Back with round 2 of the "rejected" joey. I took a 2nd look at your guy's advice on my baby girl, Isis, being rejected. I thought all was well and I was just getting worried over nothing. But yesterday I got up and to my horror found her lying on the bottom of the cage. I quickly picked her up to make sure she was alright, cause my first thought when she was lying there was death, but I picked her up and she woke up. The reason I think she is rejected is because the other baby, Ixchel, is about 1/3 the size bigger, more active, eyes open all the way, and craws in the cage on her own and plays with mom and dad. Isis opens her eyes about 1/2 way, doesn't move much if at all, a little colder than her sister, she can climb on the cage, but I think she prefers not to. Both babies can and do eat BML, fruits, and veggies. Last night I found Isis trying, weakly, to get to the food bowl, so I got her out of the cage and took a lid to a baby jar, but some fruit (cut into very small slivers) and some BML (cut small) and fed it to her, she ate, but again she seemed very weak. I don't know whether to take her away from mom and raise her myself, or leave her with mom. PLEASE help...
Noah

Well, I didn't read your other thread - but if Mom isn't hurting her, then I wouldn't pull her - maybe just supplement. How old is she? What does she weigh? Have you spoken to Sheila at To and Fro Gliders? Weak & cold isn't good - maybe supplement w/ Wombaroo milk every 3 hrs & see if she perks up!

her Oop date is 9/22, not for sure exactly what weight though, no I haven't spoken to Sheila (don't know her) and where do you buy/order Wombaroo milk?

Ok - so she's almost 5 weeks OOP. You should purchase a scale so you can keep tabs on your gliders' weights (this will come in handy for monitoring ALL your gliders). You can pick one up at Walmart in the postal section for about $18. My advice would be to go down to Walmart and pick up some Esbilac puppy milk replacer & a scale. Weigh her & start supplementing her every 3 hours. Note her weights & see if she gains and starts perking up. Also, the puppy milk is just an interim thing - order Wombaroo >0.8 Possum Milk Replacer & IMPACT Colostrum:

If you call Geoff, he'll Priority ship!
Wombaroo.com/Perfect Pets Inc.
1-800-366-8794 or 734-461-1362 (phone)
734-461-2858 (fax) []GSchrock1@aol.com[/] (e-mail)

Also, keep a close eye on her - she needs to stay warm - cold babies can't feed! If you get stuck, go to www.toandfrogliders.com & read up, Sheila has some great info there!

I think I read you are feedng bml as well. I would also give her some of that. At 5 weeks old they start sampling the food from the dish but still rely on momma alot. If she is being hurt then I would remove her, but if she is just being left out try adding a few pouches so she has a warm place.

You have gotten a lot of great advice from people who know a lot about gliders. I know you are worried, but you will do a good job of taking care of this baby. Keep us posted.

[:"green"]I would definitely try supplementing rather than pulling her from Mama at this point. Mix up Baby BML rather than regular BML for the joeys - it's easier for them to digest. I have a lot of information on hand-raising joeys on my website at: www.suzsugargliders.com/handraisingajoey.htm Please check it out and print any information that will help you. I have age-specific information on my site that can assist you as well as recipes for Joey Formula and Baby BML.

Wow, First off, Great info!
I am so sad that your baby is being left out!
I too had two joeys on 19 Sep, so just a couple of days from yours.

I started with supplements 2 days OOP due to Mom and Dad both leaving the babies alone while they ate and played, (first started with the esbilac/babay bml then to wombaroo/baby bml) also just to give Mom a break. Boy am I glad that I did.

The smaller of the two since has been left alone on many occassions. I set a couple of pouches in their cage for extra, and she would be left in one or the other from time to time all by her little self, so I just fed her the supplements and placed her back with the others, which seemed to work out fine for a few days or so at a time.

From observing them all together I discovered that the smaller one just seemed to be very clingy to Mom and Dad, insecure, not at all like the larger joey, which explores and seems to be a whole lot more curious, just like yours. So possibly this is a way that Mom and Dad are trying to make the little one more independent by leaving her, to 'grow up' I don't know.
But, I really think you should try to keep the little one with the parents as long as you can as long as there is no marks about her.

Please let us know how the little one is doing!

Everyone has given you great advice!
I had similar troubles with my joeys. My first time mom threw out one of her twins atleast 3 different times, starting at day 2 OOP. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shakehead.gif" alt="" /> One time I found the parents and one baby sleeping in the wheel while they left the other baby in the nest box all alone. Other times, I found the baby on the floor of the cage alone. I had to remove everything from their cage they could possibly sleep in including their wheel, except the nest box. This way, if they wanted a comfy place to sleep, they had to go back to their babies. I feel bad about them not having a wheel but they have plenty of other things to climb on and play with. AND- it is working so far. They always sleep in the nestbox now. I just have to keep an eye on them.
Like everyone said, try to keep them with mom and dad and make sure mom has plenty of protein. sounds like you're doing a great job! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yelclap.gif" alt="" />

Unfortunetly, the great advice I got, and it was great advice, it was too late. Last nite after I got home I found Isis lying on the bottom of the cage, like the nite before, but then time she didn't make it...Thanks for the advice and concern, but although this tragedy left with bad news, it did bring me more experiance and I will now learn from my mistakes.
Thanks for everything,
Noah
