I've never come across any information on the rejection potential depending on the age of the joey.
I guess I'm asking because I knew there was a possibility that Yuki would reject/cannobalize the joey for many reasons, but I thought that we were past that into the "safe zone." Hopefully that's not a huge mistake on my part
What is the farthest along a joey can/has been cannobalized?
Also what are the chances of her just flat out rejecting the joey & I guess mutilating it instead of outright cannabolizing it? It's gross I know but I'm just trying to figure out what happened

Usually after 2 weeks oop you are in the safe zone. It can still happen after 2 weeks oop but isn't very often. Here are reasons why mommas reject 1. stress 2. not enough milk supply 3. momma to young 4. first time mom.. she doesn't know what to do 5. something is wrong with the joey that we can not tell, but mom knows 6. bad diet7. momma has health problems her self that is all I can think of right now. Don't feel like it was your fault unless you had her on a horrible diet (which I know you didn't).

Was your joey cannabalized? How old was it?

Oh no, I am sad you had to go through that! It's also very good that you are trying to figure why this happened, you're very brave! My sympathies, lots of hugs your way!!

Sil is right- the joey was close to coming out of the pouch- which is the best guestimate I have since she came to me pregnant.
*Graphic Details ahead!*
I don't know about this joey. In the morning I picked up what looked to me like the spine & tail... for the few seconds I could stand to look at it- I could see where the baby's body was attached to the spine. There was just some chunks where the meat had tore away from the bone.
Then last night when I got home I had this feeling that there was more joey somewhere but I was scared to look! I waited for Chad to get home & told him that I thought there was more joey behind the wheel- so he took care of it. I didn't look at it- I couldn't- and he could barely look at it. But between the two of us & what we found I think that the joeys body was just ripped from the spine & tail. He said it didn't look like it had been chewed on or anything- it was just separated.
So I don't know if the mom did this or if Lilo (the baby of the group) did it or what.
Is that common to just find a mutilated joey?

[:"green"]I'm not sure about the answer to this question, Sarah, but it seems to me that it is a possibility that they got "caught" and ditched the parts & went into their pouch. I really don't know for sure, though. It seems odd that they would mutilate the joey & not actually cannibalize it. Hopefully someone else will have a better, more knowledgeable answer for you.

I've had a couple joeys cannibalized and everytime, there was nothing left. The range on rejection/cannibalization that I've experienced personally is 2 days IP - 5 days OOP.

Usually they do a thorough job of disposing of the carcass.
They dump the parts usually as far as they can get them from the nest. It's an instinctual behavior to get rid of the carcass because the carcass will draw predators. Even though there are no predators in your house, they still feel inclined to do this.

I'm wondering what really happened then
The two pieces we each saw were pretty intact aside from what looked like tearing.
I wonder if something else happened or maybe Lilo was involved some how. Oh well... I guess I may never know
The worst part is that I got my #5 french cathetar & everything I needed on Monday- then this happened the next day! At least I'll have it if Ogre & Mona decide to start getting busy!
