Downsizing a Cage? #63372

Okay, I have a large cage that measures 3 wide, 2.5 deep and 5 tall, but it's galvanized (I know I know). I made it before I knew it was bad and have only had it for about 3 months. I haven't had aby problems with it yet, but don't want to risk it. I'm thinking about getting a new one for them for Christmas, but don't want a Reptarium b/c I don't know if Star would chew it. She chews everything else. LOL

Would it be bad to downgrade to a flight cage? This would be much smaller than what they have, but the benefits would be: drop tray, not galvanized metal, etc.

Currently, the daily cleanings are getting to me. I steam the entire cage and wipe down with vinegar/water. I clean the tray once or twice a day depending on how nasty it is. I want something that is less time consuming b/c time is something that I am beginning not to have especially for cage cleaning every day. I'd like to spend the time on cage cleanings with my babies in the tent.

Oh yeah, and I have to get another cage for my 2 joeys so that means that I have to make room for another cage. So 3 in one and 2 in the other. The joeys are in an incubator right now, but will be going into a cage sooner or later.

I was thinking about poking around in some catalogues at work (pet store) and seeing what I could get as far as what I can afford for 2 cages and what is the best for my suggies.

Any advice or suggestions? I know bigger is always better, but the only thing bigger than my cage would be a custom cage or Reptarium, which I don't want either. Remember, I have to make room for another cage for the joeys.

Thank you!!!

You should do the 3 cage deal. There is a post about it on here somewhere. You get 3, 30x18x55 flight cages for $140. That's the cheapest set of big cages that you are going to find. I know you only need 2 but it is always a good thing to have an extra cage lying around. It shouldn't be a problem down grading, I had to do the same thing with one of my pairs and they are still happy. The 3 cage deal is threw ebaby if you can't find it. I too lazy to go look up the link, hehe, sorry.

Thanks! I really don't like Ebay though... I get cages at cost at work and want one with stands so I can clean under them. I actually have an extra cage just in case something happens so the 3rd one would sit in our already cramped storage closet. LOL

If all else fails, I will look into that. Thanks!!! I'm guessing a lot of people like this deal?

I actually heard of some people having some shipping issues with this guy and the cages came all bent. Any one have these? Any feedback would be great.

Ellen has chewers too so she can't use the reps either. She uses pvc cages insted/ It might be stressful and cause depression if you put them in much smaller cage. Dpwnsizing a littlr would be ok.

Okay, I looked at them and they look decent. I contacted the guy to see if he will have them availible in December. Right now I have to pay for Ben's birthday present which is going to be super mondo expensive and other things like rent, bills, etc. I hate living on my own. LOL

Gliderdad, I don't want to downsize a lot... Just a little bit. If I get the lot of 3 on Ebay, they are about the same measurements, just not as deep. That would be helpful so that I can put 2 cages kind of near each other. I need all the room I can get at this point. LOL I know it might cause stress and depression, but 'am trying to find the best cages that would not be too much of a downsize. Thanks.

It was a different ebay shipper that had all the problems, this guy is great. The one with all the problems had the $89 cages on the stand.

Got it. Thanks for the heads up b/c I was actually looking at his stuff just now. LOL

I guess the 3 cages for 140 is the best deal... I appreciate it.

[:"green"]Downsizing your cage shouldn't be too bad since you don't want to make a drastic change. I use cockatiel cages for my gliders with no problem.

So how many cages do you actually need to get? One to replace your galvanized cage & then one for the joeys?

I kind of like this cage... it's on ebay but you'll get the idea- then you could probably order it from work if you decided you want one.

Christina,
I wouldn't swear to it, but it seems to me when I was reading about cages some time back there was someone who bought the three cage deal from ebay and put two of them together to make a bigger cage. It would make a pretty big cage and you could use the third one for the joeys.

I had to do the same thing… we built the first cage, with wood and the galvanized wire not knowing enough… then I Found GC and realized that it could cause health problems… so I started searching for the biggest and best … I would up getting the hexagonal cage from SunCoast… it is a bit pricy but it was the one I wanted, and since I do not planning on adding any cages soon it works for me…. I have not noticed any problems with the downsizing… as long as they still get their out of cage time and you are not got to the extreme I think they will be fine….

I actually talked to my manager today and she is getting me 2 larger flight cages with 1/2" bar spacings that is normally used for a cockatiel, conure, or parrot. I think it will be good for them and since I am downsizing, I am going to have the tent set up all the time so they can have more tent time than they are getting now.

I know that most of you think that it will not be good enough, but I am up till about 3:30am and they will get plenty of exercise, my promise.

Lynsie, I REALLY like that cage! It looks so nice! The only problem is, I don't have $300 to spend on 2 of them. I will def. keep it in mind for when I get out of college and have more money and space. I appreciate it.

Are you talking about the cage I showed you? The one Lynsie found was the 3 for $140 deal I think.

I think the cage I have for Jupiter is considered a flight cage. It's kind of like the one in the picture I linked to on ebay....

If it is a flight cage then I really like flight cages!! It's so nice & I think it's pretty roomy!

No, it was not that one. I am getting 2 from work b/c I:
a). don't want to pay shipping
b). don't need 3
c). don't have any room in storage for the 3rd

I did however take a look at it and it was a great deal, but since work can get some cheaper and I don't get charged shipping, it will work out to about $30.00 per cage.

For those of you who have 3 gliders in one cage, how big is your cage? May I have your dimensions? I just want to get a rough idea as to what you use so I can see what is appropriate. I'm used to dealing with one at a time.

I have four in a cage that's 36"x19"x19" but two are really really tiny and they're going to new homes when they're old enough. Plus my other cage hasn't gotten here yet so this probably does you no good .

Right now I have 4 in a 2x2x5' cage... 2 of them will be going to new homes soon though. As for now it seems like everyone has enough room.
