A behavioral query quickly turned into an emergency last night, and I had to rush Riker down to the city & the Emergency vet we saw last time.{GREAT GUY!-although he doesn't have a lot of experience with gliders/he's seen Riker twice and a few others/he is willing to learn, to consult with other vets, has good education, and is more than willing to listen,perform asked for tests,etc. and take as much time as both animal and owner need-always putting the animal first. Very caring. He gave me permission to add him to the database here-they are open all night M-Sat, and all day Sunday-all the times other vets aren't! Someone please let me know how to get him listed-he has all the qualities a good vet should![[Dr.Darin Emch DVM, PET E.R., SLC, UT.]]}
Back to Riker: His "flossing" with the crab/hiss escalated yesterday and he was trying to CHEW his penis and cloacal area--HARD. I've been 'round the clock w/him to prevent this as all attempts at an e-collar have failed.I have to put my hand in the way and my fingers are feeling it. The vet ran a fecal smear, urinalysis, and took a swab of the cloacal area to test. Riker seems to be unable to retract his penis since yesterday(?)AM, and I'm putting K-Y 3-4 times a day. The tests came back with both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria in the fecal, and an unusually high amount of gram-negative bacteria in the urinalysis. Cloacal swab results were good.He weighed in at a fantastic 70 grams. They performed cytology, Gram, and Wright stains.
Riker is on a 7-day course of Enrofloxacin (Baytril).1 ML twice daily, Butorphanol 1 MG/ML in Val Syrup .04 ML 3x per day for pain. His symptoms are very slightly improved today-I had a hard time w/him between one dose of painkiller giving out and the next kicking in. Does anyone have an idea to save my fingers? (and let me get some sleep?).Riker is 4 mos. 13 days OOP by best estimation.
Anyhow, I'll keep you guys updated as to his progress. {Guess it'll be another couple months for the Season 6 X-Files DVD's-that's ok-Riker is worth every penny to me! )
Also-his new girlfriend, Troi, will be ready to come home on May 10th!

I'd also appreciate any insight as to what might have caused/precipitated this? I keep his pcage/pouches/dishes clean & disinfected; he has a pvc-coated cage, and he drinks bottled spring water that I use even to wash his fruits/veggies and make his gliderade.

I have no advice to give, because I haven't any experience with this, but I'm so sorry that this has happened to you and Riker!! I hope it remedies itself soon!

You just aren't catching a break with Riker are you?! I am sorry to about this. I really don't know what to say either since I have never had any problems with my , but please keep us posted on how he is doing.

As the why of the UTI, etc, it's hard to tell. Sometimes you need to know the bacteria, it could be as simple as one day he didn't drink enough water. or he got some bacteria in there and it bloomed! Suggestions on the hands, and saving them, use a wooden perch stick instead instead of your hands to put between his mouth and give him something more satisfying to bite on! You could also use a leather glove on the hand he is biting, and ONLY on that hand and ONLY for the duration of the biting. Gloves are strongly discouraged with gliders as it only hinders bonding. In some rare cases, they can be useful. I hope little Ryker is soon feeling his onery self!

Thanks, Chey, I didn't think of that! Bourbon helped tho, and now he's in a collar. (Absolutely hates it!). I'll remember that, though, for (knock on wood) future reference!

Now I need to know how to add a vet to the vet database. I can't seem to figure it out.

Glad you got an e-collar to stay on him - and I'm sooo glad you got him to the vet on time! The little guy has really been through a lot, hasn't he?

As for why, I can only venture a guess... maybe since he's been flossing a lot, the saliva combined with other things (little food bits, etc) may have caused the UTI. I don't think it could have been preventable... sometimes those things just happen. It's just good that you caught his change in behavior in time to stop him from doing permanent damage to himself. I hope your fingers heal in time!

Thanks, Toni. I actually managed to keep him from doing any damage with his teeth, but you should see my hands! I'd like to send an award to the person who invented Betadine solution. It's great at preventing infection in bites, scratches, cuts, etc. and they actually heal faster.

I hope your little guy is doing better. Has his penis retracted yet? I had a male that had a UTI we got him over that and later lost him to a liver problem but I don't think it was related to the UTI thing. More likely having to do with his previous family giving him cat food and unlimited supply of peanuts. your vet sounds awesome. The one I had been using at first didn't think Snoopy could have a UTI and wouldn't test for it, the second time I brought him in that week for vomiting I flat out told her I wanted it run and it was positive, I wish I'd been more assertive in the first place. Never be afraid to go with your instincts. Hope he makes a speedy recovery.

just for reference...

A normal UTI doesn't usually cause these symptoms, I have talked with Jen to a great extent as to what the end prognosis is. but we are not giving up in prayers, treatments, or care. We all hope that the meds will take care of this. if not, then Riker may have a very long hard road ahead of him, as will Jen.

some of the things to remember regarding Riker, that makes him a high risk glider is that he was a hand pulled joey, he also was diagnosed with HLP at a very young age. So his immune system is already compromised. For him to fight off the smallest infection is a huge fight for him.

e stay on this, keep the collar on till you feel safe to remove it, it will be awhile after the healing before I would chance it, but be prepared to replace it as well.

Good luck to you, my love and prayers to you and Riker. (BTW I need you fill out the questionaire)
