Earlier tonight, at about 5-5:15, as we were starting to watch a movie, Lord of the Rings, and noticed that one of our gliders, Trixie, climbed out of the pouch and went straight for the water bottle. My youngest daughter, Lauren, told me that she could hear Trixie breathing hard. I immediately got up and took Trixie out and looked at her closely. Trixie then threw up the clear vomit from water and had some greenish diarrhea. Much to my shock, I discovered that she was yellow! I immediately knew that she was having liver problems. I checked the other two, Pixie and Bullet, for the same symptoms and they weren't affected. My husband, Mark, called for the vet and we left right away. When we got there, of course, we had to wait and wait but the vet, Dr. Duffy, told us that he wasn't that knowledgable about SG's. There was another vet there who was knowledgable but he was busy with another animal. Dr. Duffy asked me a bunch of questions and I told him I had been feeding her BML and fresh fruits and vegetables, and some chicken for protein. He asked me about BML and I thought, Geez! I gave him the website to GliderCENTRAL and Dr. Duffy told the other vet about the BML and he was familiar with it, that it was good that Trixie had been eating BML. To make the long story short, Dr. Duffy took Trixie to the back and drew some blood and gave her an injection and left some amoxicillin and a syringe with me. He said he had just given her a dose of amoxicillin and that I was supposed to give her a second dose in the morning, every 12 hours for the next 14 days. After this dose of amoxicillin, I noticed that Trixie was turning a little bit more pink! I am keeping my fingers crossed that she will return to good health. As of right now, she is sleeping in my bra.

I am setting up a reptarium for Trixie in our office, so I can keep close tabs on her while I am on the computer all night tonight, as I have to work the next two nights.

Is there anything else I should do or know about? Any suggestions would be more than welcome! I love this baby, as well as my other six!

Jennifer,

When Lucy's glider Gladys had these symptoms, giardia was the culprit. Do you know if your vet checked for it. I'm not sure the medication that was prescribed, but you may want to e-mail Lucy to find out more info. Hopefully she will log on soon and be able to help you here.

Forgot to add, if you have already seen the vet, you should be alright for tonight. Gladys main problem was keeping hydrated, so be sure to be on the look out for that.

Just now, Trixie just had a teeny tiny bit of solid poop and then alot of diarrhea followed. It was dark brown. Is it good or bad?

Should I feed her as normal or is there anything that I should give her to help solidify her diarrhea?

Be sure to keep her hydrated... gliderade, fruit juice, applesauce, or pedialyte if necessary. I don't think there is anything to feed to solidify the diarrhea, you need to fix the problem (well, you are on your way to fixing the problem) and the symptoms will go away.

I hope she gets better soon!

Tomorrow morning...call your vet and ask if he did a saline slide or float on the fecal matter of your glider to check for protozoa. May want to have your other gliders checked as well. No need to take them in just collect samples from each one and put in seperate baggies for each with name of glider on it. If one glider is positive then treat all the gliders due to cross contamination. Flagyl is med most desired if this is a protozoa problem.

For tonight...keep her well hydrated. Early morning get her to the vet for move fluids under the skin. If this is going to be a long illness....sugest you have your vet teach you how to inject fluids under her skin especially if you are having a hard time hydrating her. When dehydrated....fluids will reabsorb rather quickly in a matter of a few hours. Too costly to go back and forth to vet....have him draw up 10 needles or so or have him give you a bottle of fluids and clean needles to draw up your own.

Keep her warm....if the other glider will not stay with her then you will need to keep her in a pouch and on your body or you can set up a hospital tank with an aquarium and a heating pad on low only under half of it. Put something to sleep in...I have used Aspen with a depth of 4 inches. Glider can burrow as deep as she wants to keep warm.

Will keep you in my prayers...and wishing a speedy recovery.

Judie and I have been IM'ing and she told me to get some Pedialyte. So I left to get some of the Pedialyte and mixed some with Gliderade in place of water. Trixie is now drinking some of that mixture and is now peeing clear. Just about an hour ago, she left a teeny tiny solid poop, which is a good sign, I think. Just an update to let you all know how she is doing.

An update: I had been up all night long, waking Trixie up every hour to drink some Gliderade/Pedialyte and noticed that her feces have become more and more formed, though still very soft. Right now, she is sleeping in a towel on my lap. She is such an angel, such a good baby!

PixTrix, I have learned that there's a difference between "yellow" and "sallow" -- Gladys isn't "yellow" from her giardia as much as she is less pink with a tinge of yellowish. I know that seems like a minute point, but for Gladys, it was significant. I'm going to post a picture taken the night before the SGGA to show the difference.

You'll see Gladys on the left, and her coloring is kind of salmon colored. Reepicheep has a great pink color. I think if it had been liver problems, the yellow would have been a more "sickly" yellow.

I so hope things are okay. Please keep us posted!

Well, first of all, let me say that I was very disappointed with the vet's results. I told the vet to my best knowledge of what happened last night and all the vet told me was that Trixie had liver problems, which I already knew. I asked about the saline slide or float on the fecal matter to check for protozoa, and they didn't do it. I also asked about the possibility about Giardia and they didn't check for it, either. Grrrr! All they showed me was how to feed her some lactulose syrup along with amoxicillin and how to forcefeed canned CAT FOOD for extra calories. Cat food?!?!?! I refused to give her that. This is all they told me! Geez! I am very upset with this vet, no offense to TreesGliders. This was not Dr. Ruch that Trixie saw.

Lucy, that picture of Gladys came close to what Trixie looked like, only that Trixie was more yellow than salmon color. Thank you for posting that picture for me to compare. I appreciate your thoughtfulness.

Everyone else, thank you for pulling for me! I had been up all night and I am still up now, for 24 hours. I was scheduled to work tonight and I called out of work so I could care for my baby better.

No offense taken. I just called the vet. Check you email PixTrix!

Dr Ruch is on vacation for 2 weeks! What bad timing. Dr Marold is just a regular vet, he is a nice guy, but I don't think he is very knowledgable on gliders. He takes great care of our dog, but I would feel much better if Dr. Ruch had seen Trixie.

How is she doing?

Trixie is hanging in there, taking her meds like an angel. I just gave her a piece of watermelon and she ate most of it. I am keeping my fingers crossed that she will make it. I am going to stay up all night with her again, nursing her back to good health. I will be online tonight, so if you guys have AIM, my s/n is PixTrix6.

Karin,
Would you do me a big favor, please? Pretty please? Would you call Dr. Ness tomorrow morning and make an appointment for me and Trixie? I would need at least 2 1/2 hours of driving time to get there, as Eisenhower Expressway is more south than I would have liked to go but I am desperate for Trixie's good health.

Thank you so very much!

As of right now, Oldcolt58 has been helping me tremendously on tips to take better care of Trixie. He suggested I give her some BML as a licky treat but Trixie didn't take it. So I took a .5cc syringe and filled it up with the BML and put the tip of the syringe into the side of Trixie's mouth, avoiding her nose, to prevent possible asphyxiation. While feeding her, I noticed her increased strength in her struggle with me. I took that as a good sign in improvement. Ten minutes after feeding, she jumped from my hand at the keyboard to my shoulder, which she had not been able to do all day long today. Again, another good sign of improvement. I just took her by her cagemates, Pixie and Bullet, and noticed that Trixie is now less yellow and more pink! I realize I still have a long way to go but at least it is a good start to recovery.
