I picked up my two girls yesterday and although they crabbed a lot in their pouch on the ride home, I wasn't frightened of them. We got home and I put them in their sleeping cube with their pouch and they went straight to sleep. This morning at about 1:45, they woke me up and I was so excited because they were out of their pouch playing! They would even come up to the wires and sniff my hand heart
Today, I decided to take them out of their cage (still in their pouch) and bring them into a room to sit with me. Zohee came out first but went off to do her own thing while I tried to coax Zahlie out. I finally did the "toothpaste" thing to get her out and put some honey on my finger for her to lick. She lunged and nipped me frown
It didn't hurt, but I was scared and backed off (which I know I'm not supposed to do) and didn't try to mess with her anymore. I put them both back in the pouch and into the cage.
Did I do something wrong? I don't know if I can handle the bites. Even though they haven't hurt (yet), they scare me when they lunge at me.. but I guess that's the point.
What do I do?
And also.. I've been putting t-shirts in with them but should I take their pouch out? It's the pouch our breeder gave us to take them home in and it smells like her house. Should I remove it?

The main thing to do is be PATIENT. They are new to your home. Give them a few days. Talk in a low voice. Move slow. I notice our little guys don't like fast movements and they get really aggressive if I move to quick. As soon as I slow down, they will give kisses and want to be with you.

Don't be scared. Just think of how it must look to them to have a big hand coming their way. You will do fine. This is the time that they will test you and establish who is in charge. In our house, the gliders are but they don't have to know it. If you pull away every time they nip and stay away, they will learn that is what it takes to keep you away. It is okay to pull your hand back, but then go right back and try to interact with them. Even if you just put your hand in the cage and not touch them. They will learn that they can't keep you away.

Take your time, be patient and remember that negative reinforcement does not work with gliders. Good luck!

I don't care what anyone says, taking the bite is really, really hard. It's natural human instinct to pull away from something that hurts.
What I always did is I kept bugging mine until they would stop. I'd pull my finger back, then I'd put it right back in their face. Every time they lunged at it I'd do the same thing. It worked pretty well. Or if you let them bite you and you have honey on your finger, they'll soon realize that your fingers are amazing. wink

Yep I totally agree. It sucks to get bit. But, it sucks a lot less when they are little than when they are big. Unfortunatly you may have to take some nips now to avoid the hard bites in the future.

They want the lick treat, but are scared of the finger. So they lunge and try to get the treat too quickly. Put a tiny bit of honey on a plastic spoon or bamboo chopstick. Let the girls lick that, and little by little, move it closer to the end of your finger, then eventually to your finger once they quit lunging. This may take several days. It works for me. Mine still do this sometimes when they get too excited about getting a fresh meal worm!

You need to let them settle in for a few days and calm down before trying to take them out. Sit by the cage and talk to them give treats, but don't push just yet. They are still scared and stressed

Well I think you were just moving a little too fast for them.

I don't know if I can handle the bites. Even though they haven't hurt (yet), they scare me when they lunge at me.. but I guess that's the point.
Yes they are trying to scare you and once they start to trust you and get more comfy they will usually stop lunging and biting. I have been bitten and nipped numerous times and I always tell mine sternly NO. and gently move their little head away from that piece of my body.

I've been putting t-shirts in with them but should I take their pouch out? It's the pouch our breeder gave us to take them home in and it smells like her house. Should I remove it?
No I would leave their pouch, right now that's the only normal thing left to them. Tshirts in the cage can be a danger because they can get caught/tangled in it , a better way would be scent blankies. Cut some 6x6 fleece blankies and wear inside your shirt all day/night, then put them inside their sleeping pouch. You can drape the shirt over the outside of the cage.

As other said - you are just moving too fast. Give them a few days to settle in to their new home. Sit by their cage and give them treats by hand (mealies work great). Carry then in their pouch and just talk to them, don't try to handle them just yet. They will calm down when they start to trust you. Also, I think taking the bite is ridiculous - It HURTS!

I've gotten a little further.. but just a little.
They're inside their pouch sleeping in my lap right now heart
AND, they're letting me pet them while they sleep!
It's so fun to play with their little paws!!
I'm so happy, I feel like we're getting a littler bit closer cloud9
And I get it. I won't rush them anymore, I'll take it slow!
Thanks so much for all your help, everyone!
