First of all: THANK YOU, BOURBON!-for all of your invaluable advice! We got the collar on, and Riker is tolerating it. He climbed around his cage last night and can even maneuver around on me (with the collar on, his favorite place on me now is on my shoulder snuggled against my neck -it tickles when his tail wraps around!). Anyway, seeing some improvement today w/the UTI symptoms. He isn't reacting as violently when he urinates or defecates, and is accepting the vit.e oil to keep his penis from drying out much better-like it doesn't hurt him as much as it did. He has also very nearly retracted it all the way inside today, though not completely. I made him a pouch for when he's with me during the day out of my detachable jacket hood-plenty of room to accommodate the collar and lined in flannel-he loves it. I'm feeding him the BML by syringe-he'll eat his yogurt from a plastic spoon, and his apple juice, water, etc. from the bird waterers on his own. He'll also accept some baby fruit from ny finger as a licky treat. Although his sleep is spread out around the clock off and on, he is sleeping. His favorite position in the collar seems to be on his back-it appears to be most comfortable for him. Making progress, slowly. I'll take him back to the vet if I have to for a longer dose of antibiotics if necessary-I started with a 7 day course, but 10 is a poss.
I guess I should clarify: Riker is in an e-collar because he started trying to mutilate himself when this infection began to hurt him. Instead, I let him bite me until we could get a collar to stay on. My husband and I are thinking of neutering (after he's well) and info would be appreciated on that. Exactly what is done when a suggie is neutered, and what removed? How old does he need to be before having it done? Any advice or knowledge appreciated.(He is 41/2 mos. old now)
Also, I have to fly to Texas on May 10 or 11 for a surgery evaluation at the Texas Back Institute. Riker will be coming with me. I need to find a small carrier to fit under the airline seat, hopefully not too expensive, and I need to have it shipped and here before the 10th. (I know-reaching for the moon). Any suggestions?
Thanks, everyone!

hmm, I guess I should've read this one first before I posted on the last one... I was assuming there would be an update in the original post..

I am glad that he seems to be doing better...

As for the cage for the plane.. there was a thread on here somewhere about plane trips.. I think in glider travels so you might want to check that thread out.

I am so glad Riker is doing better. I don't know what to suggest for the plane trip though. I have seen some small hamster or chinchilla carriers, but I don't know if those would work. What about a small dog crate? Is it just for the plane trip or are you wanting a travel cage also?

PetCo and Pet Quarters both carry a great carrier for gliders under 25 dollars Airline approved it's called a Cabin Kennel. When I used one to bring Quinn home from NC Chey suggested using a "critter keeper" as well available at Walmart. The critter keeper is like a short plastic aquarium long and flat put this inside the cabin kennel it helps to keep little paws from coming out of the carrier. Be preparred to have to take him out of the carrier in a pouch so they can scan him with a wand. At least they made me with Quinn. Also you will need a certificate from your vet for most of the airlines I know of. Good luck and glad to hear he is doing better. also check with the airline if they will let you bring him on the plane. US Air wouldn't let me but wonderful, wonderful Delta welcomes suggies.

Delta...is the only airline to let a glider carrier inside the cabin that I know of for sure. Fee is $75 one way. Other airlines...one has to ship the glider in the carrier in a pet compartment in the hold of the plane. It is temp. and pressure controled. Cost is $100.

Health Certificate when shipping through the airline is only good for a 10 day period even though it is good for 30 days going by other means. So...if your destination is longer than that period...you will need to have the animal vet checked in that area befor boarding return flight.

Cargo carriers are great. I use them all the time. With the plastic critter carrier inside the Cargo Carrier...make sure you secure it into place with rolled newspaper so it will not shift around inside the Cargo Carrier.

So good to hear about your little guy doing better. UTI's seem to be more common in the males. From what I have observered with gliders....this chewing seems to be common when a glider is constipated or has a UTI.

As to the neutering proceedure....vet will snip and tie the vas tubes(2 of them along with a vein). To close the incision some will glue it,stitch it or just leave it open. Some vets remove the Pom or leave it. Method depends on method the vet prefers. Whoever does the method...make sure they use Isoflorin gas during the proceedure and followed with pain management of Torb after the surgery for 24 to 36 hours. This can be done at home with Torb in a suspension or injected.

Thanks, bourbon-I have no intention of even trying to remove the collar until I have NO DOUBTS he's better. I also filled out the questionnaire a couple of days ago, so that's done. His penis is almost completely retracted most of the time, and even all the way a few times! The symptoms when he pees improve a small amount daily, but they
're not gone yet. Except when peeing he's just the sweetest little thing you'd ever want to know.We glider-proofed the entire house for him, and he has a blast running just everywhere!
Side note: I guess I didn't prevent all damage-he has a tiny scab on the very end of one penis-not bad, mind you, but there nonetheless. Could be responsible for some of the lingering symptoms. We'll see what happens when it's completely healed-but everything is normally colored, so I don't think there's any necrosis.
Please forgive me if I'm not around for awhile-going to TX from the 10th - 14th for a surgery evaluation. Anyone who prays, please send some Riker's way-it breaks my heart to see him in that collar esp. how much he hates it. Hope y'all have a good and uneventful week! Thanks so much for everyone's help and support. It means more than you could ever know!

Glad to hear he is doing better. Good luck with your appt. Give him some extra loving, it's amazing how forgiving these guys can be. A few extra treats wouldn't hurt in that area either.
I agree that males seem to get more UTI's I wonder if the insatiable need to mark everything has something to do with it.
