This is a pet peeve of mine. Please, read it. A piece of fleece will not warm a glider up. It will only help hold heat in. It is an insulator. Insulation does not CREATE heat. Please, when a glider is ill, and you tell someone to wrap the glider in fleece "to keep" them warm, that is incorrect. If the glider is cold, it has to be warmed. I know this is nit picky, but a person in panic mode isn't going to do this thinking. We have to do it for them.

How CAN you keep a glider warm then? So If it happens I can tell someone. Or, if it happens to me, I'll know what to do!

You can warm the fleece in the microwave and then wrap the glider and put them in your shirt - next to your skin.
You can use a heating pad.
You can use one of those heating pads that have rice in them that you heat in the microwave.
When using a microwave, be sure not to get anything too hot.
Best way is to put them right next to your skin and keep them covered.

Thank you!
I was recently 'babysitting' a little squirrel, and put rice in a sock and warmed it up and he loved that. Can that work for a glider, too? Make a home made one, basically, if someone doesnt have a heating pad?

No socks for gliders. You should pop them in your bra.

You can still put them in your shirt, or in your hand or on your belly, or whatever...So, male/female doesn't matter. A fleece sock should be fine. You just need to watch for loops that toenails can get caught on.

Agreed. ^-^ It's funny how some people just assume it'll magically warm them up right away and you don't need anything else. I realized that after I made my double layered no-sew fleece blanket last winter. I get so cold that my lips turn blue and my nails go purple-blue in anything under 75 and I'm practically having to do jumping jacks with the fleece blanket and then wrap up in it to keep warm. It's sooo amazing at keeping body heat in.

Just a reminder with heating pads, though, they can get really hot, so never put a glider straight on a heating pad, always use fleece or a towel between the pad and the glider. The best course of action is to put the glider against your skin first until you get something to an appropriate temperature and always test it on your forearm first - if it seems too hot, it probably is.

Thank you for the reminder. Just want to be prepared! Who knows what could happen, i've read about some odd situations they get into. I'll make it/buy one and never use it, but i'd rather have it on hand even if i never need it. Thanks sugarlope!

Fleece socks made of actual fleece are OK, but expensive. I'ts cheaper to make a fleece pouch.
Socks that feel like fleece are still knit, and their toes can easily get caught.

Yup, yup, yup (that is really hard to type, btw!) Thanks to all who responded. I do have to apologize, I was in a horrible mood when I posted this. It needed to be said, but I could have been nicer! LOL You guys all got what I was saying, though, and that is the important part. Fleece or any other insulator won't warm anything.

Sugeebaby had a wonderful thing that either she made or got a while back. It was a square fleece pillow full of rice, then had another layer of fleece that was open at one end with a "pocket" to put a sick/injured glider in. The concept was to pop it in the microwave for 30 seconds, then snuggle the glider into the pocket part to stay warm. There was discussion about adding that to the emergency kits that TGI was selling...don't know if that ever got off ground level or not.

Denise, I may be remembering incorrectly, but I believe it was actually Shawna/USMom who came up with that to begin with It is a great concept

I just use my body heat. I'm afraid I'll get anything else too hot!

It WAS Shawna that came up with those rice pillow bed thingies. They are AMAZING and I think everyone should have one. So, lets all just start bombarding Shawna with requests for them. LOL I am JUST KIDDING - don't you all go do that, Shawna will kill me.... and then a few little suggies would be very sad and stressed. I think Shawna's point was not that we should not say to use fleece, just that when someone is in a panic, they need to be told what comes naturally to some of us. Often times, people come here for the first time when they are in crisis. At those times, they may not be thinking clearly. We just need to say "wrap them in a piece of fleece and stick them in your shirt next to your skin." or whatever method you are going to advise for warming a glider. That Shawna....... she's a genius!
