sosmos has lost 4 grams.
I have already had one die. I have never been put in this situation of caring for an animal and have it die. I know that I will never be able to get over that and if these two die, I won't be able to live with myself.
I know that sounds extreme, but it's the truth

If they're not eating - try the glider mush! It's worth a shot.

Have they seen a vet since they stopped eating?

I realize this is the weekend but if at all possible, these need to get back in to see a vet as quickly as possible. More than likely they are severely dehydrated.

Also, try calling Mary Holcombe
(979) 478-7546

She is most always at home and should be able to help.

Don't forget. A vet is going to be your best option.

I'm sorry I haven't been available. LONG story...skin kid issues...

These gliders need to eat. I'm going to suggest that you put them on BML. Do exactly like Bourbon has suggested to you with them. Also, do you know how to check them for dehydration?

Gently pinch the skin at their shoulders like you would if you were scruffing a cat. GENTLY pull it up and let it go. If it stays UP like a "tent" or only goes back down very slowly, then they are dehydrated. If this is the case, they will need sub-q injections (best done by a vet unless you have been taught by a vet to do it).

Keep giving them pedialyte. Also, you might need to force feed them. Put some food in a needless syringe and see if you can get them to eat that way.

The meds they have been on is going to lessen their appitite some.

larry just left to hy-vee to get the avacado. i had the stuff already, but when i was told just the reep's, i ate the avacado. i did give sissie about 1/2 hr ago, thru a syringe 2cc of reep's. i cut it with the milk replacer& apple juice to make it runnier. she did eat it, of which i am so greatfull for. i will stay up all nite & feed them both this, as i put the reep's in for cosmos, & he went to it, & walked away from it.i will do the tent test, but i really don't know how good i will be able to tell. i couldn't do this several nites ago, cosmos HATES being held & sissie moved around too much. if i can't do it, i will have larry try it also. they do have a clinic in des moines, which is about 40miles south of us, so we wouldn't have to drive far, but the last time i called there, there was no one to help me with gliders on @ that time. that was when i was trying to get help for gizmo, & i didn't even know any of you even existed. i'm so sorry for taking you away from your work, i know there are a lot more out there than just me you have to deal with, but i DO THANK YOU

Have you been able to tell if they are dehydrated?
If you need to talk to someone please feel free to give me a call. 620-382-3228
Right now the most important thing is to make sure that they both are getting plenty of fluids.
Please try and not be hard on yourself sweetie, you are doing the best that you can do. We are all here to help...many hugs and prayers.

Once your husband gets back, you can help each other to do the tent test. It's important to get fluids in them. Like T said, the meds do lessen the appetite. One thing I did when I had 2 w/giardia was to put a smidge of flavored yogurt on the end of the needleless syringe to encourage them to eat. It helped me. Definitely need to get back to the vet.

I am so sorry that you are going through this. When I got my first glider she came to me underage-underweight and with Giardia... she almost didn't make it so I know what you are going through. I have an excelent vet fortunatly who helped us out so much. Pedialite may help if they are dehydrated or even if they aren't mine seem to like the apple flavor you could always try it in like a baby dropper just to be sure they are getting enough fluids. The thing I remember (and this was back in Feb) was the medicine made her especially tired and lethargic. It was awful! What diet do you normally feed your gliders? This is when I ended up switching mine to the BML and she really liked it so maybe that will also help? If you need anything at all please PM me and I will do my best to help.... although I admit there are many way more experienced people here I have been in the same boat as you so even if you need to just talk I am here!

well, cosmos is going to town on the glider mush. he's eating like this is his 1st time ever to eat. sissie took a little bit more coaxing, because i had already given her 2cc of reep's cut w/milk replacement. she is drinking the pedialite from another syringe. we did do the tent test, & as i mentioned earlier, it was hard for me to tell, since she is so skinny, but my husband felt that it went back down ok.
i thank you all for coming to my babies rescue. i feel so sorry for them, larry & i felt we did enough study-ing before we got them. boy, were we wrong.
i will continue to stay up throughout the nite, i want to be able to keep mine.

i hope that when we get our kids well, we would @ that time completely bonded. we were still struggling w/that. sissie is real easy to take out of the special pouch now for the protector type. she wasn't like that anyway. we needed to get it for cosmos. he was big time! he still crabs, but i know that w/everything that he's going thru, it will take him time to get used to everything.

goodmorning?!!!
by alittle after 3 all 4 of us were really tired. sissie spent most of the nite w/me in a pouch, she was forced more to eat/drink than she did willingly, but we have been able to get stuff in her. we did it all, piedialite(sp), crack, reep's. at one point, we mixed alittle bit of all of it together, i also had some replacement mik from suncoast (lisa), & we added that in. cosmos suffered the most(he HATES being held, & he has always bit SO hard. i have so many little noduals on my thumb & fingers, but then, who am i talking to? some of the ones that are on yours are probably there for life, huh!!!! the back of the neck isn't "snapping" back too fast, but then it seems to be doing it well enough for my husband. we put cosmos back in the cage, & he went rite for the bottle w/nothing but the pedialite in it. the second one is cut, 1/2 spring water,& 1/2 pedialite. this week has been so hard on my little babies, i don't know how we are going to survive 5 more weeks of this! the thought is a nitemare! the hope i have will be that they will be healed, & we will have become totally bonded, but for rite now, they are not likeing us too well. for the whole week, we gave up tent time because we felt we needed to give them time for themselves, we only had them out for about an hour each nite, during med. time, so they have been left alone, on their own, since they were so sick. i know cosmos loved this, as the less we do w/him, the happier he seems to be.
all this week, i have been on other sites, & so many were excited because they were becoming "grandparents", & i am really so happy for them, but i couldn't help but cry, because they are celebrating life & i am trying to keep life going. i always have so much to say, i have so many thoughts & feelings, there are several who have gotten used to having to sit down @ the computer & read like this quite abit. my feelings have been dashed so badly since alittle befor 7-14, when sissies brother gizmo died, & i don't want to have these 2 die, also.
larry & i will be sure to keep them busy all day, by pushing pedialite & food down them about every 2 to 3 hrs. today. my babies are asleep, now, so hopefully, they will do beter once they have slept for awhile. they still have 2(?) nites of meds to take, if we count 7 on & 7 off.
momday to monday, rite?
& once again, i do say thank you for being here for my babbies.
josefine

As long as they are eating and drinking on their own, try and allow them ample amount of time to sleep. Gliders generally do not get up during the daytime to eat.
If you could provide us with a little more background history as to when all of these problems started, this will help with understanding more on what to assist you in doing.
What was the cause of sissy's brother passing?
How long have you had your gliders?

giardia is notoriously hard to get rid of in all animals. My friends dog has been on medication for three months and can't shake it. I'm glad to here they are starting to eat on their own. Hopefully your vet will have some more advice in regards to getting weight on them.

I, too, thought it sounded like she was doing much better. Please do get Cosmo to the vet tomorrow morning. With 7 days of metro under your belt, I suspect that there may be something else going on. Hopefully, the vet can get to the bottom of it and quick.

Be sure to tell Josephine that we are thinking of her. She is welcome to call me any time.

I'm so very, very sorry for your loss.

So sorry you lost your little one. Giardia is not an easy thing to deal with at all.

I see you are from Iowa, did you just recently get these two and if so was it from Perfect Pocket Pets at the fair? I know of someone else who had some issues is the reason I ask.

I've been following this post, too, and you've been getting wonderful advice. I'm so sorry you lost your baby girl! You have a good chance with Cosmos, just keep following the great advice you are getting and don't give up!

In 2003 all 13 of my gliders and myself picked up giardia traveling to or from the KC SGGA. I had to treat my triplets who were only 3wks OOP by the time we figured it out. I made a mistake on the dosage and was giving them .1cc instead of .01cc/g. It didn't kill them, thank goodness, and it was corrected after about 3 days (because I ran out too soon).I was embarrassed at my carelessness, and worried about liver damage from overdosing them, but it all worked out. Needless to say, I haven't made that mistake again, and they have all been giardia free since treating them the first time.

Just keep up the good "parenting", and don't give up. Keep him hydrated and eating. I feed mine BML and attribute it with keeping my gliders healthy through many crises, including that one! Please keep us posted.

i haven't spoken w/larry yet, but i really can't do this i know that this is not what jehovah god had intended to happen. once i get cosmos well, i hope to get him w/someone who can give him a good, normal, long life, & to be able to die of old age. we have a real nice 4ft cage, so many toys(because i was spoiling them, i had to get almost everything i could find for them). i have tons of food, also, because i bought so much that is on the market for them, including stuff that they probably wouldn't have eaten, so i was told by tammy & bourbon, after the fact, because i had already ordered the stuff. i can't believe that exotic nutrition would put food the giders wouldn't eat in the glider section, but well, they evidently have $signs in their eyes, just to get extra money from us.
anyway, i really do thank you for reading my posts, just taking the time to read them has ment everything to me

Josefine, I can only imagine how you feel right now, but PLEASE don't give Cosmos up and stop being a glider mom - we need people like you in the glider community!!! Please talk to some people who have lost gliders and let them tell you - it will get better and you can move forward from here - don't give up!! This has been terrible for you, but you have learned so much that you can use to help someone else down the road and maybe save another glider's life some day!

Josefine is at the vet's office with Cosmos right now. Please keep him in your prayers. His weight is down even more and he's dehydrated. Dr. Culver is going to give him sub-q fluids and is waiting for a call back from Dr. Tristan for consultation worried
