my girlfriend and i bought 2 female gliders a while back and the people we got them from said they had a third but he escaped a few days before, so we dont know if it was a male or female. we have had them for about a month now and all the progress we had made with them is great in bonding and such, but now one female is completely to herself and shes kinda been mean lately not wanting anyone near her and it may be our imagination but she seems to be getting bigger but we cant pick her up to check her stomach. we leave the cage open while we are playing with the others so that she can come out with us if she wants. when shes on the top of the cage stacy (girlfriend) said her stomach looked kinda "poochy" whatever that means. i would love some input about timelength in pouch to develop and see something there..well i want all the info you all have to offer... it would be greatly appreciated... and i will try to get a picture of her stomach here tonight or tomorrow morning.

[:"green"]She probably has at least one joey in pouch from the sounds of it. Females will lick their pouch a lot once they have joeys in pouch. They're actually cleaning the joey. There's a great post at the top of the "Breeding & Babies" page about joey development. I suggest you look at it...

I still think you should check out that post.

It has lots of great information and pictures. Besides- you'll probably want to keep referencing it as you go along since it's such a great guide. It's broken down week by week, before and after they come out of pouch.

You could start seeing a dark spot or lump as soon as 2 weeks IP... so it's hard to tell It also would be useful to know how big the lump is.

Last night she was in her little hammock thing by herself cleaning here pouch for like 10 or 15 minutes. it seems like the bump there is like size of a small grape, and stacy says the pouch "hole" is as big as the tip of her pinky finger

Whatever you do, just be advised that with a grape sized joey in pouch, it is crucial that you do not disturb it. Picking up the female mommy may dislodge the joey from her teat and then it would surely pass away. It is probably 2 to possibly 4 weeks In Pouch (IP) so you really do need to read up on caring for an expectant mommy sugar glider. I highly reccommend you do this prior to bothering the mom. Also, you need to feed the mommy extra proteins duirng her IP pregnancy. You have a ways to go before you will see any sign of it coming out. Not to sound fussy or anything, but I have a friend who did want to see the joeys that her female produced, and with that she called me at an odd hour one night and said she had found one dead in the cage and a few days later, the other dead. Whether it was too young or not, it's just too delicate a matter to bother the mommies or put scents on the joeys and chance loosing him/her. Nevertheless, I just offered this small tale to save you from disturbing the little one before you do and it have adverse effects on you and your female glider.

Thanks very much for this info! We weren't expecting this at all! We were going to breed them but we were waiting for Chronus to mature! I guess there was a male before we got them! Oh well, another baby! Wahhooo! :-)

What happens when a joey is born, they climb into the pouch and go to the teat. The teat than swells. At this age up till they are ready to come oop, thier jaw muscles arent strong. The swelling of the teat is what keeps a joey on. So by not handling them carefully, you risk nocking the joey off the teat, which means they can't get back on and will die like what happened with your friend.

It's ok to let here run around, its just if you are holding them and she tries squirming away is were the risk is.

Yep, you'll do fine with her and she will let you know boundaries. You have great support here, so you are very lucky. I was just letting you know what happened to my friend, but the good news....she is expecting more joeys and I am going to help her, so she should do better on the second round (actually I will be picking the entire family up). It's just so sad when people are either: uninformed, and do not reseach to find out what is best OR they have been advised and choose to not listen. Just a very sad story. I saw it coming but could not really do much about it. Then of course it was way too late by the time they told me. I will be placing her pair in my home for the duration of the pregnancy, picking them up this week-end. This is another rescue operation I'm afraid. I will be keeping you all updated, I have already been asked to keep them, but we'll see. Probably best for them if I do. Just have a little Operation Neuter to work out!
